Talk to me about muslins...

Not the most thrilling title for a talk thread I'm afraid! Grin

Am 32 weeks preg with first baby and have been getting bits and bobs together for when she arrives.

My friends with babies have not used muslins, but a work colleague raves about them. Do you/did you use them? If so, what for?

And while we're at it, are there any useful little bits that you think are invaluable that a clueless first time mum might forget or not know about?

I found them an absolute life saver! In the early days I use to use them as a nursing cover or used to tuck under the bottom of my bra to hide my belly if it was exposed while feeding. Then used to use to wipe up sick whilst winding. A changing mat. To put under baby's head in pram/Moses basket in case they are sick. Other uses are an impromptu bib, I've even used one to wash down a manky looking changing mat in mothercare changing room! I would at least get one pack and carry a couple in your changing bag. You may find that you don't use them but they turned out to be one of the most used things we bought.

ilovepowerhoop · 19/04/2014 17:39

no, never used them

CitrusyOne · 19/04/2014 17:40

Same as drama, I used them for all of those things when dd was tiny, and now she's 18 months I use them for various other things- sick bugs, nose wiping, changing mat when we're out and about. Have a drawer full and still not ready to chuck them.

jerryfudd · 19/04/2014 17:41

Loved them. Used to wipe up all manner of messes. Still carry them in bag now despite oldest being 4 as great for wiping down after falls, drying swing seats etc

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 19/04/2014 17:41

Yes we used them. DS was a refluxy, vomity baby and I was forever using them to wipe him up. Also I used to hang one over the hood of his pushchair when he had a nap when it was sunny out to shade him.

Wherediparkmybroom · 19/04/2014 17:41

Totally the most important buy! Cover up, mop up sick, emergency baby wipe and you can boil wash them! Even have used them as a sunshade!

fusspot66 · 19/04/2014 17:41

I say buy a 3 pack and see. If you have a baby who possets you will be glad to protect your clothes/ shoulders from yuck. They can usefully catch milk when feeding BF or FF. They can hide a bit of boobage when feeding outside, Shade the pram, pat a bum dry after a change. And maybe your 7.8 yo DC will still be sucking one at night as a comforter!

Onlyconnect · 19/04/2014 17:43

Impromptu hat, mopping up, sun shade, changing mat......very handy.

NeedaDiscoNap · 19/04/2014 17:44

Thanks for all the replies - I'm adding them to my list - they sound very useful!

Need to get googling for cheaper packs as the only ones I've seen were £9.99 for three - that sounded awfully expensive, unless that's the going rate?

Going to IKEA any time soon? They have nice, big, funky-patterned ones for pennies.

Lagoonablue · 19/04/2014 17:47

V v useful. My kids are 8 and. 4 now so now use them for dusters or ironing delicate clothes. Great for babies as outlined above.

TaurielTest · 19/04/2014 17:47

(Well, 3 for 2 anyway.)

FamiliesShareGerms · 19/04/2014 17:48

If you have them you will use them for everything - just remember to wash them before first use. Patterned ones are helpful to recognise your own at play group. IKEA cheapest I've seen

kally195 · 19/04/2014 17:50

Check the supermarkets - my mum picked me up 3 packs from Asda (think they were 3 per pack , so 9 for 9). Baby not here yet so haven't road tested them, but they seem good enough quality, big and have washed really well.

Sainsburys do them as well, and have a baby event coming up so they will probably be on offer.

NeedaDiscoNap · 19/04/2014 17:50

Good tip Puddock!

Been looking on Amazon and there are some good deals on there too.

I loved John lewis ones. We used loads as DD had reflux til 18mths.

JenBehavingBadly · 19/04/2014 17:52

I had loads of them. Brilliant things that can be used for anything.

My dd got very attached to them and used them as a security blanket. She rubbed them against her face and carried one everywhere. The great thing was they were interchangeable so if she lost one we always had spares.

ParkingFred · 19/04/2014 17:53

These are gorgeous

I bought them for my friend. They're big so double up as swaddles. She raves about them.

MrsCakesPremonition · 19/04/2014 17:54

You should be able to get them from about £1 per square in multipacks from places like Asda or Tesco.

OhTheDrama · 19/04/2014 17:56

Keep an eye out at Asda and Tesco baby events as they either sell them really cheap or put them on buy one pack get one free. Asda have a 3 pack for £3.50 at the moment. I also have some giant Muslims from here that are great for swaddling.

OhTheDrama · 19/04/2014 17:58

Sorry muslins! Silly iPad!

AntoinetteCosway · 19/04/2014 18:04

DD is 2.6 and still sleeps with one, runs it between her fingers as a comforter if she's poorly/upset etc. I also still use them occasionally as impromptu bibs. In fact now I'm pregnant with DC2 I'm going to get a new set as DD is so attached to hers!

Susieloo · 19/04/2014 18:04

I second parkingfred. They are brilliant and I used them as a top sheet when weather was too warm for anything else and also used them straight out the bath as ds usually wanted a feed straight away so would wrap him up in one-I got 4 plain white ones from TK Max that were quite cheap.
