Hyperemesis Support

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable for sufferers, with information about medications, coping strategies, hospital admissions, useful links, advice for family members, and much more.

I would like to thank MOH and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Wow Sally your baby will be here by the end of the week! So exciting! Have you thought about what you are going to eat once you're HG-free? Grin

Hi Jess I don't have anything to add it the good advice you've already had, this is a lovely place to come and moan when people in real life don't understand. If one more person asks me if I've tried ginger biscuits....!

Meerka I remember reading that about the nipple stimulation last time... I thought it sounded like it would get a bit painful, 3 hours?! None of the old wives tales worked for me last time, I was 13 days overdue when I finally went into labour...

12 weeks today! Scan on Weds and can't wait.

Meerka · 20/01/2014 15:43

Oh wow sally PHEW ! you must be sooooooo glad. All the very best !!

whatareyou i have a maybe unreliable feeling prochlorperazine is cumulative but please, please don't rely on that. Try ringing your doctor? are they approachable? if not, maybe try the preg sickness support line on 024 7638 2020. The very experienced doctor there will ring you back, if you leave a message.

slice all I can wonder is who on earth sat around for 3 hours tickling their nipple and then participated in a study?!

MurderOfGoths · 20/01/2014 16:16

So glad to hear that Sally!

ChaffinchOfDoom · 20/01/2014 16:51

also here with a sore throat today; have had a few of those jakemans sweets, they're nice, had a quick squizz at the ingredients hope they're ok in pg but now I'm near 30 weeks I refuse to worry. Loathe sore throats.

I don't particularly like doing the big grocery shop online as I like having a nose round the supermarket. but it's hard work with SPD, even with the little trolleys - I hear ya, MoG, was taking shuffling slow steps back to the car felt like an old lady Grin

lots of randoms have noticed I'm with child, all of a sudden. I must be huge, feels the same though. mums on the school run...passersby... there's a lot of good will which is nice.

ChaffinchOfDoom · 20/01/2014 16:53

only a couple days left then, sally!! then being so uncomfortable will seem like a weird dream as you cuddle your baby and lose all feeling of nausea Thanks Envy Cake Wine

Iworrymyselftosleep · 20/01/2014 16:57

slice I have my 12 week scan on weds too Grin

Iworrymyselftosleep · 20/01/2014 17:42

what my experience is that it's culmulative and if I'm late with a dose I get very ill again. I did a google search and an old mn thread comes up saying the same thing.

I don't mess it around as I'm so ill when I do. I take a dose every six hours and have an alarm set for the 3am dose!

Sally8655 · 20/01/2014 17:59

Thanks everybody, I am so pleased. The consultant today was lovely and could see I was clearly distressed by the shortness of breath etc.

She said that so long as I didn't mind the likelyhood of it ending in c section then they were happy to go ahead.
I just hope things go back to normal pretty soon after delivery and symptoms don't linger for too long.
Dh is off work now until I'm home from hospital next week so things have worked out quite well.
He's gone to get me some sweet corn soup which is currently the only thing I seem to be able to eat without feeling yuk.
Don't know what ill fancy after birth as there are so many things I know ill probably never eat again! I have cereal bars in my hospital bag as toast is still a no no.

Really feel for all you guys who are just starting this journey or have a while still to go. I remember my first 2 trimesters were just endless hell. I will be keeping in touch to let you know how things progress after the birth.
I've been helped and encouraged so much by this forum and don't know how I would have got through without lucinda and you all. It really only helps talking to people who fully understand.

LucindaE · 20/01/2014 18:21

Sally ThanksThe best of possible luck with the birth, which I hope happens tonight! I'm so glad this thread has helped you get through what has probably been one of the worst experiences of your life. Smile
Meerka I was wondering that too about the nipple pulling Somebody very 'hands on'?! Grin
SliceofLime and I worry The best of luck with scans.
MurderofGoths You poor thing, that is awful. Is it like sciatica, only worse?
Jen I hope sleeping a bit better.
Jess How did the GP Visit go - not sure if you said today?
Iworry I forgot to say - how awful about having a premature baby in the middle of a move, with Hypeermesis. You must have felt got at.
Livingzuid When is interview?
Chaffinch Glad you have that globular look Grin.
Bet I've cross posted.
xx

Hi there, ended up speaking to gp over the phone - sympathetic but wanted me to try a little longer just resting and nibbling/sipping slowly and constantly. It sort of worked and I have got more food and water down today. Will see how it goes - gp did encourage me to contact them if I was struggling to get enough food and liquid. Which I'm doing ok with at the moment - just feeling utterly rotten!

MurderOfGoths · 20/01/2014 18:42

Lucinda It feels like someone is trying to saw my pelvis in half, front to back. Very sharp, constant pain. I thought I was used to constant pain after having chronic back problems for the last 6 years, but SPD is something else entirely!

ChaffinchOfDoom · 20/01/2014 18:58

my hips feel rusted at the back; like the tin woman who needs oiling. also get mad cramps after being on feet at work; dead legs and painful curling toes. just great isn't it.

somedizzywhore1804 · 20/01/2014 19:14

Hi everyone.

Wondering if I can join this club? Not that it's a club anyone wants to be in!

Am 16 weeks and after bad sickness for around 10 weeks now I have been hospitalised with HG after constant (literally- every 5-10 mins) vomiting between Friday night and getting admitted on Saturday afternoon.

