Talk to me about muslins...

Not the most thrilling title for a talk thread I'm afraid! Grin

Am 32 weeks preg with first baby and have been getting bits and bobs together for when she arrives.

My friends with babies have not used muslins, but a work colleague raves about them. Do you/did you use them? If so, what for?

And while we're at it, are there any useful little bits that you think are invaluable that a clueless first time mum might forget or not know about?

Supermarkets and ikea!

Another one agreeing with all of the above uses, I used them most nights in DSs Moses basket because he was a sicky baby and as an impromptu sunshade when the parasol didn't quite cover enough

CorrieDale · 19/04/2014 18:10

Bought loads to use with DS and never used them at all so NCTed them. Didn't bother buying any for DD. turns out she had reflux and I ended up buying a dozen of them. They got used a lot!

NeedaDiscoNap · 19/04/2014 18:10

I'm definitely going to get some. Asda have a baby event on so think I'll see if I can find a pack there. They sound like a godsend!

Yes great things. Impromptu bib, wipe, hat. Children now 9 and 7 and they are still used around the house.

Mepmep · 19/04/2014 18:23

Used them for pretty much everything described above except to protect my clothes from baby spit and vomit. We toted the muslins around on our shoulders all day, and for the one split second we didn't have one on, DS would throw up.

Mepmep · 19/04/2014 18:29

Also. When the DC stops using them, you can use them to wash your face (the hot cloth cleansing method).

crashbangboom · 19/04/2014 18:33

Just to say Johh lewis are 6k £8.50 only a little more expensive than asda.

When my ds had muslins from asda 6yrs ago quality was great. By the time DD was born 2.5yrs ago still use able. However the newer asda ones werent as good as quality. JL was much thicker.

We had about 30 or so of different brands at one point!

CitrusyOne · 19/04/2014 20:48

If you can get to aldi when they're having a baby event then theirs are cheap, soft and big, and wash and tumble dry brilliantly.

theborrower · 19/04/2014 21:13

We got a 12 pack of white muslins from mothercare, were pretty cheap as far as I remember.

Tip - wash them before using for the first time, or they won't be as absorbent.

We found them really handy for mopping up spills, putting on changing mat, putting on mattress sheet to catch possets (so you don't have to keep changing sheet), make shift bibs, sunshade, boob cover etc.

ILoveYouBaby · 19/04/2014 21:17

They're wonderful, I have about 20 ranging from the small and scratchy (boots) to gorgeously soft and huge (littlebamboo). I use them for everything and get through at least 2 a day.

GreatJoanUmber · 19/04/2014 21:56

Absolutely essential Grin They have bazillions of purposes, most notably dealing with spit-up (thrown over shoulder) and breastmilk spray (when baby comes off during let down!).
My oldest, who is now 5, still uses mussies as comforters. He is a real addict, so we have about a hundred; although I've recently plundered his stash to take a few to use for my youngest Wink

StretchyBunny · 19/04/2014 21:56

I use loads! I have an oversupply and get through at least two a day tucking them into my bra and folding around my DS to catch the milk from breastfeeding. I found a brand called Muslinz to be the best (from amazon). They are bigger than mothercare ones and more absorbent.

How do people wash theirs? I can't seem to get the old milk smell completely out even on a boil wash.

weebigmamma · 19/04/2014 23:50

I didn't use them at all with first child. Now we've just had number 2 and I'm wondering how on earth we coped without them the first time around. I sling one over my shoulder at every feed so I don't get puked on but I also use them for general mopping up and for when i need to put the baby down on a cold surface like his changing mat, or if I'm putting him down on the bed to change his babygro I can put the cloth under him so if he pukes the bed is protected. I've also used one to temporarily wrap him up if he gets cold during a feed. If I stick on on my shoulder before starting a feed then it's always there for whatever I need it for.

pickletalk14 · 20/04/2014 11:26

If you want the large ones summer infant are half the price of the aden and anais ones (the 'prince george' ones) and still have nice patterns.

I also have rainbow set from mothercare (in sale) and they looked so pretty all lined up drying after their first pre use wash.

Just need the baby to arrive now...!

boopdoop · 20/04/2014 14:14

Used them all the time... Bought various ones and found asda's the cheapest and nicer/softer then many of the others.

satintaupe · 20/04/2014 14:25

Yes, we used them all the time for the first six months or so, as DD was frequently sick after feeds.

CorporeSarnie · 20/04/2014 15:05

This wee is a baby week... get thee to an ALDI Grin

CorporeSarnie · 20/04/2014 15:06

oh ffs

CorporeSarnie · 20/04/2014 15:06

but I have (thankfully only very occasionally) mopped up a puddle with a muslin

DorothyBastard · 20/04/2014 15:22

A midwife gave me a handy muslin tip: wear one inside your bra for a bit, and then put it in the Moses basket, that way baby will be comforted by your smell when you put them down. Seemed to work for us.
