Anyone up?? My waters just broke and, as I'm T1 diabetic I called the hospital and I need to go in at about 8.30. I'm not quite 38 weeks. Do broken waters mean I'm dilated??

Hmm, well, baby's heartbeat and movements have been monitored for an hour and apparently it was perfect. Midwife wants to wait for a consultant to decide what to do next but as it's a Saturday, that may take some time. Am in the canteen atm and feeling fine, just 'periody'. Am assuming I may be induced if I haven't started dilating yet??

I think they start inducing after 24hours. They may keepyou in to monitor your diabetes in the mean time?

VJONES1985 · 02/08/2014 11:45

Yeah, I expect they will!

You can turn down the induction if you want. I was monitored after 24 hours (well more like 30hrs) and spoke to a very pragmatic consultant who seemed to prefer to avoid induction where possible. I stayed home and my planned home water birth in the end.

I don't know how the diabetes will affect their protocol though but I'd be tempted to wait a bit longer. Get some clary sage on the go and chill out as much as poss. My contractions all but disappeared but I'm glad I waited for things to happen naturally in the end (induction scared me but you may be more relaxed/brave than me!)

Keep us posted!

here's my thread

My waters went as my first sign of labour, the period pain feeling gradually intensified into proper labour over the next 19 hours. They'll talk with you but once the waters have gone they like the baby to be on it's way out within 48 hours as it can be an infection risk (not a problem if monitored) so induction may be a part of your plan tomorrow.

I had to stay in as DD1 would be prem (36+2) as you probably will with diabetes, your body id going to have extra energy demands while you may not be up to eating a bit later on. Magazines, books, knitting, get out for a stroll around the hospital if you are alllowed. If you can nap take the opportunity. All opportunities to sleep for the next few weeks MUST be taken, it's the law!

VJONES1985 · 02/08/2014 11:55

Being diabetic, I would have to be induced on Tuesday whether I like it or not. Well, obviously I could turn it down if I wanted but I realise the risks involved in that. So if they wanna induce me today/tomorrow, it would be going ahead a couple of days earlier than planned. That doesn't worry me really but the baby coming more than two weeks early does.

Have just been to the toilet and it looks exactly like I'm having a period :-/ Seems a bit extreme to me, hope that's normal.

Keep your pad to show the midwives?

ilovemonstersInc · 02/08/2014 12:38

Show mw

VJONES1985 · 02/08/2014 13:50

Midwife is stumped because she examined me and said there is no evidence that my waters have broken, but looking at my sanitary towel she would have said they had broken.

How odd? Did she say anything about the blood?

ilovemonstersInc · 02/08/2014 14:22

Did yiu have an examination when you went in? Sometimes that can irritate things inside and cause this to happen (speaking from experience from this pregnancy)

allisgood1 · 02/08/2014 14:27

Your hind waters must have gone then. Bleeding needs to be investigated further, pleased you are already in hospital! Good luck!!!

MATB1 · 02/08/2014 16:20

They can do a swab that shows whether it's actually your waters or just heave discharge / your mucus plug..

VJONES1985 · 02/08/2014 16:51

They did a scan and all is well. Have sent me home but want to induce me tomorrow morning. Need to go back in if the bleeding starts again, I have contractions, etc.

Hopefully it will all kick off for you before then!

weebairn · 02/08/2014 17:04

Good luck!!

My waters went as my first sign of labour but I was at term, 40+4.

Contractions started right away in my case and I had the baby (at home) 30 hours later.

The hospital said they would prefer to induce me after 24-48 hours if I wasn't in active labour by that point.

Hope you can get some rest tonight ready to wish your baby happy birthday very soon :)

VJONES1985 · 02/08/2014 17:09

Thank you. Am v scared about tomorrow and the sight of red blood today was upsetting obviously, but hopefully it was just the plug coming out.

weebairn · 02/08/2014 17:11

Have something to eat, and rest. Don't be scared. xx

GingerRodgers · 02/08/2014 17:13

I know after that first bit of plug there was loads of blood and gore but the midwife always whipped away the bed pads so I didn't see much of it. Fingers crossed it's just that.
Glad you and baby are ok and you can go home for a bit.
Good luck for tomorrow. Let us know how you get on, if you're up to it!

Christelle2207 · 02/08/2014 17:16

Hello. My waters didn't break till late on but during my contractions I had periody blood too which freaked me out. I had to go to the hospital much sooner than I would have otherwise done. If they've checked you out and sent you home presumably they aren't that worried. Try and get some rest if you can tomorrow will be a long day x

FastWindow · 02/08/2014 17:24

Don't worry about being 38 weeks, anywhere between 38-42 is considered 'term'. Good luck! I had the same as you but at 36+3, induced after 48 hours and labour was about 12 hours from first gentle contraction to my perfectly healthy 6lb ds. As other pp have said do go with your instinct on the bleeding. You know if you feel right or not.
Soon you will meet your lo , how lovely!!

VJONES1985 · 02/08/2014 20:37

So, I had a two hour nap when we got home and regularly had contractions, which got pretty painful. Oddly, they stopped when I got up! Anyone else had this??

Mumof3xox · 02/08/2014 21:01

You may be in slow labour
