Well, I'm about six weeks pregnant. So far today I have visited the loos about five times to retch, have actually thrown up about twice - breakfast and then mid-morning snack. So far lunch is staying down - lucky! Have zero concentration, in part because DS woke up at 5.30am. Luckily I have nothing urgent on and my boss is really busy so hopefully hasn't noticed. Even looking at Mumsnet makes me feel sick, must be all those words scrolling by. Just had to moan - can't believe I've got at least another month of this to go if not more....

florence, try getting some of those wrist band things that are used for travel sickness - they do help X

pollingfold · 05/03/2004 14:00

Had this with 1st pg

I know it seems the last thing you want to do, but eat and rink plenty of water.

If the actual vomiting continues at more than 3 times a day for 3 days you should see your doctor, and they can prescribe you something that may help

Twinkie · 05/03/2004 14:07

ooohhhh - looking forward to this - NOT!!

Sorryt o hear you are poorly have you tried ginger?? Not sure if olds wife tale or truth but it apparently stops you feeling sick??

I was not sick ever when pregnant before - does this mean I won't be with this one or is it the luck of the drawer??

bossykate · 05/03/2004 14:16

congratulations my recommendation is to eat something as soon as you feel nauseated. something like cream crackers, digestives or ginger biscuits. i'm currently carrying round a tupperware box of digestives so i'm never caught out - this is since i nearly heaved on the tube. nice. hope you feel better soon.

Twinkie · 05/03/2004 14:19

And you can always lob the biscuits on the floor and yack up in the tupperware box -

Mum2Ela · 05/03/2004 14:19

I have just found out today that I am pregnant and I feel sick, not due to pregnancy, but due to the amount of alcohol I consumed last night ().

Am soooo excited, though I didn't get sick at all with DD so am hoping not to with this one too.

But, may I suggest ginger also?

x

ps. are you on the Oct or Nov thread?

Twinkie · 05/03/2004 14:26

ooohhhh ooooohhh oooohhhh congratulations - I am sooo excited hoorah hoorah hoorah another one of us!!

florenceuk · 05/03/2004 14:34

Actually I've been been feeling sick for about a week although I have a feeling the vomiting is getting worse maybe because I haven't been eating very often - have yet to see the doctor as haven't had the energy to make the appointment...I am carrying round two plastic bags stuffed into my pockets as train and tube travel make me feel so ill.

Congrats by the way to all newly pregnant, my posting rate has dropped way down since I realised that scrolling the screen up and down made me feel even worse than before. I think I'm due around the end of October - so it is early days yet.

I'm 9 weeks pg and have felt sick as a dog since week 5. I have nausea from about 9.30 in the morning until I go to bed at night. I retch a lot but don't usually bring anything up and have had to get out of meetings pdq on at least 4 occasions before I start retching in front of my clients. My midwife tells me that this is a very good sign (along with the constant heartburn). Hmmm, roll on the second trimester

dinny · 05/03/2004 19:53

Florenceuk, I've been really sick this pcy too. 7-8 times a day at worst, then 3-4 times a day. Started at 6 weeks and I am NEARLY through my first puke-free day at 14 weeks (PLEASE GOD!!!!)

I wore those travel wristbands - unsure if they did anything though. Fizzy drinks were the only thing the helped me - oh, and orange juice ice lollies. To make you feel better, I was told sickness makes the placenta grow big and strong in response to lack of nutrients! Hope you feel better soon.

stace · 06/03/2004 06:46

oh big sympathies for all us sickies, im on my second pregnancy and still sick at 17 weeks fortunately it has mostly calmed down from 6-7 times a day to mornings and maybe twice more in the day if i am unlikey. Arrow root is supposed to be good( but i admit i havent tried it, but i think i've tried almost everything else) Definetly keeping eating snacks reduces it alot. im currently trying acupuncture and ill keep you posted!!!

zebra · 06/03/2004 07:02

Pollingford: what did they prescribe you? Very curious, as I never heard of anything being prescribed (in Britain) unless you were bad enough to end up in hospital, and even then the consultants are reluctant... My GP and midwife just trotted out platitudes "It should finish by 13 weeks" HHHHAAAA! Let's try 17-20 weeks, shall we, folks? "Have some dioralyte if you can't keep anything else down" well, at least it tastes nice coming back up. Most of the other treatments mentioned here actually made me feel worse.

Cutting out saturated fats and hefty doses of Vitamin B6 were the only things that worked (for me).

I was prescribed a travel sickness drug called Avomine which is available over counter, but check with GP before taking anything! But I did have hyperemesis and puked up to 14 times a day even with the tablets. Hospitalised at 9 weeks, stopped puking by 17 weeks as long as I took the tablets - every time I tried to stop taking, puking started again. Eventually took them right up until the birth. Never thought I'd feel well again - but haven't been sick since! (DD now 18 months)

dinny · 06/03/2004 20:34

Ha ha, Harman - just trying to imagine a tape stopping the ferocious puking!!!!

