9 weeks and unable to eat very much food at all except complete junk food since BFP

jollyjellybean · 02/01/2014 15:38

I'm 9 weeks today and since getting my BFP Ive pretty much had constant nauseau and am off all food - before my BFP I ate extremely healthily and a very balanced diet with lots of meat, fish, fruit and veg but since getting pg I have struggled so much with all food which Ive found very unappealing

Ive only eaten small amounts which is all I can stomach because I know I can't not eat and am so very worried that Im not getting any nutrients to the baby. The only small amounts of food that I can tolerate are complete rubbish like crisps, chocolate or white toast (which I haven't eaten since a child) with lots of butter

Im very concerned at the limited rubbish diet I am eating and wondered if anyone else was suffering the same as this or if there was anything I could do?

I currently can't even go to the food shops (something I used to love) as the nausea is making me feel ever more sick being surrounded by so much food

Any advice gratefully received

You'll probably feel much better in 3 weeks or so and begin to eat more normally. Are you taking a multi-vitamin?

Pascha · 02/01/2014 15:42

Its the carbs. Your body craves the carbs. All that baby-building is hard work for it. Its normal. Best thing you can do is embrace it, eat the junk, hold off the nausea as best you can and don't worry. It generally passes around week 14-16.

EeyoreIsh · 02/01/2014 15:48

I was like that, took ages before I could eat anything vaguely healthy. I lived on toast and peanut butter.

The midwife said it was fine. Just to eat what I could manage. The baby will be just fine, it'll be you that is deprived of vitamins etc as baby takes what it needs first. So worth taking a good multivitamin. If you can't stomach one, try taking it at a different time of day.

jollyjellybean · 02/01/2014 16:03

thanks so much for all your replies
Im taking mum to be multivitamin - normally Im fine with taking pills but with the nausea am struggling to take this but really trying to as this seems to be the only goodness I am getting as the crisps and white toast and butter is just rubbish

Im so hoping that my normal appetite will return soon as I normally love my food and am so good with eating healthily but now feel like running to the hills rather than eat pretty much all food

thanks so much for all your advice

I know exactly how you feel, I felt the same way and had the same worries. Don't feel guilty, if you force yourself to eat things you can't stomach you'll just feel worse or be sick which means no calories at all.

Mine went away at 10.5 weeks which was a godsend as I didn't know how I was going to cope any longer.

Good luck :)

EeyoreIsh · 02/01/2014 16:19

I remember that feeling so well. I used to eat 8 portions of fruit and veg a day, lots of fish, stir fries, soups and salad.

Your appetite will return, for me it took ages, but at 35 weeks mine is almost back to normal.

jollyjellybean · 02/01/2014 16:20

thanks angelina - such a relief to hear that it does get better - Im not sure I can survive much longer on eating very little and only rubbish at that - the midwife weighed me and I lost 11 lbs which I was very worried about

Im really hoping that my aversion to all food will disappear too very shortly
I normally LOVE my food so much and its so upsetting when I want to eat for the baby and just can't stomach anything

Such a relief to hear from you all that it is normal and that hopefully it will get better
thanks for all your replies

thanks eeyoreIsh - yes I was so super healthy before and would no more eat which bread than jump off a roof so its just so upsetting that I can't tolerate anything remotely healthy or good for me
pleased that your appetite is returning

On the positive side Im hoping that it is a good sign for the pg - having sadly had mcs before previously I didn't have this complete aversion to food so I trying to take this as a positive sign

Don't panic about it. I was exactly the same. Couldn't eat anything but pasta and cheese sandwiches. Totally went off fruit and veg and have always loved them! Some days all I had was biscuits and lucozade. I was like that until about week 13 and now all is well and I'm eating more healthily again. It's weird that at the time you'd expect your body to crave healthy stuff it does the opposite, but I can totally see why it craves carbs too- you are using so much energy. xxx

jollyjellybean · 02/01/2014 16:36

thanks so much weebigmamma - so reassuring to hear that its normal
yes I so agree with you - I would have thought that my body would crave veg and fruit and all things healthy for the baby and its been the opposite and my once normal healthy and large! appetite has diminished to hardly anything

so pleased to hear it does get better and really hope it will be ok for the baby

I was just like that! Thing I never ate because I couldn't get enough of! But now I'm 12 weeks I'm back to eating normally again. I'm sure it will pass for you too

MrsPatMustard · 02/01/2014 16:48

I lived off crumpets and McCoys crisps at that stage. Anything else sent me running to the bathroom. For most women it eases up in the second trimester, just eat what you can stomach and hang on in there.

