9 weeks and unable to eat very much food at all except complete junk food since BFP

I'm 9 weeks today and since getting my BFP Ive pretty much had constant nauseau and am off all food - before my BFP I ate extremely healthily and a very balanced diet with lots of meat, fish, fruit and veg but since getting pg I have struggled so much with all food which Ive found very unappealing

Ive only eaten small amounts which is all I can stomach because I know I can't not eat and am so very worried that Im not getting any nutrients to the baby. The only small amounts of food that I can tolerate are complete rubbish like crisps, chocolate or white toast (which I haven't eaten since a child) with lots of butter

Im very concerned at the limited rubbish diet I am eating and wondered if anyone else was suffering the same as this or if there was anything I could do?

I currently can't even go to the food shops (something I used to love) as the nausea is making me feel ever more sick being surrounded by so much food

Any advice gratefully received

Don't worry! I had v. severe hyperemesis and threw up for the entire pregnancy. I didn't eat normally at any point, and for the first few months I didn't eat at all and was in and out of hospital because I couldn't retain any fluid either so had to be on a drip. In the end they put me on food replacement drinks as I was losing so much weight. Obviously this is an extreme example but the amazing thing is that DS was fine. Because I was so ill I had loads and loads of scans to check on him every couple of weeks and every time he was absolutely fine - dead on the right size and very lively. It really is true that the baby takes what it needs from your reserves - I ran out of absolutely everything, every time they did a blood test they told me what else I was horribly deficient in, but when he was born he was amazingly healthy and lively and they actually commented on what a good big placenta I had.

thanks so much for all your replies

so sorry to hear you had such a tough time kalidasa - poor you - that sounds tough

its reassuring to hear that it all turned out really well after such an incredibly tough time

Ive been so worried these last few weeks due to my appalling eating or lack of it so its reassuring to hear that the baby is not relying on fruit and veg or any decent food which at this stage is unpalatable for me

thanks to you all for your reassuring messages - much appreciated

Judt to say I'm exactly rhe same and not much improved at 13 weeks

icklekid · 03/01/2014 07:52

Sorry about all the spelling errors posted too soon :-( some days are better than others, I just try and listen to my body and eat what I can.

CitrusyOne · 03/01/2014 08:00

I was exactly the same, and it turned out that at different stages of the pregnancy I craved different things. For the first 14 weeks it was whatever my body fancied at the time- junk food, pie and chips, cheddars, anything. When the nausea went away I found that I did fancy fruit and veg more than I normally would. I also had stages where I wanted milk and cheese- both things that I don't have much of usually.

As for drinks, I went on the flavoured fizzy waters that the supermarkets sell, and caffeine free diet coke. Went on tea in a big way early on, but off it in an even bigger way as the pregnancy progressed.

I would say trust your body and feed it what you fancy and what your body can stomach. Good luck, and hope you feel a bit better soon!

I'm about 9 weeks and am in the same boat as the OP. It is making me feel really really miserable especially because I haven't told anyone except my partner. It helps to know that others are experiencing the same though.

jollyjellybean · 03/01/2014 11:10

thanks all
yes Im hoping that I will start to crave something soon as Im worried that all food turns my tummy at the moment
things that I liked for a day I have now gone off :(
my list of food is diminishing fast

Im definitely just going with whatever I think I can eat - as that's better than nothing surely
am hoping that it improves as I really don't want to loose any more weight

the DH will have to do his meals from now on which won't go down well!
good advice re the fizzy drinks - I will definitely try this

I really struggled with sickness and my midwife reiterated (several times) that you should just eat what you can, when you can - even if it's 'unhealthy foods'. Try and keep your fluid levels up too. I couldn't swallow multivitamins so midwife suggested soft chewable ones, even kids ones if needs be, at least some vitamins are getting in that way! Baby will take what it needs from you and be fine but it might leave you feeling rotten. Hope you feel better soon x

I was really nauseous for weeks but feeling much better at 13 weeks. I found sparkling water and peppermint tea (sometimes) ok. Also mainly ok sticking to white bread, bagels etc
Hope it disappears soon.

I am only 7 weeks and have felt constantly sick for a week now. I am also constantly hungry as can only manage small amounts at a time. I'm living off toast, biscuits and bananas. Also feeling exhausted. I have been off work over Christmas and New Year and barely coping so have no idea how I'm going to go back to work on Monday feeling like this. It is reassuring to know others have experienced the same thing and that it is normal as it's quite worrying and as only my husband knows I'm pregnant I can't even talk to friends about it. My doctor said if it persists she can prescribe something. Has anyone else gone down that route? It's very tempting right now! Hope you all feel better sooner rather than later.