I've been on constant drips and I am feeling low. I'd appreciate any advice from you seasoned pros.

whatareyoueventalkingabout · 20/01/2014 19:30

Some dizzy, I only just joined and everyone is lovely. So sorry for you, are you in hosp right now?

Meerka · 20/01/2014 19:43

hiya dizzy really sorry to hear it's so bad :s every 5-10 mins is horrendous!

I'd say try to make sure you get sufficient meds before you are discharged. the Nice guidelines are really helpful.

the drips themselves might help a bit? my gyne said that the lack of liquid can make you feel veyr sick all on its own, even without the hormonal aspect. So some rehydration could help a bit

it does sound like you have it really badly though :( so meds, strong meds, are probably the answer ... other than that it's an endurance battle :(

Is this your first baby?

somedizzywhore1804 · 20/01/2014 19:56

Yes I am in hospital right now. I've never stayed overnight in a hospital before so am feeling a bit scared which is pathetic as I'm 28 Confused

It is my first baby (and maybe my last if this is what pregnancy does to me!)

I had a scan today and baby is (touch wood) fine and wriggling like a good un. I, unfortunately, feel like death.

I'm taking Cyclizine but I'm not sure how much good it is doing. I will have a look at the NICE guidelines, thank you.

Have managed some toast today (and 17 drips in the past 24 hours!) but still feeling constantly nauseous.

I've had more fun!

Meerka · 20/01/2014 20:40

cyclazine is the very first line. YOu need a lot stronger than that :( the guidelines will let you know what to ask for.

the nausea is just the worst, even worse than the vomitting :(

MurderOfGoths · 20/01/2014 20:59

dizzy The good news is that there are a few other drugs and combinations of drugs to try, so there's still hope! I hadn't had a hospital stay until HG with DS, so know how you feel there, I was terrified, but it's not all that bad and at least you are in the best place for help.

somedizzywhore1804 · 20/01/2014 21:15

Thanks Meerka and MurderOfGoths. I am going to properly read the guidelines and get DH to take notes.

I'm very stressed about work too. Am a teacher and haven't been in for 6 of the last 8 weeks of school. Really starting to fear for my job to be honest.

ChaffinchOfDoom · 20/01/2014 21:36

dizzy

sorry to hear you're laid up with the drips; but you're in the right place.
If/when you see your consultant in the morning ask for ondansatron. That throws them in a spin! it's a stronger drug but has helped me to stay alive.
it can only be prescribed by a consultant so it's a chance to get it while you're there.....

yep revise up on the info links through this thread, then you can have some nice debates with the clueless medical staff

SliceOfLime · 20/01/2014 21:57

iworry so exciting! Everything crossed for both of us Smile

Dizzy I'm glad you found the thread, I remember yours last week about work, you poor thing, sorry to hear it's so much worse. Don't fear for your job, I'm no employment lawyer but surely when you're so ill and it's so well evidenced there are no grounds for dismissal?! Esp as someone said above I think, it's a self-limiting condition (40 weeks of puking, yay) but then you will be on mat leave and you'll be fine. Worst that can happen is if you're off sick with something pregnancy related within a month (I think) of your due date, you can be made to start your mat leave at that point. So please don't worry about work, you have enough going on! Hope you get stronger meds soon.

livingzuid · 20/01/2014 22:12

Enjoy the scans ladies!

Dizzy I am sure that it is illegal to get rid of someone who is long term sick. Please don't let that add to your worries. Just focus on you and the baby, it will get better.

Thinking of you Sally can't wait to hear the news.

Goth sorry it is so ow.

Had interview today and the only reason I went was so I could prove to benefits people I am 'looking'. Really just want to take the year off and doctors are getting militant about me not working as my blood pressure continues to go up. So I have the possibility of pre eclampsia to worry about as well as trying not to vom.

And the interview was a waste of time nothing more demoralising than having to put yourself through that for a job you know you won't get! Still, can close that door at least and move on. Had such bad nausea throughout so will be trying not to do that again in a hurry Grin

jenpatnim · 20/01/2014 23:12

Hey all, hi to the new people. Dizzy, I am a teacher too, (and our school's rep for NASUWT). Try not to worry, they cannot fire you for being sick or pregnant. Your union will be behind you if they give you trouble.

Speaking of work, mine was on the phone today. My replacement needs help with a paperwork thing, and I was asked if I could help her. I was offered a computer to take home, but that would just leave me doing the whole task myself at home... so I said it would be easier for me to go in. I am going in for a couple of hours on Wednesday morning to show her what to do and help her, and hopefully that will be it done.... I really don't think I am up for regular trips into work or working at home at this stage.

I have physio tomorrow for the SPD, so hopefully that will help.

Hope that everyone else is coping, and also hope that it all goes well for Sally.... fingers crossed for an easy delivery - she deserves it after such an awful pregnancy!

somedizzywhore1804 · 21/01/2014 02:35

Thanks all I'm going to have a good root through all this info tomorrow.

Does anyone know how normal it is a couple of days after a bad HG attack to feel very like you've pulled loads of muscles? Just woken up with this- all muscles in stomach, shoulders, ribs... i.e the places I hurt wretching- but nurse I called looked at me blankly Confused

ChaffinchOfDoom · 21/01/2014 09:25

yeah, you strain everything when you vom hard. Sad feel better soon dizzy
