Damn it, I have created a monster! I bought DP a pregnancy book for dads and am now subjected to daily lectures advice.
Having finally convinced him that the cats were not hatching a murderous plan for the new arrival, today's panic is about smoked salmon.
He came rushing down the stairs "you shouldn't be eating smoked salmon! or ham!". I said "oh really, i didn't know that. Anyway I don't think I have done so it's ok." . Him "Yes you have! At my mum's!". Me "oh well, it was only a slice, i'm sure it's fine". He skulked off, I don't think he is convinced and is probably googling worst case scenarios.
Is smoked salmon such a hazardous substance? Should i kick the book under the bed hoping it stays lost? In fairness it does have some advantages as I haven't had to change litter tray in months. Actually scrap that I am def kicking it under bed as he is now shouting from upstairs about the evils of homemade mayo (we have never made homemade mayo).

How much liver do you have to eat to cause problems? I ate some at about 5 weeks pregnant before I knew. All I can find is that it should be avoided but not any more detail.

The liver pate ban is about listeriosis risk and vitamin a.

You obviously didn't get listeriosis.

On the high vitamin A in liver, high levels of vitamin A can cause birth defects BUT a single serving will be fine. in fact, some countries consider liver pate to have accepable levels for general eating during pregnancy and only advise to steer clear of liver itself.

In summary, you are fine but best to avoid liver from now on.Smile

Ok, thanks! It wasn't pate it was just liver. It was revolting but served by my grandfather so I ate it anyway. I would be less annoyed with myself if it had been pâté which I actually like!

I follow the same principle as penguins - I think about my diet in the round rather than get hung up too much on individual items.

A pregnant colleague has taken to eating at the canteen salad bar every day as it is "healthy" but was in a panic about some cheese at our Xmas party. I didn't hav the heart to tell her I'd be much more worried about her salad bar habit.

I have got much more fastidious about food hygiene since pregnancy and am cutting down on pre-prepared salads etc (although not obsessively).

Antoinette I ate chopped liver several times in my first tri - all fine at 20 week scan! Didn't women used to get told to eat it to ward off anaemia?

I've been wondering - if the risks from liver are for defects, does that mean once baby is formed it becomes safer to eat again?

Sorry, misread you Antionette. Either way you will be absolutely fine. Just a good excuse to turn it down in future Wink
