Insanely active baby suddenly tonight

I'm 26w 5d and my baby has been active every day for weeks but tonight has been unreal. Hard, constant kicks and punches for hours now! What's that all about?

At 26 weeks we're not supposed to read too much into it as their pattern develops at around week 28 (so the literature says).
By the same token - I'd freak out, and ring the hospital (delivery suite / labour ward) to get a more informed, professional oppinion (based on the fact that the usual pattern has changed).
However, it probably is perfectly normal. If you're ever concerned - do not rely on the opions, experiences (as they're all different!), advice of people on Internet forums.

VJONES1985 · 17/05/2014 22:04

Okay, thank you.

Yeah if you ring the mw she will be very helpful she says as someone who has done so SEVERAL TIMES already LOL.

VJONES1985 · 17/05/2014 22:17

I don't have my community midwife's number, only my diabetes midwife's. Guess I could try that but at 10pm on a Saturday I would feel bad.

I'm crying because a 'change in normal activity' can be a bad thing, right? Don't have anyone to call for advice :-(

Mycathasflees · 17/05/2014 22:26

If you are worried, call your delivery suite and ask to speak to a midwife. If you are really concerned, you can go to triage at the hospital where you are booked in for delivery.

Don't stress yourself though. Relax, drink a nice cup of camomile tea and have a rest.

Observer78 · 17/05/2014 22:28

Listen to me, and listen to me good young lady - on the back of your maternity notes is a phone number for hospitals labour ward / delivery suite - RING THEM NOW!!!!

Observer78 · 17/05/2014 22:31

If it helps - I'm in the same boat as you at the moment, but he's being quiet. Doing the whole cold drink, laying on the side, eating, etc bit. I'll give him an hour - two max. If nothing changes I'm driving to the hospital. I'd rather feel a fool than give myself more grey hairs than I already have (all thanks to this baby!).

Please look after yourself xx

VJONES1985 · 17/05/2014 22:35

Well, I've just called the delivery suite and the midwife said movement is good and although it's a change in usual movement, as babies get bigger they sometimes have periods of fidgeting or start to change the way they move. She said she's sure it's fine but to go to triage if I'm worried.

OP posts:
Gingerandcocoa · 17/05/2014 22:39

I've never heard of anything bad coming our of a baby moving a lot? I didn't think there was an upper limit to movements...

My baby moves lots and has been super active since maybe 30 weeks, glad I never thought it could be a problem!

Observer78 · 17/05/2014 22:40

Our hospital is implementing NICE guidelines beautifully, even insist coming in if you're worried. Don't know where you are, we're under King's and I cannot praise their staff highly enough.

Going in might give you a peace of mind. If the hospital isn't far- pop in, you'll sleep a lot better after that xx

VJONES1985 · 17/05/2014 22:41

Thanks, I hope you get some peace of mind too.

Gingerandcocoa advice is that any change in the pattern should be noted. Sometimes babies move too much because they're in distress. Hence the guidelines.

tobysmum77 · 17/05/2014 22:41

It may be baby moving position, ie going to head down.

Penguinita · 17/05/2014 22:43

My baby has been exactly the same tonight, more active than I have ever known before. At one point she kicked so hard I swear I actually heard it! Hmm

Maybe it is the sunny warm weather that has given them a burst of energy?

Gingerandcocoa · 17/05/2014 22:47

Interesting, it never occurred to me...

In my case there's definitely a pattern - a very strong one!!

OP sounds like you might want to get it checked out then...

GingerRodgers · 17/05/2014 22:48

Vjones, have you eaten anything different today/tonight?
Have you done anything very different today activity wise?
It's more than likely just baby having a good fidget but please go to triage if you're worried.
You need your sleep and you won't get that if you are laid thinking 'what if'.

Observer78 · 17/05/2014 22:50

Gingerandcocoa personally I think that may apply later on in the pregnancy due to baby not having his pattern established before 28 weeks. However doubt that it becomes like clockwork on the dot, they may settle into it after 30 weeks?

wasabipeanut · 17/05/2014 22:56

My first pregnancy was like this. Around 24 weeks or so I went to see Acorn Antiques the Musical and had to leave the auditorium during a big tap dancing number because I was being kicked to pieces. At a wedding which included a fireworks display a few weeks later I actually cried because my ribs burned and I was beaten up from the inside out.

He is now 6. Beautiful, funny and still utterly hyper. Loads of sport.

Brace yourself - they show their character early!

VJONES1985 · 17/05/2014 23:01

I haven't done anything especially different today though. Am usually very busy and active at work all day but today, being the weekend, I visited my grandad in hospital where I sat down for hours, went to my nan's house where I sat down for hours, then came home and ate dinner. Ha ha!

OP posts:
wasabipeanut · 18/05/2014 00:03

Chances are you've noticed the activity more because you've been more sedentary. Also, when you're more active the baby gets rocked to sleep because of the motion. If you've sat around more he'll be awake more.

ShakyTheStork · 18/05/2014 00:37

Ok, it's probably normal. BUT (and this goes for all of you pregnant ladies out there) if you are concerned and are wondering whether you need to speak to a midwife, it means you do!

Out of hours call your local delivery suite, they will gladly see you daily if need be. Better to get checked out and be reassured than sit at home worrying.

Same advice applies when you have a newborn baby, if your instinct asks you if you need to see a doctor, you do.

I am a community midwife and although we cannot do a monitoring before 28 weeks I would ask you to come and see me for a check up today,

Just a reminder for everyone, if you are ever concerned about the pattern of your baby's movement, please call your midwife or local delivery suite as soon as possible, please, NEVER leave it until the next day.

VJONES1985 · 18/05/2014 08:33

Thanks shaky. I called the midwife last night and she said it all sounds normal as the baby is getting bigger and just practising a new movement or fidgeting a lot, but said to go to the hospital if I was worried.
