a drink a day in pregnancy?

I am a new member and have joined hopefully for some advice and reassurance from non threatening mums! I am 9 weeks pregnant with 3rd child - have 2 boys of 3yrs and 14 months, and am in Germany with Army husband who is about to go away on operations for remainder of pregnancy and birth. I am currently unable to kick the glass of wine a day habit - positively long for it by 7 pm, after a long day with the boys. I am now tearing myself apart with worry that I have already given baby FAS. Do you think there is any point stopping now?

Oh jolly well done.

hunkermunker · 02/09/2006 20:33

And welcome to MN - you do know you'll never be able to leave now though, right? It can be your new habit!

Scoobydooooo · 02/09/2006 20:37

Well done your doing great

SherlockLGJ · 02/09/2006 20:37

Blimey

I sounded like Head girl just then.

hunkermunker · 02/09/2006 20:39

Are you wearing this again, LGJ?

SherlockLGJ · 02/09/2006 20:39

Not tonight you can all have a night off.

Krythia · 02/09/2006 20:40

I think you're right hunkermunker - have been playing on this for over an hour tonight, much to DH's bemusement - still, I am telling him it's giving his ear a rest from being bent....

That's it then, Krythia, you're doomed... Welcome to Hotel Mumsnet - LGJ, you may do the rest of the song

squishy · 03/09/2006 10:53

Well done Krythia!! One night at a time!!!

divastrop · 03/09/2006 17:37

i drank quite heavily in my first pg,well,by medical standards anyway,i wont go into my reasons but anyway,ds1 is healthy phyically but whether it had any effect on anything else i dont know?i drank a couple of glasses of wine 3 or 4 times a week in my 2nd and 3rd pg,last time i gave up altogether in 1st triemester, had the odd glass in 2nd and gave up again after week 25.
this time ive not really thought about it as i never really started drinking again after having dd2,i have had the odd glass of low alcohol wine diluted with lemonade, but since joining mumsnet i havent touched a drop.
my doc said the same to me last time i was pg,that if it relaxed me it was ok in moderation as the stress is even worse for the baby.
i think the baby is only at risk of fas if u drink at least 5 units a night for most of the pg,from what ive read.

Piffle · 03/09/2006 17:48

Krythis really well done

Krythia · 03/09/2006 19:00

thanks piffle! Night 2 and so far so good, even survived a huge humdinger with dh without reaching for the corkscrew. Divastrop, nice to chat on this thread too - and thanks for making me feel SO much better!!!! I do like the logic about the stress thing - I had a friend who had 3 miscarriages and her doc told her not to stop smoking on 4th pregnancy as it was wose for her than continuing (NOT that I am advocating smoking in pregnancy before people get cross with me, just using it as another example)

Hi Krythia. A home-poured glass a day sounds like a bit much to me, but try not to worry too much about the time that's gone by already and concentrate on cutting down a bit, which it sounds like you're already doing, so well done to you!

Krythia · 04/09/2006 19:25

3 nights done, new wine box not opened. I will not bore you all with this for the next 30 weeks, but I may keep poting on this for the next 4 days to take me up to the first week. MANY thanks for your support

Well done Krythia, you're doing very well, especially with a wine box in the house!! Make sure you 'reward' yourself with something else - be it pampering or something edible!!

Krythia · 05/09/2006 20:23

cheers squishy! Cardboard still unopened on box, husband still alive, all is good.

A drink a day sounds good to me! It's good for your heart and oxygenates your blood, so in small doses I believe it's actually beneficial for the baby, especially if you drink Guinness!

I drank about a pint or two a week when I was up the duff!

Daisypops · 05/09/2006 20:35

I had guiness at the beginning of my pregnancy (now 21+5) I've even got a taste for it now! Its low alcohol so quite safe.

Thalia · 05/09/2006 20:38

Hi Krythia. By the sound of your first post it sounds as if you are using alcohol rather than just partaking for enjoyment. That is a lot to deal with (kids, husband going away) but your little baby deserves not to be exposed if you can help it. Every time I go for a scan I am amazed at how perfect and tiny my baby is and I remind myself I must eat more healthily and give it the very best start I can. I saw on a documentary that the umbilical cord can filter out the polio virus and prevent a baby from getting it, but it cannot prevent nicotine or alcohol getting to the baby. Your baby is tiny and helpless and has no say in this matter, try to be as good to it as you can. I read in a Preg and Birth mag this morning that the advice they give in the USA is not to drink at all during pregnancy. All the best, hope you get through the rest of your pregnancy OK.

Krythia · 06/09/2006 22:11

Thalia, please don't try and make me feel any worse than I already do. I know my baby deserves the best, but I am only human and trying to do the best I can.

Krythia, you're doing brilliantly - well done!

squishy · 07/09/2006 08:04

Krythia, you are doing wonderfully - the first few days are the hardest; sounds like you've broken the habitual part now which is great. How are you feeling and how long has it been?

saka · 07/09/2006 08:40

Yes, kyrinthia,

You are doing so well, please please dont feel bad. Thinking of you. There are lots of people here who are really cheering you on.

Yes, every baby deserves the best start, but every mum can only do the best she can, and it sounds like you are doing brilliantly, Krythia. Have been watching this post with interest, you have been honest and open about your difficulties with stopping drinking, and I wish you the best of luck.
