Oh scampi, how scary for you.

TBH, with such a high risk of ectopic pregnancy I'd be taking notice of anything and everything more than just a little twinge now and then. I've never sufferd an ectopic pg so I'm not best qualified to tell you where the pain will be and how severe it will be if the pg is ectopic, but there are lots of MNers who've had ectopic pgs who'll be able to help you.

Kelly1978 · 12/09/2006 22:32

omg what a shock for you. I don't have any experience, but a friend had an ectopic and it does cause severe pains. You are bound to be feelign some normal cramps with allt he stress. Can't they scan to rule it out?

hulababy · 12/09/2006 22:32

Is there anyway you can have an early scan just to check it out?

NomDePlume · 12/09/2006 22:34

If you are concerned about the pains I'd give NHS Direct a call, they should be able to talk you through your pains and tell you where you be mnost likely to feel the pain caused by an ectopic pg. Their number 0845 46 47

scampi71 · 12/09/2006 22:35

doctor sending me for another preg test as he says home preg tests are not officail so i have to wait a week to find out and he told me just to relax untill then but its knowing that it can happen that worries me

FWIW, it is very rare indeed to get a false positive result on a pg test. False negatives are pretty common, but false positives are like hen's teeth

NotQuiteCockney · 12/09/2006 22:37

Um, when was your last period? Early July? Late July? I'd think an ectopic pregnancy would cause severe pains by now, particularly if it was early July.

(I've not had an ectopic, though, so maybe I'm wrong ...)

scampi71 · 12/09/2006 22:38

i know some cramping will be normal its not bad pain more like a pulling pain keep losing water thou and going toilet a lot

Hmm, this page looks pretty informative, but doesn't say when problems with ectopic pregnancy occur. (At how many weeks.)

lemonaid · 12/09/2006 22:48

My GP said that if you've had two +ve HPTs then that's so reliable these days they'll assume they are correct. But then I hadn't had my tubes tied, I suppose.

How do you feel about this if it's not ectopic? It doesn't sound as though you have any of the main symptoms, so while there's a high risk it sounds relatively unlikely in your case.

I did have a friend who had a perfectly healthy DD after having her tubes tied (and there didn't seem to be anything wrong with the way the tying had been done when they had a poke around to check during her c/s). In her case she'd only had them tied because she'd been advised not to have children for medical reasons, though, so she was over the moon. This must be such a shock for you, and then the uncertainty on top of it... ((hugs)).

scampi71 · 12/09/2006 22:48

thanks for the info much apreciated going to read though im not haveing the kind of pain its says so think im ok

You could just go to the hospital, tell them that you are having pains and that your doctor had said 60% risk of ectopic, etc., and I bet they would scan you then and there.

Expecting you to tell the difference between cramps and ectopic pain when ectopic pain means "get to hospital right NOW this minute" is pretty irresponsible IMO. I would have thought at the least he'd have referred you to an early pregnancy clinic for a scan.

Hugs again, and congratulations!

Kelly1978 · 12/09/2006 23:12

I agree with lemonaid. At least it would put your mind at rest if you got an early scan. With the dates thoguh, it really doesnt sound ectopic neither. My friend was in agony VERY early on.

PinkTulips · 12/09/2006 23:15

someone i know had an ectopic preg and she was in hospital in agony at 4 weeks so sounds like you're past the point of danger if last period was july 10.... that would make you 8/9 weeks. not sure though so best head to the hosp and have yourself scanned to be sure

kickassangel · 12/09/2006 23:25

i had to have a scan at 6 weeks when suspected ectopic. apparantly the pain is severe - you would KNOW there's something wrong, so it sounds like you're ok.
remember we're not doctors - if in doubt, make a call.

Penel0pe · 12/09/2006 23:47

Hi Scampi

I'm sorry, I don't want to worry you, but I had an ectopic (about 15 yrs ago) and had emergency treatment at about 7 weeks. I was in severe pain, couldn't speak. I remember having drip drip bleeding for a week or so and being told to put feet up! Doh!

If you're worried, get yourself down to casualty and checked out. Can't see why your GP didn't send you for early scan.

If you haven't had any bleeding and breasts tender, etc, you do sound ok to me, but as kickassangel says, we're not docs.

