Mayonaise

This has probably been asked a thousand times, but my pregnancy paranoia is setting in! Is the mayonaise in pre-packed sandwiches 'safe'. I have a craving for a big fat sandwich from a bakery but am worried about the mayo they use. Do you think it will be safe. I can ask the staff but not sure if they'll know! Sorry for boring paranoid question!

I think its only home made mayo you need to be careful of as shop made stuff is made with dried egg yolk! At least I hope I'm right coz I've been eating loads

shhhh · 07/09/2006 12:48

I would watch bakery sandwiches as it may be homemade mayo and not hellmans etc. If they staff don't know then I would say no..

If it's bought premade from Tesco etc then check the back as it will say if it's pasturised. Usually it is.

TBH my rule is: If in doubt do without. Easy said than done I know (I have been there before and am here again!!) but is it really worth a slight risk..?

I soooooooooo want a Rolo McDonalds Milkshake...hey ho just have to hope they are still around come Jan .

Daisypops · 07/09/2006 12:56

Mixed views then. I've just eaten it & I'm worried now. It was from a well known bakery, do you think they'll use home-made mayo?

Hey, as I read this I too am tucking into a sarnie from a "well known" bakery - I'm pretty sure that they wouldnt use home made mayo... they would risk too many people getting ill from it... not 100% certain.. but hey the sarnie tastes gooooooood!!!

SKYTVADICT · 07/09/2006 13:07

I wouldn't worry. I'm sure a chain store bakery would use helmans or equivalent.

I may be being stupid but what it wrong with Mcdonalds milk shake?

Daisypops · 07/09/2006 13:11

Oh good I'm not the only one then!

Shhh whats wrong with having a Rolo McDonalds Milkshake, Im 25 plus weeks and have been having them lol. They are yummy

pennygaff · 07/09/2006 19:09

is it cos its soft ice-cream? I know that Mr Whippys are off the menu.

Sarah34 · 07/09/2006 19:13

Why cant i have whippy ice cream???.... thought it was made with powdered egg not fresh raw egg

pennygaff · 07/09/2006 19:19

its not the egg, its the bacteria thing because its not properly frozen and it has dairy products in it. But like all these things you have to live your life,..I haven't given up prawns.

Sarah34 · 07/09/2006 19:39

I knew prawns were bad for you just didnt know about the ice cream thing lol. Each to there own eh XXX

Seona1973 · 07/09/2006 19:43

prawns (and other seafood) are fine as long as they are well cooked and part of a hot meal

Daisypops · 07/09/2006 19:54

I've been having prawns cold. The ones from the supermarket say 'cooked peeled prawns' are these not safe to eat? I get so mad with the what not to eat because it seems to be all my fave foods!

OP posts:
pennygaff · 07/09/2006 20:17

Hi Daisypops, those are the ones you those should avoid (must be hot) but those are the ones I eat too
Anyhow my book says you should avoid all cold deli food, Well thats what I live off, and if your not allowed ham from a deli (only pre packed) what about all the sausage rolls I pack away... it is annoying.

Daisypops · 07/09/2006 20:33

Surely if they were such high risk your midwife would tell you to avoid them? The only food my MW told me to steer clear off was peanuts. AAArrgghh it gets me so mad. You can't have too much fish, can 't have deli food, cant have veined cheese... What is it thats in the prawns thats bad for you? Sorry to rant!

Sarah34 · 07/09/2006 20:45

I know you should be able to eat what you want. I fancy eating some cottage cheese but was told that i cant eat that .... dunno why. I try and stay away from all the stuff that you shouldnt eat...pate,prawns,soft cheese etc etc

LucyJones · 07/09/2006 20:46

I've never heard cottage cheese was a no no. What about nuts? I'm just avoiding peanuts but dh thinks i can't have walnuts or any type of nut. I'm sure he's wrong!!

Daisypops · 07/09/2006 20:48

LucyJones -I think other nuts are ok.

OP posts:
Sarah34 · 07/09/2006 20:51

I was under the impression that it was all nuts you had to stay clear of. Dont know for sure tho. They should give us mothers to be a list on what not to eat exactly. Then we would all know for sure.

Daisypops · 07/09/2006 20:55

I agree Sarah34. I've had many sleepless nights worrying about this. I also read runny eggs are a no-no but a friend of mine said runny yolks are ok just not runny white bits!!!??? I just have my eggs scrambled or fried until their well done!I'm still concerned about cold prawns?! Is cottage cheese ok then?
