As title suggests really. Am 5 weeks pregnant (wasn't planned but we're happy). But am die to go snowboarding on Sunday.
has anyone had any experience of boarding in the early stages of pregnancy?
Am going with a huge group, so if I go and don't board, how do I go a whole week without telling anyone my secret?

I found out yesterday I am pregnant (almost 4 weeks) and I am feeling so sleepy it's like somebody's drugged me lol. I would go and treat this as a trip to visit a foreign country: nice hot chocolate in the cold weather, visit the neighbouring villages, have some relaxing lie-ins, eat mountain hearty food and take a look at the local "culture". Then again that's me :)
Congrats though!!!!

kmini · 27/12/2013 10:07

I feel the same hubby. I'm at work today & I am feeling very dappy! Not good with my line of work, mistakes cost me money!

kmini · 27/12/2013 10:07

Oh congrats to you both - Izzy and Hubby

Hubbythecatandme · 27/12/2013 10:41

Oh no kmini!!!
I work from home (I have an online business) and I have to say I am doing the bare minimum this morning: dispatching orders, answering customers. Bookeeping and stock taking will have to wait until I stop feeling like I am on heavy tranquilizers!
It is great though, I wondered if I would freak out finding out I am pregnant, turns out I am too sleepy to worry!!!!

StrawberryMojito · 27/12/2013 10:54

It made me feel uncomfortable and a bit sick writing it tbh but it's true. Of course there is a risk, and that is what it comes down to.

kmini · 27/12/2013 11:26

Sorry strawberry don't really understand what you are saying? Why do you feel umcomfortable and a bit sick writing it?

Alb1 · 27/12/2013 13:11

I'm also 5 weeks pregnant and also going snowboarding on Sunday, I'm a complete novice and so I won't be doing any snowboarding or skiing, my doc said it shud be ok but iv mc before and so can't bring myself to risk it with this one. Il jus be relaxing in cafés with hot chocolate and laughing at other beginners falling over :-)

kmini · 27/12/2013 14:37

If you are a complete beginner alba i think that is very wise.

sleeplessbunny · 27/12/2013 14:44

It has to be whatever you feel comfortable with. Personally, I would go, and I did ski at 10wks during my first pregnancy. I had a great time, but I did have to pace myself as I was more tired than usual. I saw it as my last opportunity to ski for a few years, now no.2 is on the way it could be even longer! Not cheap to take kids skiing.

sleeplessbunny · 27/12/2013 14:50

I tripped and slid down the stairs last week (26wks) Shock. I'm fine, btw, but I did scream and burst into tears with the shock of it. That was worse than any of my many skiing mishaps, just to put it in perspective. But it has to be something you are comfortable with yourself.

Izzy82 · 27/12/2013 21:11

Thank you to everyone who replied. I've been weighing it all up and I think I'm going to go on the holiday and enjoy the hot chocolate! It's too late to back out and my husband will enjoy the trip.

I'm going skiing next Sunday and will be 7 weeks. I'm a reasonably accomplished skier so will just pace myself and not do anything stupid! I wouldn't go snowboarding though. I gave myself concussion on the single afternoon that I tried it!

kiki88 · 28/12/2013 11:52

where are all the pregnant mammas going to? We're for morzine on the 4th for a week. will be a lot of patisseries hit and wifi cafes :) you can also go up the mountain on foot, they slow the chair lift down for you to get on and off. im planning on meeting some of the group some days for lunch as you can bus it round to avoriaz and take the big walk in bubble lift up to the bars/restaurants I've been told

Tiredemma · 28/12/2013 11:55

kiki88

Im very Envy

Morzine is my fave place for skiing.

kiki88 · 28/12/2013 12:28

I've been last year. this year though there will be no snowboarding as im still not very confident at staying on my feet and dont wana take any risks falling

kmini · 29/12/2013 12:42

We're in la clusaz. It's lovely highly recommend. Not crazy busy like a lot of the resorts I've been too.

My update so far....dog tired, muscle much sorer than normal, knees quite swollen. I skied most of yesterday & I was fine. Tired, sore and more so than usual, but fine. Skied this morning, lots of flat almost cross country runs.It was so so difficult and everything ached.

If you are going to ski or board, then a) plan yr routes carefully b) blue greens & reds that have nice moderate inclines c) take afternoon off.

Charotte31 · 29/12/2013 19:01

I wouldn't risk it. It's a no brainer isn't it?

WhatWillSantaBring · 29/12/2013 20:33

I know I'm posting too late to be of help to the op! but thought I'd chip in with my thoughts. I went when I was 7 weeks because I was satisfied that skiing represented almost no increase to the risk of miscarriage, and I was more likely to suffer an injury serious enough to mc in the car on the way to the airport than on the slopes.

Having said that, I skied like a tit all week, and was exhausted, so didn't enjoy it as much as normal.

I also lost that baby but it never occurred to me that skiing could have been a reason me because I knew that wasn't 100% definitely not the cause- if you are not of that mindset (ie totally accepting of the fact that you can miscarry no matter how careful you are, and would not blame yourself if you did) then I definitely wouldn't go, as the guilt might eat you up.

For the PP who said it depended how much you wanted the baby, that's bollocks. Utter bollocks. A mc in any circumstances is devastating, though despite your clear insensitivity, I hope to god you never get to learn that.

kmini · 29/12/2013 20:37

Well said whatwillsantabring

Julietee · 29/12/2013 20:52

I guess one of the main questions is whether possibly repeated impacts to your bum or hips could damage your pregnancy. I have no clue - you'd almost certainly have to ask a doctor. Don't take internet strangers' words for it, you need a proper answer!

oscarwilde · 29/12/2013 22:48

Excuses.
My top tip is to say / inply that we're trying to get pregnant and the doctor has recommended it. People usually back the f*ck off immediately as it implies that it's not happening for you both. They also assume its a sensitive subject and give the whole thing a wide berthGrin

Freckletoes · 03/01/2014 11:43

Can't advise whether to go or not but what I would say-don't go if you're not going to board/ski. We went nearly 3 weeks back and I injured my knees on day one. Stayed out so the family could get their holiday but yea gods I was bored out of my mind!! I guess I was limited with what I could do but I wouldn't recommend it!!

longleggedlady · 03/01/2014 13:59

What natwebb said :(

ChicaMomma · 03/01/2014 14:06

I wouldn't- for the same reasons as natwebb. I'm a good skiier so wouldnt be worried about falling, i'd be more worried about some other person crashing into me- which lets face it does happen. Or falling in the town, or on foot on the slopes- this has probably happened to me more often that falling whiel skiing!

I'd stil go though- and just chill out by day. You coudl tell people you'd done in your cruciate ligament or something. hacent read the full thread, but is it a big gang of you going- or just you and OH?

i've just spotted youre a first timer!!!!!!!!!!!! ok, you're actually crazy. You will fall HOURLY.

Jenbee1 · 04/01/2014 20:18

I'm not sure if this will help or not. we just got back from Iceland, not skiing, but I was so scared I would fall on the ice and hurt myself or the little bean. Saw quite a few people falling, be careful whatever you decide xx
