Has baby gone breech- how can I tell?

I'm Due dd2 in around 2 weeks so I'm 38 weeks atm.
I've been having horrible stabby pains really low and almost as if she's kicking the birth canal (well, that's what it feels like)

I'm concerned that she's breech as I never had this with dd1.

I've been a little over confident with this pregnancy and haven't been to doc or midwife since 20 week scan Blush as I've felt so well etc
Just wandering if there's a way of telling myself or if I need to book in with GP to get it checked out.

Why on earth haven't you been having antenatal checks? Do you know that many women who have eclampsia feel perfectly well?

Anyway, GP is unlikely to be able to tell. You'd be better off seeing a midwife.

EeyoreIsh · 03/12/2013 18:16

I think you should go to the midwife, best to know now if it's breech.

SaidTheSloth · 03/12/2013 18:19

Definitely contact your midwife first thing tomorrow.

My DS was breech and his head pushing up under my ribs was very uncomfortable.

MadBannersAndCopPorn · 03/12/2013 18:26

I know viva It's been so much harder to get myself organised with this one- I know there's no proper excuse for not going.

I'll have to see GP as midwife is flat out-Worried about eclampsia now......

Surely a midwife will fit you in if you haven't been seen for 18 weeks! You might have to see a community midwife rather than your normal one.

my mind is slightly boggling at the thought of going that long without seeing a midwife!

MadBannersAndCopPorn · 03/12/2013 18:36

Oh don't Eeyore I know... But the time has just run away with me and now baby's nearly here and I realise how long it's been...

I'll text her now and see if she can slip me in anywhere, if not docs in the morning, feel really silly now but I just felt fine and thought there's not much they do apart from listen to heartbeat and ask if you're ok...

Your midwife team probably has a drop in clinic you can go to tomorrow.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 03/12/2013 18:59

I've christened this stabby fanjo disorder! Wink It doesn't have to have anything to do with being kicked, probably more like muscle strain or your cervix warming up for labour.
You ABSOLUTELY MUST see a midwife though! Anything could be going on in there!

Shellywelly1973 · 03/12/2013 19:14

I think as any pregnant women knows ante natel care is important but you've actually only missed 3 appointments.

Hope everything works out ok.

Take care.

MadBannersAndCopPorn · 03/12/2013 19:26

Thank you Shelly I'm usually so on top of things but the weeks are falling each other they're going so quickly!

It's such a weird feeling saggy glad you know where I'm coming from, TBH it feels like the baby's arms and legs are kicking and punching me from all directions but the deep down stabby fanjo is so sudden and sharp, I've almost involuntarily shouted out.

I'm seeing the midwife Thursday- just sent her a desperate text and she's reassured me and my last appointment with her was 26 weeks, so not as bad as I'd thought...

Hi Mad. I've been having similar stabbing cervical pains - distinctly different from anything I had with DC1. Scan yesterday confirmed the baby is indeed breech. I'm 36 weeks and have been to all my appointments (which I think is only two since 20 week scan for second or subsequent babies) and have only just been diagnosed.

Shellywelly1973 · 03/12/2013 19:35

Im surprised they didn't contact you!

I know what you mean. I had an appointment at 28 weeks. MW sent me to MDU at 30 weeks. Im seeing her tomorrow & then have to go back at 34, 36, 38 & 40 weeks. Also have a consultants appointment at 37 weeks.

Im driven nuts between it all. Im working, dc etc & really don't know why I bother going as they don't even listen to me.

Take care.

MadBannersAndCopPorn · 03/12/2013 19:39

Thankyou miracle
I think as everything went so smoothly with dd1 I thought I was in the clear, at least I'll know when I see midwife on Thursady...
These feelings are completely different to what I had with dd1 as baby felt 'engaged' by this point, whereas this one doesn't.

What have they said are the options for you re: turning baby/ breech birth? I don't know much about breech pregnancies.... [pops off to interrogate google]

Normally if a midwife thought a baby was breech at 36 weeks you'd be offered an ecv to turn it. If on Thursday it is breech they can still offer an ecv, which would be on a different day at the hospital. It's ot as successful at 38/39 weeks but could still work.

If it doesn't then its a choice of a vaginal breech birth or a section.

theborrower · 03/12/2013 20:59

I had an EMCS because of an undiagnosed breech. They always thought she was the right way round, but I suspect that actually she was breech all along because she had hip dysplasia, and I never felt kicks high up in my tummy, they were always really low down, right at the bottom of my uterus. When I told my midwife this she said it was probably the baby's hands, so I pictured baby punching me above its head. Only when talking to a colleague (who also had an undiagnosed breech) about baby's kicks, she said that hers were also low, but because it was her first baby she didn't know any different. Her second baby's kicks were more spread out and near the top (and not breech).

DIYandEatCake · 03/12/2013 21:13

Dd1 was breech and her head was the most noticeable thing - a big round lump that strained up under my ribs all the time. I didn't feel kicks low down was she was frank breech (feet up in front of her face). If the midwife's not sure when she sees you she'll refer you for a scan to check position ASAP.

Xenadog · 04/12/2013 07:16

I'm 38+2 and my baby is breech.

I can easily feel her head quite high up and kicks lower down. At 34 weeks I had a scan and the breech position was confirmed. I'm booked in for a c section a week today.

As for the ECV - it might be a little late for having that done now so you really do need to check with the MW.

MadBannersAndCopPorn · 04/12/2013 08:52

Thankyou for all your replies and for not being judgy about my carelessness with appointments.
I can't feel a noticeable head up high but I have a very long torso so no rib stabbing etc

It hope when she sees me, the midwife says all is fine and just stabby fanjo as saggy said. ..

I wouldn't feel happy with pushing out a beech baby as I tore with dd1 and she was head down and only 6.12.

I have to have another scan in a few days time. If the baby is still breech I will have a straight choir between ECV or ELCS. Think we will go down the ELCS route at that point. Here's a thread I started as there is hardly any information out there:

ECV or ELCS

MiracleOntheM4 · 04/12/2013 09:53

ps. Just checked my notes and it seems I missed
Booking a GP appointment at 34 weeks...oops Blush. Was my last week in the office and I seem to remember thinking I'd only bother if I was worried about anything and ten promptly forgot about it entirely as all seemed fine. Any imagine ever doing that with DD!!

MadBannersAndCopPorn · 04/12/2013 12:05

Thankyou Miracle Just reading the thread now- a bit of a mixed bag of opinions out there.

I think if I were in that position I would choose the ELCS, especially as it's come so late in pregnancy- it seems more predictable... Do you have other young children at home? I have dd 18mos so need to be able to grab her pick her up from the get go

The way you described feeling about your 34 week app is probably what I've been doing for 12 weeks- not realising the time going so bloody quick...

I'll update tomorrow when I've seen MW- may be all fine and me getting worked up

[Goes off to read Miracles thread whilst chanting "every pregnancy is different"]

Sorry, just read further down thread and see you have a clingy 3yo! Grin

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 04/12/2013 12:36

Without wanting to scare monger, because I am not a medic, but this thread, and those linked to it, put me off ECV forever. Sad

Shellywelly1973 · 04/12/2013 12:43

That thread is bloody scary!!

Its put me off ECV. My baby is currently breech but im considering going for a vaginal birth if she doesn't turn as I am concerned about recovery from a c/s. This is my 6th baby...

MadBannersAndCopPorn · 05/12/2013 13:29

Started reading it and realised it could be potentially distressing.. so stopped but will read after I've been seen and know what's going on.
