Big babies

I posted last week about measuring big for my dates. After another midwife appointment today I'm still measuring five weeks ahead and now the plan is to scan every two weeks to keep an eye on things. Baby currently is on the 95th centile (from scan last week).

My first baby was 9lb 9oz and 10 days overdue so I was expecting this baby to be big. However when I was talking to the midwife she said it was unlikely they would induce any earlier than the standard 12-14 days overdue as they don't like to interfere. As much as I agree with this I am wondering what the point of monitoring the baby's size is if they aren't going to do anything differently anyway? I'm due to see the consultant next week so will discuss it then with him.

This post has ended up longer than I planned but I suppose my question is if it was known you were having a big baby did this change how/when you delivered? I'm normally quite laid back but this is playing on my mind!

Ive had stretch marks with the other 2 doesnt bother me any more lol.
Its getting bloody painful!..
Just taken paracetamol for all the crampy and bh!

allisgood1 · 04/07/2014 22:02

I've had two big babies. I was induced with Dd2 at 37+4 and she was 8lb 6oz (under what they predicted). I required forceps with both though and my first was rather traumatic. Therefore, my third WILL be induced a week early but they won't put that down to size (even though I know she will be huge), but rather "maternal anxiety". Whatever. All I know is that I am way too nervous after a very traumatic birth to even chance having it happen again. If you are feeling like you really want an induction I would push for this and not shut up until you get it.

ilovemonstersInc · 04/07/2014 23:11

I will sit there and cry until they listen. I ended up in hdu with ds2. Was in and out (mainly in) for 2weeks!m after i had him. I have a child with sn and health problems for our circumstances, my physical and mental well being I want an induction at 38 weeks. They are term at 37.

eggsnbeans · 05/07/2014 08:12

two of the ladies in my a/n group were to expect gigantic babies, measuring over 95th percentile for everything, Both were born pretty much on EDD and just over 8lb each.

I measured 3-4w behind throughout my second pregnancy and DD2 was 10lb 2oz.

But I believe if you want to be induced early, you should be able to request it! You could just go in for monitoring a couple of times for reduced movement? I think they're normally quite willing to induce you then?

frankiebuns · 05/07/2014 15:33

My sizings were bang on with ds he was 8lb 8 13 days over due but 60cm long, this time I'm measuring 3 weeks over but student midwife doesn't seem bothered with it and says its cos I have a high bmi, my regular midwife puts me 1.5 weeks behind! I'm currently 32 + 5 so I dnt think its a exact science I have a scan in 10 days so we will see! I have spd fibromyalgia so hoping they will bring it forward

ilovemonstersInc · 06/07/2014 08:36

Whats spd fibro....?
I have spd bet never heard of the fibro bit

got scan on Wednesday.

Jakeyblueblue · 06/07/2014 09:01

With my first I measured a cm
Too big all the way through until I got to 37weeks when I measured 4cm ahead all of a sudden. Was sent down for a growth scan but consultant refused to do it. He said ds was just big and that was the end of that. They booked me for induction at 10 days over but I didn't need it, had him on his due date and he was 9 1/2 lbs.
With this pregnancy the same thing is happening. Measuring a 1.5 cm too big at 30 weeks but the midwife is totally unconcerned. Says I've got a "proven pelvis" as already delivered a large baby, and will only send me for a scan if measure over 3cm and even then, that's only because it's policy to do so. Smile

dreamingofwineandcheese · 06/07/2014 11:02

Yes Jakey I have been told that up to 2/3 over or under they don't worry.

I measured spot on throughout my first pregnancy with the result of a big baby so am wondering how big this one is going to be measuring 5 ahead! I will feel better after I have the scan and see the consultant this week. I just want a rough idea of what the plan will be although I know nothing can be set in stone.

I wouldn't mind 2/3 over. Admittedly I would worry about 2/3 under though.

Im a bit more than 2-3 as at 31 weeks (nearly 32) was measuring 41weeks Confused

dreamingofwineandcheese · 06/07/2014 14:18

Was it all of a sudden you measured big Monsters?

I was measured at 16 weeks and it was fine, I didn't get measured at the 21 week appointment as I saw consultant instead and they didn't do it so it was at the 28 week appointment that I was suddenly ahead. I am less worried about it than I was at first, what will be will be but I do want to know how overdue they are willing to let me go.

OP posts:
ilovemonstersInc · 06/07/2014 15:13

I was first measured at 28weeks via scan. I was 5 weeks ahead then. Then at next appointment was6 weeks ahead then at triage it was 10 +weeks ahead

ilovemonstersInc · 07/07/2014 15:35

Op was it your scan today?

