Where does baby sleep in day?

Do you just use the cot for nap times, or have you brought something else? My mom suggested a Moses basket, are there any other recommended options? Not opposed to Moses basket at all, I just don't know what the "done" thing is?!

TIA X

Both of mine have only slept in wrap slings when tiny. Neither was happy to be put down. Other people I know have had travel systems with a carrycot/bassinet/sleeping 'bag' type thing that they've used in the day.

Even at night, a tiny baby may struggle to sleep in a big cot. They are used to being in a much smaller, cosier environment.

He is 3 weeks old. Naps in our arms, in his brothers' arms, on my lap, bouncy chair, on our bed, in his cot, in the bedside cot, in his carseat if we are on the school run, in his pushchair.

Can you tell he is DS 3 and just has to fit in :)

LairyPoppins · 07/09/2014 16:12

Oh yes, I forgot the sling!

TooSpotty · 07/09/2014 16:15

And I forgot our bouncy chair! Which worked from about 6 weeks.

Mostly travel cot and pram, once past 4months he was always outside in his pram for atheist One nap a day and in his cot for most others.

arghhelpme · 07/09/2014 16:20

Both dc used to sleep in moses basket or carrycot of pushchair in the day. This time I'm planning on putting them in the cot or in the playpen which I will try to pad out and make cosy. Having twins this time and live above ground floor, pushchair will have to stay in the car and have no room for two moses baskets.

Moses basket here.

WowserBowser · 07/09/2014 16:24

Moses basket or on me. Or bouncey chair when he was older.

Then me again until about 18 months. I enjoyed napping with him!

squizita · 07/09/2014 16:25

Is a basic bouncy chair ok or is it worth buying a fancy vibrate one?

ThursdayLast · 07/09/2014 16:27

A basic bouncy chair was all we ever needed. DS grew out of it surprisingly quickly!

ACM88 · 07/09/2014 16:31

Is a bouncy chair ok to nap in for long periods of time? I'm a childminder and from a young age baby will have to get used to noise and other children, but I want them to be safe and cosy. I like the idea of something that can move from room to room, I.e sling, Moses basket...so confusing!

On me, or in carrycot of pram. In cot when older.

Mine would never nap in a bouncy chair, including vibrating one, or indeed most other places Hmm

Iggi999 · 07/09/2014 16:48

Bouncy chairs surely not advised for sleeping as the baby isn't flat. I know they'll do it sometimes whether you like it or not, but it certainly wouldn't be an ideal first choice. I didn't have a Moses basket, I used the carrycot part of the pram for sleep until I went to bed when it was a bedside cot.

ThursdayLast · 07/09/2014 16:53

No, not recommended for proper sleeps. I our case it was
'Shit, he's nodded off in the bouncy chair'
'Well, I'm not moving him'
Grin

Artandco · 07/09/2014 16:54

As your a childminder I would recommend using pram so baby is higher up off ground against other children, and so you can easily go out when needed.

Otherwise look at the mothercare Hyde crib. High off ground, cheap and takes up little space so an slot in next to sofa for example

Sleeping in cot in day alone isn't recommended before 6 months due to SIDS but fine after so you only need something baby can fit in the first few months

squizita · 07/09/2014 16:57

I thought they weren't meant to be flat all the time du to flat head? Hence why a lot of people have them sleep in a sling?
I have a moses basket, but was advised against having baby in there all day - ditto carrycot?

Artandco · 07/09/2014 17:03

It's flat if not being held/ sling. Ie sling is good, laying down in Moses /cot good, semi flat in bouncer/ car seat not good.

squizita · 07/09/2014 17:08

Ah cool thanks.

TooSpotty · 07/09/2014 17:24

The Baby Bjorn bouncer goes pretty much flat. We had that one. We did have a different one with our first but she wouldn't sleep in it.

minipie · 07/09/2014 17:35

Bouncy chairs apparently have same effect as lying flat as far as flat head is concerned.

Iggi999 · 07/09/2014 17:51

Why would anyone leave them lying flat all day? Confused This is just about how they sleep ie not very much bitter laughter

mssleepyhead · 07/09/2014 17:54

10 days old and sleeping...
On me/DH
Chicco Hoopla chair for short periods (when we're eating)

That's it. I know I have to put him down eventually but it's hard!

ShadowStar · 07/09/2014 18:07

In carrycot / pram or in the playpen. We have a padded mat in the playpen.

ACM88 · 07/09/2014 18:12

Thank you all- given me some things to consider!! I'm thinking Moses basket on a stand is a good idea for our situation. We do plan to get a sling too, don't know how practical play pen would be with other, older, children around, it would take up more room...bouncers also good idea, and if baby did fall asleep in them occassionally I can't see it causing them harm!

Squizita - flat head is best avoided by spending time on tummy, when awake and being held upright by someone and i think slings are ok too because of the flexibility of them. With regards to bouncy chairs they arent recommended for sleeping or long periods but they are worth their weight in gold - i found the cheapest ones better as they bounce easier so just dc wriggling about is enough to bounce them a bit, whereas more expensive ones dont tend to.

ACM i had ds in a moses basket initially then once too big, i had him in a travel cot. This question has got me thinking now, how im going to work it this time. With all ds toys i dont have space for a travel cot downstairs this time. Hmm will have to go and think about that one.