Hope all goes well.

aitch71 · 13/09/2006 03:33

i'm afraid that the range of time before an ectopic pregnancy can assert itself varies wildly, i've heard of pregnancies getting to 14 and 15 weeks, not to mention the fact that you can get abdominal ectopics as well as ones on or in your fallopian tubes and they can take months to find out. I've had two ectopics, and wasn't in hellish pain either time.
i think it's pretty irresponsible of your doc to land this semi-diagnosis on you and refuse to do anything about it. you are well within your rights to go and ask for a scan at your local hospital, i reckon. many have early pregnancy units that do not require a referral from your GP. Obviously i hope that your baby is exactly where he or seh should be, though... but it's best to put your mind at rest.

Unfortunately, they're not in a rush to scan unless the pain is bad. I was told I had high chance of ectopic and would find it difficult to get pregnant before my first because of scarring from an infection (turns out I am extremely fertile!). About six weeks I had low one sided pain, quite bad, and they took me in, couldn't see the baby and operated, removing 'something' from my tube but the baby, now ds, survived the op and was fine, he was just too small to see. No problems with dd, but in this pregnancy, around six/seven weeks, I had low one sided cramping, obviously was worried about ectopic again and the doctor phoned the hospital and they said, next appointment for a scan was in a week, come in then unless the pain got bad or I felt dizzy or started bleeding etc. It was fine again this time (23 weeks now) but I was pretty shocked, I had been expecting to be scanned straightaway like the last time but they seemed pretty relaxed about it. I think the pain might have been the scar tissue, which it could be to do with your ties as well, but don't hesitate to ring them back if you think it's worsening. I couldn't actually stand up straight the first time, although it wasn't ectopic, they never said what they removed, and I know a friend who had one and had to be lifted off the loo. Be vigilant, and keep in contact with them, but I'm not sure it would be that early anyway, commonest time 8/9weeks I think, they probably couldn't see it on a scan at 4 weeks anyway. Incidently, my mother got pregnant with my youngest brother about three years after having the ties. He was a c section and they said they didn't know how it had happened as the ties were still in place, and that she had more chance of winning the lottery! I think now the odds of it happening are higher, or they thought it was more foolproof then.
I really hope you feel better and everything works out for you. I think you'll know if it moves from cramping to real pain, but, remember you're entitled to keep ringing them if you're worried. Good luck!

colette · 13/09/2006 13:24

Scampi71
I had suspected ectopic with dd and they did 2 blood tests to check hormone levels ie: if they are rising and normal for the gestation period then things are o.k . The tests showed things were ok and I had a scan a few weeks later.Or that is how it was for me.
A scan would be better but the blood tests were done at about 8-9 wks , about the same time as you are . Ask about this , it is too stressful to be told to wait . Sorry not on msn but keep us updated. Good Luck and look after yourself

merrily · 13/09/2006 13:35

I don't mean to cause panic but if you're worried at all, please please please go to your nearest Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit and get yourself scanned. I can't believe your doctor hasn't referred you already!

I had an ectopic pregnancy which had got to about 9-10 weeks - I was not in severe pain, just a nagging feeling in my right groin and a few horrible dizzy spells. I didn't suspect ectopic because I wasn't in pain, and the first consultant I saw told me he was 99% sure it wasn't ectopic. How wrong he was! But thanks to the scan they did follow-up tests, and got me into theatre just in time. I recovered quickly and all is fine now.

PatsyJ · 13/09/2006 13:46

I too can't believe your GP has not sent you for a scan - moron imo. If you are as far on as you think they will be able to see the baby and where it is now.

I would get in touch with your EPU and ask for a scan - explain circs and that you really are worried and can't wait as it's affecting you etc (lay it on a bit). As someone else said you don't always need GP referral. I had bleeding for wks early in my pregnancy and in the end just bypassed my GP (EPU actually said to do this after the first visit as it was taking up his time and I could just go direct).

You should not have to wait - that is just awful - would your GP (assuming he is a man) want his wife to wait that long??? Makes me v IMO I also can't understand why he/she is faffing about with the test again..... Very odd.

Hope you get it sorted soon and your mind put at rest sooner rather than later

heavenis · 13/09/2006 13:49

I can't understand why he hasn't refered you straight away. I was sterilised 3.5 years ago and they told me if you ever suppect your pregnant get in touch with us straight away. Did you have it done at the same time as C-section. ?
