Clothes for when you first pop?

I'll be traveling for 2 weeks for weeks 12-14 so I'll likely start to show on the trip. Seems really difficult to back for! Did you find you needed or wanted to wear different clothes for when you first "popped" or were your normal ones fine? I'm 10 weeks now and in my normal clothes.

If this is yr first you may start showing. A bit later.

Jersey type trousers are comfy or linen that's a bit looser. Maybe even just a hair and to leave your trouser button open a bit & looser or stretch tops.

Congratulations!

LittlePeaPod · 03/07/2014 23:28

Congratulations Op. If this is your first you probably won't start showing till a lot later. I didn't start showing till I was about 20 weeks. I was still in my normal Pre pregnancy trousers at 12/14 weeks.

mrscog · 03/07/2014 23:33

Yeah I didn't really show with DC1 until 22 weeks so if it's your first you might still have a wait. If not I would go for stretchy things, comfortable and more likely to fit well

CursiveLetters · 04/07/2014 04:15

Yup this is my first! I keep reading online you show 12-16 weeks, good to know it can sometimes be a lot later! I am certainly bloated already which a lot of people do seem to confuse for "showing" :p

Also my first and started showing at 14 weeks, either my tummy muscles are fubar'd (likely) or it's gonna be one huge baby! Eeek, so it can happen. I'm only 17 weeks and got asked yesterday 'are you sure there's only one in there'.

Eminybob · 04/07/2014 04:52

I started showing around 12 weeks and this is my first.

He is a BIG baby though! I'm 36 weeks currently measuring 40!

Missingcaffeine · 04/07/2014 07:11

Most of my regular trousers were tight by 9 weeks and it's my first, but I guess I 'popped' at around 16 weeks. Didn't start getting comments/could hide it until about 16 weeks, but I think it was obvious to anyone who knows me before that - but they knew anyway.
I wore lots of long tank style tops (got lots from oasis and next) and bought some under bump maternity trousers from new look which are so comfy. It's a bit hot for those though at the mo if you're travelling anywhere hot. I am currently living in dresses as so comfy, but I'm 28 weeks now.

nc060 · 04/07/2014 07:24

this is my first and I started showing around 13 weeks. Harem pants are quite good as elasticated although very casual! xx

Marnierose · 04/07/2014 07:28

34 weeks and still in normal (although stretchy) clothes. I would have thought you would be fine with maternity jeans and stretchy tops and dresses.

Swifey · 04/07/2014 07:49

Hi there, with my first my husband and I did a driving tour if Europe when I was 6-8 weeks, and I had to undo my jeans on the ferry across the channel!! I had a discernible tummy from then on! Maxi dresses are great, and harem pants, also knickers in one size up are a godsend. This time around, I am now 11 weeks with dc2, I have already been out if my normal jeans etc since about 4-5 weeks. I am a normal size 12, and didn't put on much weight in pregnancy, I just had an enormous bump, and ds was 9.4lbs!! Hope that helps. X

Heatherbell1978 · 04/07/2014 07:50

Also kind of depends on your normal physique. If you're pretty fit with good stomach muscles then you won't show until later. I started getting the first bump signs at about wk16 and it properly popped about wk22. Get bump bands and those elastic expander for your jeans. I was wearing normal skinny jeans until about wk30 with them. Now 34 wks and mainly in all maternity wear at this point.

mummybare · 04/07/2014 08:13

Anything with an elasticated waist or that sits on your hips should be fine. Maybe go for longer tops as if you have a bit of a tummy gaping can sometimes occur!

Oh, and the godsend for me this time has been bra extenders - only a couple of quid but a huge difference in terms of comfort. Great if, like me, you develop the 'comedy boobs' quite early on but they don't actually settle into one size for long enough to buy new bras!

Congrats on the pregnancy and enjoy your trip :)

squizita · 04/07/2014 08:30

At that time I could wear my own clothes with the exception of trousers with a tailored waist, which dug in. Even if you aren't showing (I wasn't) there will be bloat! Oh the bloat!

I found jersey dresses + leggings (or tights, it was winter) perfect - in summer just dresses with a bit of stretch/looseness would do. For jeans, I wore a longer top and used a hair tye looped through the button hole and round the button to add an inch or 2 to the waist.

squizita · 04/07/2014 08:33

Oh and it does vary wildly. Both due to physique and your usual clothes choices.

