Does baby size run in families?

I was just wondering if you are more likely to have a big/small/average baby if other members of your family have had big/small/average babies, assuming you go to full term or thereabouts? Or is it all just down to the individual woman and each pregnancy.

Big babies seem quite common on my mum's side of the family. I am a twin, so obviously my brother and I were a bit smaller (although we still added up to nearly 13lbs between us). But my mum was 9.7 and her sisters were 10 something and 11 something. And most of my cousins were around the same sorts of weights.

i'm 27 weeks and measuring totally average so far....

Completely down to each pregnancy, I've had 3 measuring from 7lb to 7lb 11, my sister's have all been around the 9lb mark, my mum had 4 around the 6lb 5 mark.

SmashleyHop · 05/05/2014 16:23

My husbands family all have 10-11 pounders (which my MIL loved to frighten me with) my mom had 8-9 pound kids.. I've had 3 kids and my heaviest was 6 pounds 10 ounces. My sisters were pretty small too. I'd say it's individual.

Chipandspuds · 05/05/2014 16:26

I think it's hard to say, DM had 3 babies all under 7lbs and DS was 9lbs 1oz!

Bunbaker · 05/05/2014 16:28

I was under 7 lb and DD was under 6 lb, but in my case it was because I have a unicornuate uterus.

Salazar · 05/05/2014 16:31

Rugby playing DH inflicted giant babies on my tiny frame. Everyone in his family is a giant. I blame him completely.

LettertoHerms · 05/05/2014 16:33

I think a bit of both. I think it can run in families, but there are also individual factors. Maybe similar eating habits within a family account for some of it as well.

No babies yet, but my mom had 7 pound babies, we have a similar (petite) structure and I would expect similar babies... except that DP comes from a family of large, athletically built people, none under 6', all big as babies/children, and it seems dominant genetically (any short people marrying in have big children) so I do believe I'll have big babies... time will tell!

Heatherbell1978 · 05/05/2014 16:37

I've wondered this as my DH and I were both under 7lbs and neither of us are particularly huge now. My brothers were also small babies. But....both of our mums smoked when they were pregnant with us back in 1978...tut tut....so it's hard to make a proper comparison. My 25 wk bump is solid as a rock so my mum keeps telling me that it's all baby in there and potentially a big one at that.....thanks mum...

Wolfiefan · 05/05/2014 16:37

I was 5lb something at birth. My kids were both closer to 9!

LizzieMint · 05/05/2014 16:39

Def down to each pregnancy, my smallest was 7lb 4oz, my biggest was 9lb 6oz. My sister had one whopper and one tiddler, we were all very average sized when we were born. No rhyme or reason!

Lioninthesun · 05/05/2014 16:43

I was a 7.3 but DD was 10.1 - her dad's mum warned me when I was pg that they used to call him Little Bhudda as he was a large baby too Grin I think it does make a difference as, although I got progressively chunkier until toddlerdom where it wore off, DD has lovely chunky legs even now at nearly 3. Ex thinned out so not bothered too much but glad I had her via the sunroof!

Nunyabiz · 05/05/2014 16:44

Well it's generally acknowledged that genetics play a part.

For what it's worth, it's hard to tell what size your baby will be at full term at 27 weeks, as they usually do most of their fattening up in the last few weeks.

FWIW, I was 9lb 12oz, sis was 8lb 12oz
My mum was 9lb
My Dd was 10lb 5oz
Due DD2 in a couple of weeks and she's measuring 2 weeks ahead.

My husband is very tall, I am also very tall, Dd is 98th centime for height and always has been.

Cookiechef · 05/05/2014 16:49

Me and my sis where 3.5 as we were born at 30 and 33 weeks, her son and daughter where born on there due dates where 6.6and 7.3. My ds was born at 36 weeks and was 6.1 pounds. His dad and his 4 siblings where all different weights when they where born.

Firstpregnancy2014 · 05/05/2014 16:53

This interests me massively! Everyone on my side have pretty much been 8-9lb and 8-10lb on oartners side- they're all very talk too however I'm only 5'4!
Everyone's told me 'not to bother with newborn go straight for 0-3 clothes cause it'll be massive'
Like I wasn't scared enough!

LizzieMint · 05/05/2014 17:38

Firstpregnancy, my sisters the same height as you but had a 10lber. I had two tiddlers and one whopper and honestly the whopper was by far the easiest birth. If you are upright, gravity helps more. And despite the body size, there's not much difference in head diameter really, and that's the bit that matters! You'll be fine. Smile

AmandaTanen · 05/05/2014 17:59

My sisters and I babies have all been over 9lbs, and DHs side have all been 9lbs something too.

Darksideofthemoon88 · 05/05/2014 20:04

I've been wondering this: my mam's mam had three massive babies (certainly massive back in the late 40s and early 50s!), all over 9lb, despite being only 4'11. My mam had me and my brother, both bigger than average. Then there's me....first baby and worried, especially given my partner is 6ft3!

babyboomersrock · 05/05/2014 20:28

Mine weighed:

9lbs 7.5oz

9lbs 2oz

11lbs 3oz

9lbs 2oz (again)

My non-pregnant weight was just under 8 stone and I'm only 5 foot 2" - but all the women on my father's side had big babies ranging from 9-11 pounds. My children were chunky at birth, but slender as children and adults.

Oh, and the 11-pounder was a straightforward (if slow) delivery with only a slight tear.

Nunyabiz · 05/05/2014 21:43

Shock 11lb3!!! Was he/she overdue?!

babyboomersrock · 06/05/2014 00:53

The 11lb 3oz son was 42 weeks, but so was my first (9lbs 7.5).

The 9lb 2oz babies were born at 40 weeks.

No gestational diabetes or anything although I gained a lot of weight each time - I had a good appetite and ate healthily. Back to pre-pregnancy weight by 6 weeks, though - breastfeeding/carrying huge babies helped!

Mutley77 · 06/05/2014 02:34

I think there is an element of genetics but you can't always tell which way!

My DH's mum had fairly big babies - between 8.5 and 10 pounds - and was 10 pounds herself apparently!

My mum's babies were between 6.5 and 7 pounds. I had big ones (all 3 over 8 pounds even though 2 of them were born at 37 weeks) whereas my sister had little ones (max of 7 pounds for her 3).

ikeaismylocal · 06/05/2014 06:08

I had an appointment with a Dr specialising in pregnancy as i'm worried baby #2 will be bigger than 10 pound ds. The Dr said that how effective your placenta is is genetic ( only from the mother's familiy so big/little-dps don't influence baby size) there needs to be additional calories for the placenta to absorb to have a big baby but the potential is bassed on genetics.

Shreddiez · 06/05/2014 06:27

My FiL was 12lbs 7oz, my nieces and nephews (on that side of the family) were all over 10lbs. I wasn't too worried as my side of the family were all small babies, I myself was 6lbs, surely it's the mother's genes that matter, then I had three babies and each was over 10lbs. They are all 50th centile as children but something about DH's genes ensures huge babies.

KaFayOLay · 06/05/2014 06:30

I am an identical twin.
My sister's 3 pregnancies resulted in bigger babies than both my 2.

My smallest was 6lb 7oz, hers was 8lb 10oz.

Lozmatoz · 06/05/2014 07:32

I was 9lb 13 when born, my brother and sister were similar. All my cousins were bigger do I was expecting a huge baby. But at 2 weeks late my DS was only 7lb 7. Depends on you and your partner

mrsnec · 06/05/2014 07:49

Dh and I both had the same birth weight of 7.2lb and were both a week early so it will be interesting to see what happens.
