Hyperemesis Support

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable for sufferers, with information about medications, coping strategies, hospital admissions, useful links, advice for family members, and much more.

I would like to thank MOH and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

MOG she is tiny but beautiful. My 12 week scan is tomorrow and I am soooo nervous. I had a friend who had a missed miscarriage and that is all I can think about. I so want to see the heartbeat. Wish me luck?

LucindaE · 28/01/2014 20:32

What dashing on to wish you that luck - the chances are all in your favour, and also another poor you! for Jen still suffering at this stage. Hope your father is in a good mood when he's involved.

Good luck What
Hope it all goes well. I'm sure all will be fine and it'll be lovely to see your little baba :-)

Jen
Not long...although I remember my patience getting thinner towards the end and the closer I got the less I could wait! That was even with me having a fixed c section date knowing I wouldn't go over (breech, but relieved so I could have the damn thing over with sooner!)

The whole pram, car seat ,cot etc etc is ridiculous. The choice and the cost. I remember looking at a Stokke pram and thinking it looked nice until I noticed it cost the same as a second hand car. Rejected.

Anyway must try and sleep, it's always worse the next day if I'm tired.

Meerka · 29/01/2014 09:08

good luck what! if you havent already been. Hope it was good news.

punkstar ... the stokke cost the same as a 2nd hand car? wow. Did see some on line for like ... 1000pounds and they didnt look that special to me ... kind of gobsmacking.

yes, I find that if I don't sleep well the next day is worse too. Bit of an arse with insomnia.

PunkStar · 29/01/2014 11:46

Hehe Meerka the whole baby thing seems to be much like a wedding. Triple the price and people will pay it.
Seriously OH bought a little Suzuki Swift for £900 for commuting, he got over 100 thousand miles out of it before we decided it was a little too unsafe. I'm sure no pram could match that distance!

Saw Prof t'other day, thinks I'm doing well (gaining weight, vomiting pretty restricted on current dose) however in his experience he's found it rare at this point if it's not gone for any miraculous recovery :-( although he did say not impossible.
Seems a lot of his patients completely remit around 18-20 week mark, quite dramatically.

I'm jealous. I tend to get the impression on forums that the majority of us are cursed with it until the placenta is out, perhaps the fact we all sought support in the first place may be a bias towards more severe end of spectrum for us lot (but then all his patients are severe, they only get referred to him by obs if steroids need starting)
Will stop waffling speculating.

jenpatnim · 29/01/2014 13:21

Punkstar - how far along are you now?

I am having a quiet day at home today, nothing much to report.

PunkStar · 29/01/2014 14:15

Jen
I will be 22 weeks this coming weekend. I don't think I'll get any worse than I am but for my own mental health I would love to just get to work for a few months. Just so I know I did it. Managed to get back around the 18 week mark last time until 37 weeks.

Quiet days are nice. For the past month or so I've been able to start reading again which is wonderful for breaking up the monotony.

LucindaE · 29/01/2014 16:09

Dizzy Any news on that number ringing back aboutmeds?
What How are things?
Punkstar The people on this thread at the moment have been unlucky -
as 'the Prof' says, it does get dramatically better for most sometime between 14-20 weeks, but at the moment, we've got people who are suffering throughout, you poor things. Sad. While he's the expert, I have known people improve long past that date -so you never know. Some like Jen did improve for a while, and then unfortunately, got ill again. Mother hen doesn't think you should force yourself back.
Meerka Is the upchucking going on?
Livingzuid It's so awful having this neighbour problem, and the fraud problem, as well as the Hyperemesis!
Hope everyone is coping. I don't understand how it's raining when it's so cold!

Lucinda
That's given me some hope. I do have occasional good days I would love it if the good days became the norm.

Living
Ahhhh I feel your pain, I once owned a ground floor flat and the neighbours upstairs put wooden floors down with no sound proofing. They had a three year old banging the floors at five am every single day. I went insane. Managed to sell it eventually though....

Meerka · 29/01/2014 18:20

the upchucking is a bit better thanks but the nausea is as firmly in residence as ever

whatareyoueventalkingabout · 29/01/2014 18:23

Hey all. Wriggly little baby on there due in August 14th. We can put it in our stokke pram when it's born ;-)

Thank you for all of the support xxx

Iworrymyselftosleep · 29/01/2014 18:56

Hello

MoG Eve is lovely. I hope you're getting plenty of cuddles.

I personally will never eat any biscuits again after this pregnancy. In my first pg I nibbled biscuits to try and stop the vomiting (worse on an empty stomach) and to reduce heartburn (worse on an empty stomach). I've barely eaten them in the last four years, until now when my 3am snack to limit early morning vomming is again digestive biscuits. Dry crumbly horrible things. I can barely choke them down, but as I can't eat anything else - or crucially keep water down til I've eaten the sodding things - I persevere. No Biscuit for me thank you...