I can still wear some of my 'regular' clothes at 30 weeks with a big baby. But I tend to wear hip-trousers, leggings and so forth (which I maternitied) with band t-shirts, stretchy tops and tunics, maxis.
Also I didn't show at all until past week 16 and this really is perfectly normal for a 1st baby (I was worried) - especially if you have a sturdy pelvis for bean to hide in. I felt movement before I looked more gone than having had a big dinner!

twiglet2 · 04/07/2014 10:05

I found my usual jeans/skirts etc. felt pretty uncomfortable from 13/14 weeks, so started off with a few basics from ebay - a pair of maternity under bump jeans, a pair of black trousers for under bump and a denim skirt with an elasticated waist band - all bought for less than £15 and really comfy. I'm now 20 weeks and have been buying bits and pieces along the way, not necessarily maternity - just bigger t-shirts or things that stretch. I'd recommend buying a few basics now, because you'll need them at some point soon.

eurochick · 04/07/2014 10:39

Loose or elasticated waists will be fine for a while yet. Maybe buy a couple of bump bands so if you need to undo top buttons or leave a zip down that will be covered.

Cerealaddict · 04/07/2014 12:15

Lots of people saying, oh it's your first you won't pop yet?? Yes because everyones pregnancy is the same???

I was showing from early on, 10 weeks my normal size 8-10 trousers were too tight and it's my first.

Bump bands are a brill idea, i still use mine now, maternity trousers are silly at that stage, though i did buy some under bump ones but waste of money as from 24 weeks they became way too uncomfortable to wear. I got some m/l leggings which are still fine now. Tops wise there are so many in primark that are suitable for a cheap short term option, their vests are long line and elastic, bit tight now but they did great up to 28 weeks in a size 12 for me and i'm still using some of the over vest top type tops in a size 8, it's just looking for the right shape tops really

squizita · 04/07/2014 13:18

I'm 30 weeks, not small and mine are still more comfortable than overbumps, so maybe it depends on what you are used to wearing (eg I wear low rise trousers normally, hate things over my waist).

MsBug · 04/07/2014 13:23

I was pregnant at this time of year and it was great as I just wore floaty dresses or tunic type dresses with leggings if needed.

When I didn't have to leave the house I wore my old thai fisherman's trousers throughout pregnancy as you can tie them as loose as you need to accommodate your bump.

LittlePeaPod · 04/07/2014 13:31

You are right everyone is different. I loved my under bump trouser. I thought the were brilliant. Wore them right till DD was born. Even wore them whilst in labour on the way to hospital. I hated the over the bump. I felt trapped and too hot in them. Also recommend maxi dresses.

I got some lovely stuff from here and bought them all in pre pregnancy size 8/1 and the were comfy all the way through my pregnancy.

ouryve · 04/07/2014 13:45

I popped quite early. Well before 12 weeks.

In my first pregnancy, I wish I'd discovered vertbaudet - they had some lovely trousers which had a waist you could let out as you got bigger, which were fantastic duting my subsequent pregnancies. At their smallest they were good for that slightly too bloaty for pre-pregnancy trousers to be comfortable few weeks. I don't think they have anything with that design at the moment, mind - there seems to be an awful lot of those with the sweaty giant waistbands.

Stretch and elastic at the back is a good way to go. Next have a few styles with a bit of elastic at the side though some of their standard clothes are good if you have a bit of a belly (like me!)

ouryve · 04/07/2014 13:46

Under bump trousers just fell down on me, btw. I had no bum to hang them off.

Artandco · 04/07/2014 13:54

I didn't show until late but would recommend the seraphine dresses linke above. If your planning on breastfeedibg some are suitable for bump before and feeding after and adapt with size so although pricier than some other brands you can get 2 years out of them with pregnancy and feeding etc. more i more children later

LittlePeaPod · 04/07/2014 13:57

Agree. I didn't start wearing my under bump until about 20 ish weeks when my bump popped. I was in normal Pre pregnancy trousers before that.. Agree the trouser with expanding waist were also brilliant. I wore them till about 30 weeks.

Eastwiththem · 04/07/2014 15:59

I had killer bloat in the early weeks (I remember walking home from a restaurant about 8 weeks with my trousers totally undone as my tummy was so big - luckily it was winter so I had a massive coat on too!)

Around 12 weeks it went down and I was able to wear normal clothes until 19 weeks. In the last few weeks I was having to leave the button undone on my jeans or use a bump band to hold them up, but this was more for comfort. I could just about do them up if I held my breath and didn't move!

Currently in underbump jeans and they really vary. I have Gap ones which are pretty comfy and worked well at 20 weeks with a very tiny bump, still look good at 29 weeks with a proper bump. Topshop ones are better looking but fall down all the time, the elastic just doesn't seem to grip very well. Other people rave on them though, so I think it does depend massively on your body shape.

For your trip, I'd pack normal trousers/skirts with a bump band, or outfits with a loose waist like floaty dresses or leggings. You'll probably be able to get away with normal tops at that stage if you go for looser/floaty styles. I have a couple of normal tops that have gathering at the front that still fit me, as does stretchy stuff. Stretchy stuff makes the bump more obvious, which is good in mid pregnancy when you don't want people to think you are fat but I avoided it in the early stages of bump as I hadn't told many people at that stage and didn't want them to guess.
