Help me find a cheap nightie for hospital/birth

I know what I want, but hunting high and low I cannot find it! I need to buy something to wear for labour/birth as I really don't own anything that fits the bill.

What I want is:

-button down for skin-to-skin
-short sleeves or vest and cool material
-not skimpy
-dark colour.

Obviously this is perfect as it is designed for the purpose but £40 for something that will probably get trashed seems excessive. So the final criteria is:

-cheap!

Help? Confused

Have you tried Peacocks? I got a couple in there for giving birth - not glam, but they did the trick.

LizzieMint · 22/05/2014 06:41

I got a pack of cheapo button front nighties just in a huge size from sainsburys I think it was (8 years ago!). I wore one in hospital after having my eldest but didn't really need it -during labour just had a hospital gown on (subsequent labours I didn't wear anything as was in a pool at home) Why do you want a dark colour specifically and are you just planning on it for labouring?

WanderingTrolley1 · 22/05/2014 06:44

I got a couple of button-chest nighties from Peacocks.

Not skimpy, decent length, short sleeves.

Try tesco they had a few like that when I was in store looking for one. Think the most expensive was about £8

Got mine from Matalan. Still use them for morning bfs. Although they weren't dark in colour but this was a while ago now. I got blood on one - from the canula in my hand ironically (didn't actually wear it for the birth) but it all washed up fine.

sisterofcaleb · 22/05/2014 06:53

I had this:

m.marksandspencer.com/mt/www.marksandspencer.com/maternity-spotted-minishirt/p/p22291624

I loved it. Didn't get trashed and I wore it constantly for abt 6 months after the birth. Now the buttons have worn out but it was heavy usage! When I looked a few months ago they only had pink...going to order one now :)

Plateofcrumbs · 22/05/2014 06:54

Received wisdom seemed to be dark colours to hide the inevitable stains. But if I ditched that criteria this would do the job.

Summer nightdresses in dark colours just don't seem to be a thing, maybe I should give up on dark?

Ditto to Maralan. Cheap as anything, it got thrown out after.

Plateofcrumbs · 22/05/2014 07:06

That m&s one might fit the bill - not really dark but I could live with that.

Depends what stains you are talking...birth stains (i didn't have any and I hemorrhaged) dark is good. Newborn stains like milk and sick are mainly light coloured and show up on dark. Its a glamorous existence ;)

Hope all goes really well.

Plateofcrumbs · 22/05/2014 07:33

This is good, I need a primer in 'how covered in various bodily fluids can I expect to get during birth' Grin

I've got these PJs for general post-birth wear which I hope are perfect - dark baggy bottoms to conceal bloodied maternity pad stuffed pants, light top to hide milky stains, button down for feeding, attractive enough for photos and could get away with wearing them home from hospital without looking like I'm wearing nightwear.

So maybe I just need something comfy to wear during labour, that may get trashed in the birth but by that point I'll be past caring until I can shower and change into the super-PJs?

I think all I had on was a tshirt and a pair of socks by the end of it all. Not even totally sure about the tshirt actually. Best laid plans and all that hehe!

LizzieMint · 22/05/2014 07:58

Fwiw, I didn't really get much covered in bodily fluids, apart from legs as you'd expect! (Gave birth standing up)
Same can't be said for my poor shoes which were tucked under the bed and right in the splash zone.
Love the pjs, quite fancy a pair myself!

itsonlysubterfuge · 22/05/2014 08:06

I second sisterofcaleb, I had the same thing, but I was able to get it in black two years ago. It is really comfy and I lived in it wore it for ages after giving birth.

Plateofcrumbs · 22/05/2014 08:16

Splash zone - ha! That is a VERY good point though - I'm going to have to ensure DH has a hospital outfit prepared - otherwise I have visions of him missing the vital moments whilst trying to scrub a stain out of a pair of limited-edition trainers Hmm

My mum took out her shoes, the midwife's shoes, my dad's shoes and a student Drs shoes (twins.. everyone wanted to see... their own fault LOL)! Grin

I would try actual granny shops in the style of Bonmarche and QS, they always have button up nighties in stock and are cheap...

Aylish1993 · 22/05/2014 11:32

They do shirt nighties in primark there not maternity but they are fine if you go for a bigger size, they are 7 quid sleeves are down the elbow and the buttons go all the way down to the bottom :)

NickyEds · 22/05/2014 13:03

I got mine which fits your list perfectly from TKMax -about £12 I think

WillYouDoTheFandango · 22/05/2014 13:12

Primark here too. I got one spotty maroon and one spotty black. I think I just got a size 16 (normally a 12).

Try this one...I used it in hospital last week and was ideal

lighteningmcmama · 22/05/2014 18:47

Primark. But anyway who cares about stains, you will change out of it after an hour or so and probably put it in the bin. Also bear in mind you may need to wear a.hospital gown and not your own one depending on the hospital or depending on how your Labour progresses.

littlegreengloworm · 22/05/2014 18:49

I had the M&S one above when I was available in black

I thought it was the business once and long and roomy

Deverethemuzzler · 22/05/2014 18:52

I always got to Primark for those hideous nighties. Once you have worn them during labour and for the first few days you don't want to keep them.
I can't wait to bin them.

WelshWereRabbit · 22/05/2014 18:55

Another vote for peacocks and matalan for chuck away granny nighties. Also got some pjs in Asda about 2 sizes too big and wore the bottoms with strappy vest tops once my catheter was out. Don't forget slippers/flip flops. It's a glamourous time!

icklekid · 23/05/2014 03:03

Oh plate what have you done...I now need the m&s nighty for labour and the la redoute pjs for after. Plus it is 2am and pay day yesterday and I have no will power!