Ugh. I'm throwing up less - once or twice every day or so. I was like this til the end of my last pregnancy. The nausea is untouched yet is compromised by The Hunger which means that every few hours I have to eat even tho I don't really want to.

Anyone any good heartburn tips? Gaviscon unfortunately makes me puke. Zantac / ranitidine is ok but if there's ny good tips out there, I would love you to share??!

Congrats what I'm about a week ahead of you (8th August) it's lovely to see the scan isn't it?

PunkStar · 29/01/2014 19:10

What
Congrats, glad scan okay. Big relief for you . Hope you got some clear scan pics. 20 week scan will soon come around.

Iworry
No extra advice other than I use ranitidine at a dose of 150mg twice a day although often only need it once a day. Have found milk and yoghurt can soothe but then dairy seems to be one of the few food groups I can tolerate.
I know what you mean about the hunger vs nausea thing, until I went on steroids though the nausea won and I just couldn't eat anything other than some quartered decrusted toast. Glad those days are behind me :-)

Meerka · 29/01/2014 20:32

what, congrats, glad to hear all is good with the Wriggler :)

SliceOfLime · 29/01/2014 20:58

Congratulations what it's such a relief to see it, isn't it? I'm due 2 August. (My DD's birthday!) - lots of August babies on the thread now!

All ok ish here, plodding along, haven't been sick for about 10 days so really pleased but still very nauseous all the time and lots of retching, I manage to force it back down though usually. Nice.

iworry I know what you mean about biscuits, I have a biscuit tin by my bed... It's shortbread fingers and malted milk biscuits for me, digestives (which I used to love) make me heave. Forcing them down to make the sick feeling manageable, yuk. I have to have me in the morning before getting up. Roll on August...

Pram prices are outrageous, I admit that I have a bugaboo cameleon which I love but cost nearly £800. Dh was stunned that a pram could cost that much but I've used it every day for 2.5 years and it will now be getting used again, so not too bad on a cost by use basis! Blush

living what a nightmare with your neighbours, it boggles my mind that people can be so inconsiderate. Any chance of them moving out any time soon...?

livingzuid · 29/01/2014 21:42

Yay what fantastic news.

punk we must be due at around the same time I am 22 weeks on Saturday!

worry I have a hot milk in the evening it's all that works for me. I only want whole milk and have been drinking lots! Strange craving.

lime we are hoping to move. Depends on dh work and we won't know till April. Realistically it won't be till after the baby is born but I can hope. It's awful but I fantasise about a rocket launcher and using it on their stereo....

August is the best month for a birthday in my humble opinion Grin has birthday in August

I was sick nearly today. Tmi but I burped Blush and it all reappeared it was awful. Felt so sick all afternoon. Then went to PILs for dinner and ate a huge curry Confused

My lithium dosage was increased on Friday as I was struggling. So my head is better but the side effect is really awful nausea again. It's between feeling suicidal and paranoid but physically good, or feeling normal in my head but physically wanting to curl up and sleep all day! Blood taken today and will see psychiatrist on Friday.

The upside is we are starting to redecorate the room for the baby, PIL are buying both moses basket and buggy for the baby, we have had an unused cot and mattress donated by DH's best friend which was 200 euro new, DH won 150 euro of IKEA vouchers at work so I can finally have some new curtains and I think my parents want to contribute. Presents are already coming in from family - we asked for clothes, MIL visited H&M already and meerka we got given some cute baby grows from Hema they have nice things! I really like it there what a life saver in an otherwise barren shopping environment.

So actually all that is on our list left to buy is a car seat and steriliser kit with bottles - I spied a Tommy Tippee starter pack that looked great, hope to get that next month. I don't think we are going to shop till April time for anything else. Pram budget is around 200 euro which should get us something good. I want something easy, small and lightweight it's a minefield out there trying to figure it all out! Overwhelmed by choice!

Can I ask a slightly dumb question? Would a sling be too warm to hold a newborn in during June? I love the idea of a sling but don't want to have a poor hot baby in there!

livingzuid · 29/01/2014 21:53

Oh and jen I broke my new sewing machine before even getting a stitch in. Who invented front loading bobbins! MIL used to work for singer so she's going to get it fixed for me. Not an auspicious start so dh has banished me back to knitting. I did not realise but there is a wonderful wool shop devoted to all things knitting about 5 minutes from my flat. The are actually many random shops in my neighbourhood come to think of it Grin so I am going to explore and am thinking of starting with a baby blanket which I should have ready by next winter! Any pointers would be most welcome I have 5mm needles but think I need something wider.