Plateofcrumbs · 02/01/2014 16:59

Don't worry - I've yet to hear of a woman who has maintained a brilliant diet through the first trimester!

snowtunesgirl · 02/01/2014 17:02

OP, hang on in there. This stage really is the pits especially if you were a healthy foodie before.

I could only really eat white foods like pasta, bread, crisps but was soon back to normal by Week 12. Then in my second trimester, all I wanted to eat was bagfuls of cherries!

jollyjellybean · 02/01/2014 17:25

thanks everyone

its very reassuring

I hope I will get to the cherries stage - some vit c for the baby at least :)

Im also struggling with drinking enough fluids - pre BFP I drank alot of water and tea and now Im struggling with finding anything I want to drink
I have to really force a bit of water down but am really finding it as unappealing as the food

Did anyone else have this and does this improve with time????

Slightly concerned as Ive read I need to have something like 8 pints of water a day but tbh I struggle with half a pint of still water a day and sometimes not even that :(

stargirl1701 · 02/01/2014 17:29

I couldn't drink water with DD in the first trimester. I swapped to weak Ribena squash. Water just tasted foul which I found odd as I normally only drink water. It passed though.

YankNCock · 02/01/2014 17:31

I was like this with DS1, only wanted flat Coke, white bread, crisps, and anything with fake orange cheese on it/in it. I had to raid the USA food section at Selfridges for mac and cheese, and was eating the cheese powder out of the packet just after we left the shop.

Thankfully DS1 didn't come out orange or anything....

chocolocodowninacapulco · 02/01/2014 17:35

Sorry to hear you are struggling jellybean, if it's any consolation I have been feeling the same and am 7 weeks. I too can't face any drinks and have to force water down and have lost 8lb. It might be worth you looking at the hyperemesis support thread. I was feeling so bad that I went to my gp 10 days ago and got some medication, but have resisted taking them so far- d'oh. She also prescribed me some homeopathic tablets, ipecacuanha which I think help slightly.

jollyjellybean · 02/01/2014 17:39

he he - that's very funny yank - now that you've mentioned fake orange cheese that sounds quite nice - Ive asked the DH to get junk food tonight which hes not happy about but its all I can stomach
tinned sausages with some orange cheese is on the menu tonight - never thought in a million years I would be find that appetising! :)

so pleased to hear that others couldn't drink water too as I thought I must be the only one - I will try weak ribena - very good advice

very much hoping that my peculiar aversion to all food and liquids will disappear soon - water is just the most unappealing drink ever at the moment
its so strange when prior to this I was drinking gallons of water and couldnt get enough fruit and veg - lets hope its passes quickly

jollyjellybean · 02/01/2014 17:43

thanks chocoloco - Im so sorry to hear that you're suffering with this too at the moment
sympathies to you all as its just awful

I did mention it to my midwife and she said as long as Im eating something then a jam dohnut is better than no food and she didn't seem too alarmed - didn't mention to her about my aversion to all liquid drinks tho so will mention this to her next time

I have heard about the sea sickness bands so may give these a try
really hope it improves quickly for us all

8 pints a day? Shock Don't think I could have physically drank that much. I ended up sipping cold milk while eating water crackers to hold the nausea down.

sharkey1187 · 02/01/2014 18:35

Hi Jolly,

sorry to hear you feel so rubbish. I'm 8 weeks and for the last 5 days I've been a mess. I had nausea earlier on but on Boxing day it went downhill. my diet consists of crisps and lemonade. Although last night I was chuffed with myself and managed a bowl of plain pasta. Tonight just the thought of it is turning my stomach. GP said eat what you can but if it's a choice between eating or drinking, go for the fluids.

what I'm most upset about at the moment though is all the chocolate that has gone untouched from Christmas and I can't even look at it......

beckylouise91 · 02/01/2014 18:53

Since the 12 week point I got better eating more substantial meals with plenty of meat and vegetables but up until that point I was picking at the more unhealthy variety. I still have days now where I go back to the eating habits of my first trimester it's completely normal and nothing to feel guilty about!! I'm now on iron tablets but don't blame that on my diet during early pregnancy as my mum and most women in my family had to take the iron tablets!! Xxx

Curioushorse · 02/01/2014 18:56

Yes, hilarious, usn't it? I was going to beso good. all organic food, fish for brain development etc. I ate only jaffa cakes for a fortnigjt.

Meglet · 02/01/2014 19:43

My DC's were partly grown on macdonalds breakfasts and lemonade. Those first few weeks are hard work.

Later in the pregnancies I craved greek salad and special k red berries.