Purplehonesty · 07/07/2014 15:53

My first baby was 9lb3oz and I am tiny so I looked like a had swallowed a beach ball. He got stuck and I had a section. Midwife who saw me he day before said he would be around 7lb.
My second was rumoured to be a big baby too and I had another section as I had the choice. She was a teeny 7lb3oz despite them saying she would be the same or bigger than ds.

You can choose a section if you want and you are worried about it. Ask to see a consultant and Insist on extra scans as the midwives I saw didn't get it anywhere near right!

dreamingofwineandcheese · 07/07/2014 20:35

I had my scan today, baby is now above 95th centile and the sonographer mentioned the baby is measuring 32 weeks (I'm 30 weeks). The last scan I had baby was still measuring within normal range for gestation so I guess baby is getting bigger rather than following the same centile line.

I'm due to see the consultant tomorrow morning so will see what he has to say!

OP posts:
ilovemonstersInc · 07/07/2014 20:45

That's not too bad op. They should scan you again to see what baby is doing.

ilovemonstersInc · 08/07/2014 10:24

Good luck op.

Thought id post my charts.

The line above the circle is the actual measurement but she was trying to explain that he should be in the circle but isnt.

Both previous babies were on 53rd centile

dreamingofwineandcheese · 08/07/2014 12:39

When is your next scan Monsters? The consultant today said there are so many variables in fundal height that they don't really go on that to give a clear picture, a scan is much more accurate?

Consultant was very reassuring today he said he's not worried, it's just a big baby Grin He did ask if I wanted a section, I said I would rather not which he agreed with going on my last delivery. Plan is to scan again at 34 weeks and see the consultant and then a plan will be made from there. They aren't going to let me go overdue which I'm relieved about so generally I'm feeling good about it all.

Everyone thought DD was going to be big. She was born at 40+6 weighing 6lbs 8oz!!! If you've got one large-ish one out then you'll probably cope with another.

allisgood1 · 08/07/2014 15:33

I don't think it's reasonable to assume that "if you did it once you can do it again". My body is not meant to birth big babies and I needed help twice. I will probably also need help a third time and I pray I don't have another PPH from having a huge baby. I don't believe the "advice" that your body doesn't make babies that are too big...

ilovemonstersInc · 08/07/2014 15:57

Same here allisgood. I had pph with both of mine 2.5l with last. I think partially due to size as placenta will also be bigger therefore placenta site is bigger so more aarea of bleed. I was really ill last time ended in hdu so very nervous about this delivery. I would go for a section but need to be able to drive very quickly amd be more mobile and recover quickly as ds1 has sn and is in hospital a lot.

dreamingofwineandcheese · 08/07/2014 17:30

I can see what you both mean. Luckily my labour and birth with DS were very straightforward. I got the impression that had it had complications like you both had that things might be handled differently.

Monsters have you seen a consultant yet?

OP posts:
Waggamamma · 08/07/2014 17:43

I think I'm set to join the big baby club too, ds was 9lb 1oz. I'm 31wks with dc2.

We had a shopping delivery last week and the delivery lady was pregnant I said to dh it was a shame she had to do deliveries whilst pregnant although ' she's obviously not as pregnant as me yet'...I just found out she delivered her baby yesterday Blush . My bump is almost double the size of her full term bump eeek!

allisgood1 · 08/07/2014 18:53

ilovemosters: I also don't opt for the section for similar reasons. I need to be back on my feet quickly due to having 2 already! I also still firmly believe that a section wouldn't change anything other than the whole contractions and pushing part...

waggamamma: I saw a client the other week (I'm also 31 weeks), she said "oh, how far along?" I told her. She then told me she is only 10 weeks behind. Skinny as a rail, I had NO idea she was pregnant AT ALL. Not fair!!

ilovemonstersInc · 08/07/2014 19:30

I keep being asked is it twins? Angry

I think its a real concern having bigger babies rather than oh you've had1/2 etc big ones so you'll be ok Hmm

Yep I see the consultant a fair bit, have other medical problems (kidneys, extreme anaemia while pregnant etc) so this surprise pregnancy has really took us by well surprise!

One thing that got me worried was if ive not got gd is there something wrong with him as to why hes so big?

Find out more tomorrow hopefully

keely79 · 08/07/2014 19:36

My first was 10lb 7 when born (12 days overdue) - she measured big and the consultant said that they wouldn't induce, but if I went to 2 weeks overdue, would have to have C section. During the birth, they wouldn't let me eat anything and constantly monitored me (meant I had to remain on the bed wired up) in case she got into distress. In the end, she came out fine! Second time round they were a lot less concerned given the proof that there was plenty of space down there.... Hmm
