Soft cheese and mulled wine (light hearted)

Light hearted post as obviously there's already the "what can & can't eat" and "wine people will or won't drink at Christmas" posts floating around. What are YOU missing?

Friday afternoon 5pm, packed supermarket with my lovely trolley pusher (DH) in tow. Cheese aisle.

Stilton on offer. DH notices back of packets saying not suitable for expectant Mum's but let's me buy it as we both "know better" as NHS have recently changed their Stilton guidance.

Then I hit the Brie, not literally obvs but oh those yummy gooey packets if squishy soft cheese. All mainly saying made from pasteurised milk. No warming labels here about I suitability for preggos!

So why can't I have it? Hubby says its cos of the way it's made. Yes starts with pasteurised milk but then introduce bacteria to make it mature. He does know his stuff, he's an ex dairy farmer with a degree in agriculture and knows loads about milk& cheese obvs. Argh!

I'm not sure if I'd even be that excited about Brie usually. Just the not having it is making me sad!! And want it more!!

As for mulled wine. I usually spend December drinking it at any opportunity. I love the smell. I'm missing it and might buy an instant bottle to save for May post baby's arrival.

Has anyone found a good alternative? The bottle green mulled cordial was too clovey. I'm currently contemplating mixing ribena and a apple juice with mulled wine spices, just to see.

Anyway, what is Christmas making you miss?

pate Angry

Thisisfreakingmeout · 21/12/2013 08:43

Proper home ground thick strong coffee.

I know I am allowed some caffeine but this stuff makes my heart zip so it feels wrong and takes the joy out.

Non-rubbery eggs. Again I know people say the lion mark means it's fine but I think I'll just wait 6 weeks then have my fill of it!

Eminybob · 21/12/2013 09:07

Wine, Brie, pate, smoked salmon, baileys, cosmopolitans (a Xmas tradition in the eminybob household)

Although on another thread it was said that I can eat my Brie if I bake it until it's bubbling. So I feel better and will be doing that Smile

ClearlyMoo · 21/12/2013 09:23

Ohhhh Baileys. Why did I start this thread?!

I feel your pain ladies!

Eminy the nhs site says you can eat smoked salmon- don't think I've ever been so excited in my life!

ZingChoirsOfAngels · 21/12/2013 09:29

you can have smoked salmon

you can have soft cheeses like Brie and Camambert as long as it is cooked through (as it kills the harmful bacteria) - just bake it whole in the oven and eat is as fondue.
absolutely delicious!Smile

you can have a little mulled wine as some of the alcohol is "burned" off so no reason why you couldn't have a small glass!

nomoreminibreaks · 21/12/2013 09:30

I caved and had a baileys the other night after not a single drop since BFP in May. It was amazing.

M&S have a non-alcoholic mulled punch I think? I picked some up but haven't tried it yet.

This is DC2 so I'm taking a much more relaxed attitude to what I eat this time. Planning on a runny egg for breakfast...

Poshnosh · 21/12/2013 09:31

I just want chocolate, one tiny tiny tiny chocolate will do!! But I have GD so it's a no no. 2 weeks to go :)

HomeIsWhereTheGinIs · 21/12/2013 09:35

Am experimenting withmulled apple juice. Smells the same as mulled cider, and you can have more than a thimble!

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 21/12/2013 10:31

Jäger bombs Sad

Eminybob · 21/12/2013 10:32

Really I can have smoked salmon? Oh it just gets better. Thank you Smile

HoHoHopelessAtNamingBabies · 21/12/2013 10:39

Pate - I would touch a tiny bit of most things but absolutely no pate/liver due to vitamin A thing.

Smoked salmon is fine! I'm also eating runny eggs when red lion stamped.

Great alternative to mulled wine is Bottle Green's Spiced Berry cordial. (DH also recommends it with a slug of brandy!).

Charingcrossbun · 21/12/2013 10:41

It was my birthday yesterday and DP took me out to dinner. I had rarish steak and a small glass of red! Heaven!!!
Missing pâté but will be making up for it with smoked salmon....! Grin

HoHoHopelessAtNamingBabies · 21/12/2013 10:42

Oh and agree re. a really strong home brewed coffee. DH has a cafetiere on the go right now with what looked like half a packet of ground beans Xmas Envy

CrispyFB · 21/12/2013 12:40

Yeah, I thought that was weird - warning on the back of Stilton (which is fine to have, in fact I think it's been fine to have for years but nobody spotted it before!) yet not always on the back of some of the soft Brie/Camembert cheeses. I've had midwives tell me that pasteurised soft cheeses are fine but the NHS website says no and logic says no as well for the reasons you DH mentioned. That's why I bake 'em!!

Things I am not going without (personal choice based on research, folks!):

Smoked Salmon
Runny Eggs (shop bought with lionmark)
Stilton
Camembert, just baked instead
Very Small glass of Port
A small coffee
Chocolate (thankfully no GD!!)

Things I am going without:

Pate - there's no getting around that one with research and/or careful preparation/portion sizes

All things considered it's nowhere near as dire as it could be though!

poopooheadwillyfatface · 21/12/2013 12:44

Pate is the listeria risk though really. One or two meals with pate is not going to cause a massive vitamin A overload.

HaleyDunphy · 21/12/2013 12:44

Prawn cocktail on a bed of fresh lettuce Sad

Mouth is watering

sammyad · 21/12/2013 14:06

I'm making dishwasher vodka for sister and sister-in-law.
Just. Want. One. Little. Taste!

HumptyDumptyBumpty · 21/12/2013 14:09

haley you can have prawn cocktail, as long as you a) are sure the prawns are fresh and b) don't have raw-egg mayo on them.

HaleyDunphy · 21/12/2013 14:13

humpty you have made my day!

Doodle1983 · 21/12/2013 15:53

Brie and Camembert. I'm not sure I'd dare rush baking the Camembert either... Agh but I want it SO BAD !!

Doodle1983 · 21/12/2013 15:53

Risk ^

Doodle1983 · 21/12/2013 15:54

And poached eggs

Beccadugs · 21/12/2013 16:32

I am not avoiding things that are to do with listeria/good poisoning risks as long as I know the source of the food, as my personal choice is that the risk of getting food poisoning is low. (I also had hyperemersis for 24 weeks and baby survived that level of puking!!)

Shellywelly1973 · 21/12/2013 16:41

I forget who strange my eating habits are but it means I don't feel like im missing out on anything when im pregnant.

I don't eat any of the usual Christmas stuff, cheeses, pate, salmon, prawns or eggs. I don't drink coffee & rarely drink alcohol.

I have to admit I've never even tasted any of the above!
