I was sick at least once a day every day until 5.5 months. I found the following helped me:
Wearing Seabands
Not talking about food to anyone or going anywhere with food smells, ask hubbie to do all cooking
Digestive or shortbread biscuits eaten the moment I woke up
White toast (really white 'student bread'!)
Some really strong tasting cinnamon sweets I bought at Wakehurst Place (Kew/NT in Sussex)
Kendall Mint Cake
Any other strong minty/herby/spicy tasting sweets, eg: cough candy, eaten all day long: NB: I found Preggy Pops no better and more expensive.
Very odd, probably due to craving: Dairylea triangles and/or wafer thin honeyroast ham. Basically: if you feel like eating something: eat it: lots! The more food you can pack in the better you will feel.
Huge Sypmathy to all of you suffering: I am expecting No2 and don't plan on any more, mainly due to sickness being more awful (in my opinion) than late pregnancy hugeness and labour itself!!!

I agree that I found the early stages of pregnancy far worse than the last. I could hardly work a full week in the first trimester due to tiredness and nausia. I lived on lemonade, pringles and polo mints. I tried to nibble on something all day and certainly the less I ate the worse I felt. Sometimes I managed a bit of potato. To make it worse you can't tell anyone why.

My heart goes out to you but definately try and rest, eat and drink whatever (and whenever) you fancy.

AmieR · 26/09/2006 12:25

hello my first time posting here after finding out this very helpful site!

I'm 18 weeks gone with my first child. I've found that eating something, such as a plain biscuit as soon as you can has helped me a great deal to suffice the urge to vomit in the morning. Also, Rocks Orgnanic Ginger cordial is a god send!

Though I have found the queaseyness to be increasing as I get further into my pregnancy! Has anyone else suffered this as most of the literature I've been reading has said it should decline!

Just getting the joys of heart burn too... anyone have any hints for foods to stay clear of?

Thanks!

endlesslove · 26/09/2006 12:44

Just a quick question, its been asked what point m/s stops but what about starting? Was it days, weeks or months from ovulation?

AmieR · 26/09/2006 12:54

endlesslove, for me personally I was about 5 weeks into my pregnancy. I guess as with all things concerned with pregnancy, it differs!

Booboobedoo · 26/09/2006 13:11

Six weeks in for me. I look back at the first two weeks after the test with a sort of pink-tinted longing...

Booboobedoo · 26/09/2006 13:13

On the upside though (and apologies if my upbeatness is making other MS-sufferers grit their teeth), I never worried about the baby. I just figured that if I felt this awful, it must all be going right inside.

Good ol' pregnancy logic.

MKG · 26/09/2006 13:34

This may not be what you want to hear, but have you tried exercise? My favorite for pregnancy is belly dancing. I have all day nausea and it really helps me focus and forget that I feel terrible. Somehow using my stomach muscles makes it feel better.

Astrophe · 26/09/2006 14:43

I started getting sick at about 6 weeks with both of mine, and it stayed until about 24 weeks with the first and 20 weeks with the second. I've read its supposed to 'peak' at 9 weeks, and I did find that 9/10 weeks was the worst time for me. I was much worse with my first, a girl, which is, according to folk wisdom, beacuse of the extra female hormones

i found lemon oil in a burner, bath or little bottle helped a little, and carried a thermos of ice cold water everywhere to sip. ate lots of dry crackers and toast too.i was more active with no.2 and i think it helped. i took medication with no.1 and it stopped me vomiting but did not actually make me feel any beter, so i stopped it.

its just awful though isn't it, and i don't think anyonw who hasn't endured bad NS can really understand how hard it is. sympathy to you! hope something helps!

madmarchhare · 26/09/2006 14:49

It was definately drugs that did it for me in the end, first metoclopramide, then stemetil and in the end ondansatron. After dehydrating and ending up in hospital several times I gave up with special teas, wrist bands and ginger products. Even with the drugs I still didnt feel OK til 8 months.

If it is affecting your everyday life see you doctor, at the very least just drink as much as you can to ensure you dont dehydrate.

I hope you feel better soon, it realy is a pig and I symathise with you emmensley.

anniediv · 26/09/2006 14:58

madmarchhare, I am on ondansetron at the moment it has been a godsend. Doesn't get rid of all the symptoms, but I can at least function semi normally.

donnie · 26/09/2006 15:02

meggle I have some of the wristbands - you can have them if you want. You'd have to give me your address though.( obviously!)

I found they did work to an extent and I was sick as a dog for the first 16 weeks.

Kif · 26/09/2006 15:09

Priority is to stay hydrated. Doesn't actualy matter very much if you can't eat very much/lose weight. Use the rehydration sachets to make sure you're getting salts as well as water.

Squall for help at the hospital when it gets very bad. IV drips are glorious, and they will keep putting you on it as many days/times as you need to get you through.

It can become a vicious cycle with dehydration/exhaustion making you more sick - so important to be careful of yourself.

Remember that it is temporary. Also apparently a good sign for lots of preganancy hormones in your blood (= well established pregnancy).

