Did anyone try to conceive a boy and get one?

I know it's old wives tales, but I'd really like one and wonder if anything works!

How

ChicaMomma · 30/04/2014 11:52

I did.. and i got one!! (well, so i've been told by the sonographer..)

The key thing is proximity to ovulation so you will need the sticks..

I was also advised to (incoming TMI) masturbate twice after DTD to help the boy sperm mobilise even quicker and get them to the egg before the girl sperm.. the contractions of the orgasm assist with this..

diet wise getting more potassium and less calcium and magnesium should also increase your chances of having a baby boy. The logic behind this is that potassium helps your body create thicker cervical mucus, which slows down the female sperm.

check this out on the diet side of things:

have zero idea if any of it helped- but i am carrying a boy!

ChicaMomma · 30/04/2014 11:53

Oh- using PreSeed and taking Robitussion apparently also helps- preseed get the boy sperm to the egg quicker, robitussin gives you thicker cervical mucus which is pro-boy..

god, i sound like a saddo, dont i?

croquet · 30/04/2014 11:55

And is the idea to not have sex in the days before ovulation - get your partner to save it all up iyswim?

croquet · 30/04/2014 11:57

i.s. did you not do it that month until you were ovulating? Did you test with a stick and then wait 12 hours (just read that online)!

ChicaMomma · 30/04/2014 12:00

yeah test with the stick and wait til you are at your peak fertility.. the closer you are to peak, the better a chance of a boy, statistically.. as they swim faster but die sooner if that makes sense.

no need to save it up- the sperm that is- but if i'm honest, i did give him a hand job 2 days beforehand- as you dont want stale sperm either!!! it's all so clinical isnt it!! they only need 2 full days to replenish sperm.. no need to save it up any longer than that, it would only be stale sperm he'd have.

lucyfluff · 30/04/2014 13:13

No but expecting fourth son Smile

Dtd every two days prior to ovulation so maybe it was that??

Elastigrrrl · 30/04/2014 13:23

Unfortunately none of the good quality research on gender selection has found that anything works (the faster/slower sperm thing is probably a myth). So it may be best to adjust your expectations, but good luck anyway.

sarahquilt · 30/04/2014 13:39

Scientifically impossible to influence either way, I would have thought.

ChicaMomma · 30/04/2014 14:23

Whether or not that is the case Sarah/Elasti, she may as well try the myths than not. They worked for me- albeit it would have had a 50% success rate anyway!

I've had 7 friends have babies to date this yr- all using ovulation sticks and all DTD at peak fertility (we are all aged 37/38 so needed all the help we could get!)). .. so far- 100% boys.. i'll be the 8th boy.

While there is certainly no way to guarantee it, she may as well give the 'myths' a go in any event. My SIL has 4 kids, boy/girl/boy/girl, she swears blind she planned them that way and it was her advice i followed this time.

squizita · 30/04/2014 15:23

The only thing which influences it (and this is on a population-wide level) in terms of my research is nutrition.
However, as it's more a 60/40 split in places with extremely high fat/protein (boys) or extremely high veg/fibre (girls) so no guarantee changing diet will influence anything!

ChicaMomma · 30/04/2014 15:26

Actually, FWIW, i was pretty much paleo when we conceived... which would obviously be high fat/protein.. v lo carb..

there are absolutely NO guarantees, but she may as well give it her best shot anyway! Nothing to lose!!

Elastigrrrl · 30/04/2014 16:44

Yes, little to lose in following suggestions, just suggesting OP keeps reasonable expectations. The research I'm referring to looks at babies in their thousands rather than small individual samples. I'm too lazy to find the citations though, so I'll leave it at that.

Rosie2011 · 30/04/2014 17:01

i was not trying at the time but i conceived a boy bang on ovulation day. friends that have had sex 3-4 days before have had girls x

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 30/04/2014 17:06

Hmmm....well this time we DTD only the day before and the day after ovulation. So by that rule this one should be a boy?

We will have to see!

Heatherbell1978 · 30/04/2014 19:51

I have to say that I too was using ovulation sticks and waited to get my 'smiley face' on the digital sticks before DTD. I'm also carrying a boy......never really thought about it before but very interesting!

Lozmatoz · 30/04/2014 20:56

Has the world gone mad? The gender depends on which sperm carrying an X or Y chromosome makes it into the egg first. If anyone could control it, there wouldn't be the terrible stories of some cultures murdering baby girls or tetminating pregnancues because the belief that boys are better exists.

Those who think they've 'decided' themselves and got what they wanted? It's 50/50 chance, so half of them are going to say it works.

pommedeterre · 01/05/2014 08:17

I have two dds conceived in the summer and am carrying a boy conceived in the winter.

So time of year is crucial

2tired2bewitty · 01/05/2014 08:23

Don't come and work in my office, where 7 out of 9 babies born or expected in the last 18 months or so have been girls Smile

springsummerautumnpresents · 01/05/2014 08:29

ChicaMomma I was also told if the woman orgasmed after the man ejaculates in you then it is more likely to be a boy as it changes the PH level in the vagina.

croquet · 01/05/2014 11:57

Ok thanks all. I think I'll have a stab at it.
Those who've done the stick/ timing, how many days before ovulation did you stop having unprotected sex. Or did you just not have it apart from that day?
Never got these sticks before. Just finished my period. When should I start testing?

OP posts:
croquet · 01/05/2014 12:00

p.s. Don't worry all I'm only doing it lightly / for a fun chance -- I'll be delighted if I conceive one of either sex!!

OP posts:
croquet · 01/05/2014 12:01

p.p.s. Lozmatoz I appreciate your scientific realism!

ChicaMomma · 01/05/2014 12:02

How long is your cycle?

mine is/was 25 days, so my peak was at day 12. everyone's is different though.

we DTD on day 11&12 (nothing since day 7) and that was the month i conceived the boy..

croquet · 01/05/2014 12:04

I'm not sure how long it is. More like 28 days I reckon. Ok so you just held off a bit before The Big Day. Did you start with the sticks on about day 7? How many of the things does one buy?

I feel like a medieval witch doctor!
