Soft cheese and mulled wine (light hearted)

Light hearted post as obviously there's already the "what can & can't eat" and "wine people will or won't drink at Christmas" posts floating around. What are YOU missing?

Friday afternoon 5pm, packed supermarket with my lovely trolley pusher (DH) in tow. Cheese aisle.

Stilton on offer. DH notices back of packets saying not suitable for expectant Mum's but let's me buy it as we both "know better" as NHS have recently changed their Stilton guidance.

Then I hit the Brie, not literally obvs but oh those yummy gooey packets if squishy soft cheese. All mainly saying made from pasteurised milk. No warming labels here about I suitability for preggos!

So why can't I have it? Hubby says its cos of the way it's made. Yes starts with pasteurised milk but then introduce bacteria to make it mature. He does know his stuff, he's an ex dairy farmer with a degree in agriculture and knows loads about milk& cheese obvs. Argh!

I'm not sure if I'd even be that excited about Brie usually. Just the not having it is making me sad!! And want it more!!

As for mulled wine. I usually spend December drinking it at any opportunity. I love the smell. I'm missing it and might buy an instant bottle to save for May post baby's arrival.

Has anyone found a good alternative? The bottle green mulled cordial was too clovey. I'm currently contemplating mixing ribena and a apple juice with mulled wine spices, just to see.

Anyway, what is Christmas making you miss?

PATE PATE PATE! God what I wouldnt do for a packet of brussels and a french stick right now!

Oh and a pack of nurofen. I hate paracetamol, does nothing for any pain ever have!

HalfPintPickle · 21/12/2013 17:02

Wine, pâté, Brie/ Camembert ( although I read you can eat it if its been cooked - is that true?!) oh, and a poached egg with a runny middle!

Mummytobe81 · 21/12/2013 17:03

Runny dippy boiled eggs and soldiers, Brie and this morning I was offered a baileys cappuccino at the hairdressers Sad

VJONES1985 · 21/12/2013 17:19

I adore Stilton and am soooo glad I'm allowed to eat it now.

Will deffo miss pate and a nice glass of vodka, lime and lemonade.

Plateofcrumbs · 21/12/2013 18:03

I figure seeing as you can get listeria from all types of things, limiting your exposure to non-banned-but-still-risky stuff entitles you to small amounts of the banned stuff. So if I cut out all bagged salad, I can eat a bit of Brie.

bebbeau · 21/12/2013 18:34

i'm really missing the stuff we are not allowed atm. think its because its christmas

a triple measure of baileys with LOADS of ice

champagne on xmas eve

generally getting pissed most evenings over christmas

brie and bacon baguettes

i am only 24+1 so AGES left :(

ZingChoirsOfAngels · 21/12/2013 18:51

about pate - I think if it is heated through it is just as safe as heated through brie as heat kills bacteria.
that's my logic anyway.

I know about the A vitamin thing, but if I eat 1 portion say once a month I can not see how that would affect baby, there's actually not that much liver in shop bought pate!

so I eat it by spreading some on bread then grill it for a minute or two, then add cheese and grill it more.
it's basically pate & cheese on toast.

I've eaten this a few times after the first trimester during all my pregnancies (6 so far) and nothing ever happened.

but of course I'm only saying that it's what I do, because I think it's safe.
I'm not saying anyone should do thr same.

ZingChoirsOfAngels · 21/12/2013 18:53

and FWIW right now I'd just like to eat anything at all and not be sick.

it's water and ice for me right now.
I don't think I will eat much until this horrible MS goes awaySad

MummyPig24 · 22/12/2013 08:12

I had some non alcoholic mulled wine on Friday and it was very sweet and I didn't like it. Don't know why I bothered as I don't really like regular mulled wine!

I'm not really missing anything. Barely drank before pregnancy. I guess I would like some pate but I'm not too bothered.

Misty9 · 22/12/2013 19:46

I wasn't missing alcohol, but now on a family Xmas get together and EVERYONE is drinking :( copella have brought out a winter warmer spiced apple juice which is lovely warm but then all the alcohol drinkers want it and there's hardly any left for me but I am going to have some mulled wine I think - the alcohol's burnt off isn't it? :)

I also miss Brie. But I definitely still eat runny eggs, couldn't not.

MrsVDB · 22/12/2013 20:04

Ikea sell a non alcoholic mulled wine which is pretty good :)

I'm eating cooked Camembert as cooking it kills the germs

I miss a really nice glass of Sancerre and a Malbec. Plan on having 1 on Christmas Day (will be 36w) and one on New Year's Eve. Been looking forward to it for months now

Inglori0us · 22/12/2013 22:52

Pate containing liver is high risk due to the damage Vit A can cause to unborn babies. Veggie and fish pate is only a listeria risk.

I'm having runny eggs and medium rare steak if I know it's good quality. I'm also having the occasional full caf latte.
Ikea (if you can face it) do a great alcohol free mulled wine.
I miss wine. I have a small glass every now avid then but it just makes me want another immediately so I'm not really enjoying it that much.

InTheBEEwitchedWinter · 22/12/2013 22:53

I've had tons of stilton - I am normally not even that fond of it but just knowing that I can have it makes me feel very happy!

Things I've been sneaking in:
hot bubbling camembert
half a cup of mulled wine at the Christmas market
Slightly runny yolked eggs (DH doesn't know how to cook eggs non-runny)
a bit of port in the cranberry sauce
home-made chicken liver pate - livers cooked all the way through (German health advice says liver is ok once a week out of 1st trimester)
Coffee about 2-3 times a week

Things I really miss:
Brie (cold)
Dolcelatte
Single-malt whisky (DH can't listen to me whinging about that one anymore)

We're going up to MiL's for Christmas - since I've become pregnant her fridge has mainly been full of brie, white wine and pate, it's like she is doing this deliberately to torture me!

moobaloo · 23/12/2013 10:19

I've avoided Pate

But have eaten cooked Brie (yum) and non alcoholic mulled wine (from IKEA and the local garden centre - both pretty good). And I ate prawn cocktail at a restaurant the other day.

I miss Baileys and PORT!

I had a glass of 4% alcohol pink bubbly and it was pretty naff tbh, not the sort of thing I would ever drink normally but I may have another glass on Xmas day to toast with!