Kif · 26/09/2006 15:10

I found that heat made me worse - and dressing very lightly/sleeping without covers helped.

Wisp · 26/09/2006 15:49

Poor You- It's awful, and so draining.
I went to the Gps,and I had been sick so much, and couldn't hold water down,I had lost a stone in a fortnight.
She gave me an injection to stop the sickness-which was fantastic, and I went in daily until it started to get better at 20 weeks.
I was sick everywhere, all the time.

Homeopathy also worked wonders, but I only discovered it with my last pregnancy !

Rumpel · 26/09/2006 16:23

Poor you - I know how you feel. I was sick from 6 weeks until 24 weeks. I couldn't even get out of bed - it is just sooo debilitating. I tried, sea bands, eating, not eating, homeopathy, hypnotherapy, sour boiled sweets - eventually I got acupuncture 4 weeks in a row and it seemed to do the job. I thought it was never going to end and have never been off my work as much in all my life!! I remember going back to work and a colleague telling me that morning sickness was 'all in the mind' I really wanted to punch her lights out! People only understand how bad it is if they have been through it themselves.

I found keeping cool helped and I managed to stay hydrated by drinking water. Later on I found that diet coke helped - weirdly!

I don't like taking medication but next time (I'll have to pysche myself up to it) I would defo take it as I couldn't suffer that again.

Hope it gets better soon.xx

julezboo · 26/09/2006 16:27

Honey Ive been there! How far are you?

I remember thinking at 14 weeks that it was never going to end, i tried everything and resorted to carrying round a bucket with me to chuck up into it was bloody awful!

However Im now 19+ weeks and im sick once a week maybe, but usually only if i get too hungry!

try the bands though they might work for you (((Hugs))

looshkin · 26/09/2006 17:35

Hello there, maximum sympathy. I am now 26 weeks and finally starting to enjoy being pregnant. My vomiting settled around 18 weeks. I am a GP myself and I took stemetil on the advice of an obstetrician friend and it really did work and other medicaitons can be used as well. Docs will always be cautions in recommending any medicaiotn in pregnacy. New guidelines for hyperemesis in our region advise to avoid drugs until 9 weeks if at all possible but as many people have posted it is important to stay hydrated. I found that peppermint ginger etc did not work but the seabands did help I wore them continuously for 4 months - still got dimples in my wrists!

Everyone is different the only one consistent thing is it does settle at some point keep going you will get there I also recomend time off work if posssible I had 5 weeks off as could not get out of bed. Loosh.

Bucketsofdinosaurs · 26/09/2006 17:36

I was sick from bang on 6wks pg with both of mine. When I found out I was pg with no2 we had curry and yummy stuff as much as possible until the day it started again .
Threw up 3 times a day until 16wks with No1 and once a day first thing until 12wks with No2. Felt sick all day with both.

PeachyClairHasBadHair · 26/09/2006 18:31

try this link

here

for a decent lot of ideas

but please ppromise me you won't not eat agin... worst thing you can do, upsets your mineral balances and causes nausea in itself. rest, eat and drink whatever you can (drinking most important) and hopefully you'll feel better; if you don't get thee to a GP

PeachyClairHasBadHair · 26/09/2006 18:32

(and to remain hydrated, try melon and lettuce- hgh water content)

TheBlonde · 26/09/2006 18:35

Try...
a small drop of honey straight on your tongue
nux vom - a homeopathic tablet - you can get in it Boots

CornflakeKid · 26/09/2006 18:36

Come to the due in april thread - we all have ms! All feeling very sorry for ourselves - but are very supportive and nice!

mummydoc · 27/09/2006 10:32

I used seabands and pressed so hard on the button i gave myself pressure sores !!i tired everything already suggested and still puked non stop for 26 weeks - during second pregnancy my consultant told me to drink tea with 6 sugars in it ( tea woul dnormally make me sick cannot stand it) but i forced it down and it did work - maybe proves the theory morning sickness is down to falling blood sugar levels.

twoisenoughmum · 27/09/2006 11:46

I didn't have 'morning' sickness. I had nauseau that started early afternoon and went on all day, peaking at about dinner time, and it lasted from week 8 until the very last day of each of my pregnancies. I had a girl first and, during my second pregnancy when I had exactly the same symptoms, exactly the same cravings and food intolerances, I was convinced that I was expecting another girl. So I was very surprised (and pleased) to see a little boy being held up in the delivery room. I never vomited but I'm convinced that's only because I have a vomiting phobia and am an expert at not being sick when perhaps I really should be.

Sea-bands are the only things that made any difference at all for me. I felt horrendously guilty over my diet (which for months seemed to be cheese sandwiches, crackers, full sugar coke and the occasional beer). I found the idea of eating fruit, vegetables, juice, meat, fish just as repuslive as tea, coffee and wine. I didn't gain that much weight in either pregnancy but first baby born at 9lb 2oz, second at 8lb 15oz. I remember so clearly the first meal I had after coming out of hospital - it was gorgeous!!!

Good luck to you. Please try the acupressure bands - you can get them in any chemist.
