Mayonaise

This has probably been asked a thousand times, but my pregnancy paranoia is setting in! Is the mayonaise in pre-packed sandwiches 'safe'. I have a craving for a big fat sandwich from a bakery but am worried about the mayo they use. Do you think it will be safe. I can ask the staff but not sure if they'll know! Sorry for boring paranoid question!

here you are a list

most cheese is absolutely fine and i think there's some regulation re mayo which means it is usually pasteurised.

Sarah34 · 07/09/2006 21:23

Im chuffed now....gonna go shopping tomorrow and get a big tub of cottage cheese with pineapple yum yum

fishie · 07/09/2006 21:23

oooh spooky dp

Sarah34 · 07/09/2006 21:28

Thanks Fishie for that link. Spose cooked and peeled prawns are fine then cos they aint raw.

Sarah34 · 07/09/2006 21:32

Mayonnaise, ice cream, salad dressing ? as long as they haven?t been made using raw egg. Generally, mayonnaise, ice cream and salad dressing you buy in shops will have been made with pasteurised egg, which means it?s safe to eat. But it?s better to avoid home-made versions if they contain raw egg. If you're not sure about any of these foods when you're eating out, ask staff for more information

Sarah34 · 07/09/2006 21:33

There i think we're all gonna be safe and sleep much better now knowing this lol.

Daisypops · 07/09/2006 21:36

Fishie, how do you do that!?
Sarah34, not sure about prawns it says cooked AND part of a hot meal .

Daisypops · 08/09/2006 09:24

Sarah34, WOW! Four! Do you have boys or girls? Do you know what this one is? Glad your feeling good. I'm still waiting for my 'blooming' phase! I've been really tired, very pale and spotty-not a good look! No sickness though which is good. x

that ice cream can carry the risk of listeria - not kept cold enough, not cleaned machine out properly.

Again soft cheese - sure as it is not pastuerised risk of illness BUT in other places people eat it all the time so who knows.

shhhh · 08/09/2006 10:56

about mc'd icecream/milkshakes. My mw said avoid them as although they can be made with pasturised milk etc you can't be 100% that the machine isn't harbouring bacteria etc..??? This is the same with Mr Whippy...

Hey I'm only taking the advice of my MW..!!

BTW my point of mayo applies to "local" one off bakeries..You "chain" bakeries should be ok.

TBH all our concerns over possibility of catching samonella etc is worrying about a small percentage of something making us ill. IYKWIM. The chance is very very smil but it's best to avoid if possible.

Sarah34 · 08/09/2006 14:08

1 boy and this will be my 3rd girl Daisypops. This is my last lol. Ive been very spotty andlook rough lol but i feel great

charlii13 · 15/09/2006 14:49

any mayo, as long as it isn't home made is fine - trust me! i have eaten loads of it since my midwife told me it was ok. if you're gonna buy packet sandwiches go for something like Ginsters as these are reputable brands who will be using pasteurised egg in their sandwich mayo's, unlike local bakers who may use home-made mayo.

whoops posted my message twice!

carrotcake · 15/09/2006 18:14

I can't see why any bakery would bother making their own mayonnaise, you usually only get that in posher restaurants, it's a real faff, I'd be amazed if it was Hellmans though, prob tesco own. I'm sure bakery staff could find out fairly quickly.
I know some people who won't let their kids eat whippy ice creams, it's a hygiene thing, those machines can harbour listeria, which although it's rare, there's probably as much chance of getting it there as from cheese, depends how strict you want to be.
As for prawns, I've been eating these in this pregnancy (heated as part of a meal) until last weekend when I got crayfish poisoning. Doctor said there was no risk to the baby, just doubly horrible in pregnancy as your body goes into overdrive getting rid of the toxin. Everyone else was fine but I was vomiting for 8 hours, blood in the end. Not pleasant. As always, it's down to personal choice, but I won't be eating seafood for the duration (23 weeks now) but prob won't ever eat cray fish again!

Daisypops · 15/09/2006 20:50

Carrrotcake-I hope your feeling better. Seeing blood in your vonmit must've been worrying. I was having cold cooked prawns, I've stopped eating them now though just to be safe. I didn't get sickness so I presume I'll be ok.

Sorry if someone has already answered this one,i'm confused about prawns! Is it ok to defrost the ready cooked prawns and just eat them cold? What about ready made prawn cocktail?

TheMaskedPoster · 17/08/2007 16:38

ooo - was just reading this and saw the nut thing ... I have scoffed my body wait in pistachios and was starting to go into meltdown. But having read the 'list' I'm slowly returning to normal ...

Also had a softserve icecream at Southend on Sunday - eek!

tis a confusing time

toadstool · 17/08/2007 16:43

I've eaten prawns, mayo, crab pate and smoked salmon. Still around... As long as it's before the sell-by date, well-cooked/prepared and not eaten every day, frankly, is it worth panicking? There's so much else to worry about.

TheMaskedPoster · 17/08/2007 16:45

wise words toadstool
