Poor you Meggle. If you need a shoulder, I used to be a support / Info contact at the charity (HG awareness) i linkd to before, feel free to CAT me. Been there myself, lost loads esp. with ds1, ended up on a drip.

medication saw me through too, but it did take a few tried to get the right one for me.

Fklat coke is supposed to be good, ginger is in reality only strong enough (unbless for placebo effect) in much larger amounts than you'll find in biccys- crystallized ginger is good, though.
Then it's the usual staples of lucozade etc/ if you cn try ice, try frozen lollipops- at last they have calories.

TRhere is also a theoretical link between tiredness and nausea that you should be aware of, sor est is essential.

Do remeber that the baby will get what it needs 9apart frm fluid) regardless, so what you must focus on is eating something- anything- you fancy, rather than worrying about nutrition. Butrition doesn't really come into it at this stage.

I am a midwife and recently read my journal !
Wish i had kept it now but there was a piece of research on best advice for this.
It was recommending a good pregnancy multi vitamin supp. reduced the severity of prolonged nausea and sickness.
Have never rec. supps. myself in ordinary cases, apart from obviously folic acid, but may follow this up.If its a vitamin esp. for pregnancy could be worth a try.
I had hyperemesis for 12 weeks first time, 20 weeks second and all the way through last time.
Totally horrid and ate ready bought ice cubes and drank cold diet coke for 9 months.

i was so ill for 22 weeks with both daughters so i feel for you massively. it will go with time and the new baby will make it all worthwhile.

i found eating lots of pasta got me through... "eat through it"!
ginger gum also helped (i couldn't face eating ginger biscuits or making ginger tea). sounds crazy but those hypnotherapy CDs are also meant to really work. i didn't hear about them until too late, but my sister had terrible nausea with her first two, used it with her third and couldn't believe it.
i think you can get them at mamatoto. www.mamatoto.co.uk

oh, and don't forget haribos. they are brilliant! (must be the sugar when you are feeling so low) i still love them, but now no excuse!!

twickersmum · 27/09/2006 15:27

oh and i forgot to say that if anyone tells you morning sickness is "all in the mind" puking on them generally works. a guy i worked with never said it again... ha ha ha ha ha

the only thing that really worked for me (and of course i discovered it a week before the morning sickness went away) was eating lemon slices. bit cringy but it worked so well! when i couldn't stomach them plain i'd squeeze them into some water but it worked best to just eat it!

I soooo sympathise with all of you that are suffering. My DH & relatives were all sympathetic....for about 4 weeks unitl they clearly thought I was exaggerating or putting it on. Drove me mad, I wanted them to feel how dreadful it felt. Anyway! Was physically sick and had nausea for about 26 weeks ALL DAY EVERY DAY with both my pregnancies (boy & a girl so made no diff!). I never found a miracle cure I have to say but all the time I ate I felt better, it was only about half an hour later the nausea would return and I'd end up seeing my dinner again! Such a dreadful feeling and it just seems to go on and on forever. Hang in there because the baby will be sooo worth it but big hugs to all you girls that are suffering,xx

wearing sea sickness wrist bands with the bumps in them a bit like Tens machines I just really pushed into the pressure points when I felt particularly sick which was most of the time with both pregnancies, don't know whether it worked but it gave me something to do and take my mind of things! With dd 2 i did have acupuncture, it was absolutely horrible, hurt like hell and was very uncomfortable but I do think it helped abit, I only managed 2 sessions but if you can bear it it may be worth a go.

Poor you, its an absolutely awful thing to go through especially as unless someone has gone through it no one can quite understand what its like to feel sick 24 hours a day ugh......

Big sympathies. I'd echo other posters by saying that, for me, months two to four of round-the-clock queasiness were by far the worst thing about pregnancy.

Up until I became pregnant, I hadn't been sick since I was nine - and had become a bit phobic about the thought of it . During pregnancy, I felt nauseous for three months, but was sick only once, when I got up one morning and had a warm shower without eating enough beforehand.

Top tips:

  • Wear sea bands
  • Listen to Morning Well TAPE (not CD - apparently not as effective, someone told me)
  • Eat oat cakes/rice cakes/banana in bed before getting up (dp brought me porridge in bed in morning )
  • Eat bowl of porridge before bed to stabilise blood sugar levels before sleep
  • Have oat/rice cakes to hand for middle-of-the-night nibbling (expect crumby bed )
  • Take filling snacks everywhere and graze all day (and night if need be - I did), to keep hunger at bay - raisins, chewy bars, etc
  • Have a lump of root ginger by bed to sniff
  • Stay cool - anywhere warm or stuffy makes it worse
  • When you feel hot and queasy, run your wrists under a cold tap for a bit; cools you down
  • Stick with bland food until it wears off: for me, porridge, fruit and pasta for about three months