Reckon my teeth are going to have rotted from puking then 10 mins later drinking full-fat lemonade! I found that cherryade seemed to help! Wouldn't touch it usually!

You're all going to hate me but I'm nearly through 2nd sick-free day (though have felt sick quite abit - can cope with that)! Hope it lifts for everyone on this thread soon!

Hmmmmm.... Thanks for that, Harman! Are you going to try it?

I have spoken too soon about sickness going - am feeling like I may be sick any moment. Bleurgh.

misdee · 06/03/2004 21:42

sip ginger ale. worked a treat on me most of the time, and i was sick throughtout both pregnancies, weighed less than b4 i was pregnant, my jeans were falling down after giving birth.

SofiaAmes · 07/03/2004 10:01

I had terrible sickness for the first 4 months of both my pregnancies. The best part about puking is that you feel good for 10 minutes afterwards. I found that eating a little all the time seemed to help. Munch on crackers, ginger cookies. Don't drink anything acidic like oj, lemonade, tea or eat anything that will irritate your stomach (spicy or fatty food). They do these crackers in the us called Saltines that are de rigeur for morning sickness. I had my aunt bring some over. I think I've since seen them in some of the Oriental food markets here (people from hong kong like them).
And most of all, just go with the puking. If you feel like being sick, let yourself throw up. It's not like having a stomach flu. My dh used to laugh at me...I would run upstairs in the middle of dinner to puke and then come back down and eat a whole other dinner. (it was a bit expensive to do in restaurants, so we didn't eat out too much). good luck. In both pregnancies my sickness went overnight just around 16 weeks.

sibble · 07/03/2004 19:32

I am 17 weeks and was still feeling/being sick until a few days ago. A friend recommended B6 early on in the pregnancy but I din't try as was bleeding and didn't want to do anything but started multivits for pregnancy with hefty B6 dose 2 days before sickness stopped. Maybe discuss with your midwife/DR worked for me and my friend. Other than that the usual, eat as soon as nausea starts, small and often, I ate every 1/2-1 hour any longer without food and I was sick. Find what you can keep down and stick to it, for me it was toast and lemon squash.
Personally I think it is the worst thing in the world and I definately won't be having any more children becasue of the sickness alone, twice is enough, at least with a hangover you know you are going to feel better the next day but with pregnancy.... eurghhhhhh

scruff · 19/03/2004 12:38

Has anyone experienced that some days the sickness is worse than others. I am nearly 10 wks preg and was seeing a light at the end of the tunnel but very sick again today. I think the wind in my stomach is the worse but eating is very difficult!!!!

beansprout · 19/03/2004 12:49

Thank you for letting me know I am not alone. Am at work and just feel awful. Have felt sick 24/7 for the last 6 weeks and at 11 weeks today, may have a bit more of it yet. As happy as I am to be pg, this is really getting me down.

Am trying to eat little and often and am convinced my colleague is sitting there thinking " well, no wonder she is putting on weight, she doesn't stop eating!!"

dinny · 19/03/2004 13:02

Hi everyone, I'm 16 weeks and still feeling sick in the evenings. OK in the day now buit it was awful - it's so draining and depressing to fel constantly sick. At worst, I was being sick 7-8 times a day. Nothing really helped me except orange juice ice lollies.

Sibble, you're my inspiration - hope mine stops next week!

beansprout · 19/03/2004 13:11

Is this the worst bit of the first, say, 7 or 8 months? I appreciate there is a really tricky bit at the end, plus hugeness of bump etc can be difficult. A friend told me that this is the worst time - or was she just being nice?!!

florenceuk · 19/03/2004 14:26

well, I'm still sick - although it varies. Some days I throw up 5-6 times, some days only 3 times, depending on whether I've managed to eat consistently enough. Always throw up in the evening around 7pm, which makes for a good bathtime for DS! Have been taking Vitamin B6 but not sure if it makes a difference. Find it hard to eat, I force down biscuits and crackers but they sometimes refuse to go down. Also DS wants what I am eating, and so I don't eat so well when I am looking after him as I don't want him eating a biscuit every half hour! Very little seems appealing in terms of food, I struggle to find something to eat. Have not been able to face normal food for weeks now. Actually found that Cup-a-soups and instant noodles are edible, but also make me thirsty and leave a strange taste in my mouth. I've lost half a stone since being pregnant! Have also abandoned any multivits as can't face swallowing them (or the cup of water to go with them) but have kept taking folic acid.

Plus I hate work/commuting. I always throw up on the tube trip into work - I stagger off, go through the gates and then retch into a plastic bag. Luckily this is London so everyone ignores me! Have been incredibly tired as well, I literally fall asleep at my desk staring at papers and have to go off and sit in the loo until I wake up. And yes I think this is definitely the low point of being pregnant - at least with labour you know it will end! Never again I reckon.