Oh and I made £50 on eBay after posting. Chuffed and now looking at what else can be sold!

Sally8655 · 29/01/2014 22:35

Hi all

Just popping in to say all is well. Sickness completely gone!!! C section scar getting there but still painful when i move.
So tired as Jayden only sleeps during the day, typical!
Breastfeeding is proving difficult with bleeding nipples etc as he is not latching well. However he was weighed today and has not lost any of his birth weight so he is clearly getting fed well.

I'm so pleased things are going well for MOG :-)

I must admit, all the suffering during pregnancy and delivery are so worth it. I can not express enough how much I love this little man.

Sending hugs to you all xxxx

livingzuid · 29/01/2014 22:38

Wow Sally that's fantastic glad to hear you are healing well and Jayden is doing good! Any chance of a picture? :)

jenpatnim · 29/01/2014 23:17

Aww Sally that is so lovely to hear! I feel sniffly just thinking about having snuggle time with my wee boy - HOPEFULLY I am next, seeing as you other ladies need to keep yours cooking a wee while longer.

Living, I have a sewing machine that I got for christmas when I was 14, but I never really learned how to use it properly. I always meant to. My cross stitch project is going well, and I will hopefully get a big chunk of it done before baby makes his entrance. I have done pretty well so far - over half of it in a week and a half.

I got the tommee tippee starter set as well - it looks pretty good. I have it all unpacked in the cupboard. I have boobs, a breast pump, bottles, steriliser and a tin of infant formula so I am prepared for all eventualities.

Meerka · 30/01/2014 07:50

sally so pleased to hear that you and Jayden are doing well. Really am, specially after that awful, awful preg. < seconds living in wondering if a photo might be available>

PunkStar · 30/01/2014 08:52

Living
I have a selection of slings. Little Boy was born in July so was quite warm, we started with a baby björn but found he was too hot in it and I also didn't like the way you couldn't 'frog' his legs, just seemed to hang from the crotch with little support around bottom/hips. I have a boba 3G which is great much more comfy and nice support around his bum, it lasts until something like 40lbs. He can go on my back with it now he is bigger which he seems to enjoy. Not sure if suitable for newborns, I bought it a little while after, but also have a Boba lightweight which isn't pretty like 3G but good in heat, have used it in Bosnia, Croatia and Istanbul with no overheating. Again though he wasn't newborn...

And then I have a stretchy wrap (again boba!!! Promise I don't work for them...I just got on with this brand!!!) which is really comfy, there are different techniques for tying which just take a pit of practise depending if newborn or older....I used this around the house if I had stuff to do and a baby that didn't wasn't to be put down, amazing!!! There are rules for them which are in instructions like you should always be able to kiss and be able to see their head so they are not burrowed down etc.

Depends what sort of sling you want there are carriers/sling rings/stretchy wraps Bit boggling to be honest was a bit of trial and error for me but spent some time on internet and went to a sling library locally....I think wraps best on smaller babs, we can't use it now...there are woven wraps too which I don't have but I think they are cooler and probably better in the Summer than what I own. I'll probably get another wrap for newborn so will let ya know what I discover....

Yes we are due a the same time! I'll be having C section week before....first week of June.

Sorry to hear about probs you are having. Sounds such a balancing act between both conditions. Hope your meds get sorted and your mood is okay soon. I can't imagine what it is like...it's bad enough when I have a low mood day with the HG let alone what you're contending with.

Jen
Sounds like you are well prepared, we did the same-covered for all feeding eventualities. Luckily LB knew what to do with the boob, I had no idea!!! So that was one thing that worked out well but was glad we had stuff ready in case it wasn't a success.

Sally
Glad CS is settling. I used lanisoh on nipples which sorted...

Soz, bit of a wrap essay there but they are so expensive and it's easy to buy one that's not quite right for you as I discovered!!!

MurderOfGoths · 30/01/2014 09:10

Forgot to say, think this will amuse you all. You know the dreaded Ondansetron constipation? Well when I was being discharged from hospital one of the questions the doctor asks is whether you've had a bowel movement and how it was. I came so close to replying with "better than ever!" Grin

MurderOfGoths · 30/01/2014 09:11

Sally Breastfeeding is hard! You expect it to be easy as anything, it's natural after all, but it is hard so well done!

Iworrymyselftosleep · 30/01/2014 09:33

how come all of you get to drink milk? Everytime I've tried it's been returned to sender. I tried a cup of tea the other day and spent the morning pale faced and sweating (throwing up would have been preferable). I want cereal. I want to drink milk... I have a terrible thirst for it but it won't stay down...
