Hello ladies, my little one is now one and so I am feeling a little out of touch on this subject. I have two friends who are pregnant and want to buy them a gift. One is 4/5 months and the other 7/8 months.

What have you recieved that has touched you, or been lovely or just plain the best gift.

or ideas on what you would have loved to recieve if someone had just seen it or thought about it...

all ideas gratefully recieved

a weekend here (www.greatexpectations.uk.com) or a pregnancy spa weekend (from very rich friends or DH !!) massage oils...or an offer to pre-booked baby sitting session for when new arrival gets to around 4/5 months old.

A friend of mine turned up at my house a month before my due date with about 10 precooked. home made meals for the freezer...I laughed at her when she did it...then it all made sense when I had DS (especially when he arrived 3 weeks early !!) What a lovely friend you are, I hope they apprecaite your kind thoughts.....

Sleep! Closest might be the baby-sitting session that Steppy1 refers to, whether it's a night out or just an hour one day so that you can get a bath safe in the knowledge that baby is being looked after - I know that sounds odd, but being given an hour or two of someones time to use as you wish is unusual and useful! Could include alternatives on list including ironing, cooking, lunch out...

a big cake

Morningnewspaper · 02/08/2006 22:52

Clarins Tonic Oil - the creme de la creme of 'bump oil' - quite strong smelling but amazingly effective!

Also brill book.....Best Friend Guide:pregnancy by Iovine Vicky if its their first pregnancy. A frank and factual book which tells you all the things that only your friends will tell you!

olivo · 03/08/2006 08:39

or "the best friends guide to the first year of motherhood" for the friend who is nearly there - it was bought for me, its great!

humpydumpy · 03/08/2006 08:46

I second the Clarins Oil, it is fab stuff. When I was pregnant a friend gave me it and also some nice bubble bath and lotions.

SenoraPostrophe · 03/08/2006 08:52

yes, babysitting is the best gift imo.

newspaper - have you gone upmarket or are you an imposter or what?

MrsBadger · 03/08/2006 08:54

glamourous yet cosy new dressing gown for the 4-5 month-er who's having a winter baby
never in your life do you spend so much time wearing it and it can make those 3am wakeup calls just that tiny bit more bearable

mazzystar · 03/08/2006 08:58

when the babies arrive....touche eclat and lipgloss

one of the nicest things i got was a beautiful photo album (very simple, plain but luxurious) with a few very early photos taken by friend at hospital, including one of me with enormous bump

Wisp · 03/08/2006 09:51

The best gift I had was some lovely aromatherapy massage oils, for pregnancy.I used them all the time, and I'm sure they stopped the stretchmarks, when I had terrible ones with my previous pregnancies.
What a thoughtful friend you are !

Morningnewspaper · 03/08/2006 12:02

SenoraPostrophe - I think I may be an imposter - I spotted yesterday someone called Morningpaper (which isn't me) - I should really change my nickname!!

Tutter · 03/08/2006 12:03

agree re clarins oil - i got through 2 bottles when pg with ds - gained 3 stone but no (new) stretchmarks

melrose · 03/08/2006 12:08
  • Nice oils/ bath stuff
  • reflexology treatment for the one nearing the end of pregnancy, best treat I gave myself in the last few weeks and helped lots with swollen ankles

  • Lovely PJs for hospital, My Mum bought me some and made me feel vaguely attractive when DH came into see me the morning after.

  • Nice changing bag that looks like a sylish handbag rather than a school bag!

  • if v good friend add in papaer pants, lanisoh nipple cream and maternity pads!!

Definitely stuff for them not the baby, they'll get plenty of that after the birth.

and I want you as my friend

SenoraPostrophe · 03/08/2006 15:26

moriningnewspaper: yes, I was mixing you up with morningpaper. how funny that you should choose such similar yet non mumsy nicknames. perhaps you're psychic twins.

SenoraPostrophe · 03/08/2006 15:28

oh and back to the thread: not a prezzie I received but I bought a preg friend a really nice fluffy dressing gown which went down very well indeed (she said "coming home to a nice new fluffy dressing gown is the second best thing there is to coming home with a new baby" which made me laugh).

redz · 03/08/2006 20:48

I was given a baby book by a close friend. And I absolutely love it. There's sections to put your first scan pics, pics of you and partner all the family. And then it takes you right up untill the baby's one. First toy first xmas etc etc. I cant wait to fill out all the different sections.

CMac · 03/08/2006 20:56

Best thing I got while pregnant was a pair of big cozy wooly stripy slipper-socks that I wore constantly during the first few weeks of motherhood. Only useful for winter birth though...

bettythebuilder · 03/08/2006 22:07

Like the dressing gown idea.
A v. good friend (notsogummysmummy) bought me some lovely travel sized smellies that I took to hospital with me. Every time I smell it now I remember that first wonderful post-birth shower!
Oh, and of course a Baby Feed Wheel card goes without saying.

aitch71 · 03/08/2006 22:35

god, have i gone mad? i think the feed wheel card is a good present...

i second the home-cooked meals to go in the freezer, by the way. my friend did it for me and it was bliss.

bettythebuilder · 04/08/2006 10:36

You're not mad, aitch71! The Baby Feed Wheel is a brill present (I invented it!)

Axolotl · 04/08/2006 10:52

Absolutely tops, which I buy for all preg friends: Zita West Down Under Cream. It's this magic balm for your bits post-birth. QUite expensive - about £19, but worth every last penny!

eenywifemum · 04/08/2006 10:53

wow an inventor on MN!

fullmoonfiend · 04/08/2006 10:54

No, the feed wheel is a fab idea!

(well done betty! Nice plug there )

bettythebuilder · 04/08/2006 11:03

Why thank you fmf..

(I do my best...)

aitch71 · 04/08/2006 12:31

oh righto bettythebuilder(andinventor), i thought you were being sarcastic...
it's an excellent idea, i'm going to bookmark and order them for preggo pals in future.

axolotl, i bought that down under cream and i thought it stung like the blazes. i wonder why that would be? i didn't tear, just had a lot of grazing (midwife commented that 'it's like a skint knee down there') so perhaps that's why.
