Hyperemesis Support

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable for sufferers, with information about medications, coping strategies, hospital admissions, useful links, advice for family members, and much more.

I would like to thank MOH and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Happy belated birthday sally :)

LucindaE · 03/01/2014 19:56

Hello Everyone 'Loopy Lou' - love the name, Chaffinch is back.
FrillyPigWelcome, I see you have been having wonderful advice from Meerkaand Others, which I can only agree with, poor you, having to go in for IV, and then to have someone have the nerve to come out with that ignorant rubbish about pregnant not ill. You are pregnant and very ill! Angry They said the same things to IWorry. I see she hasn't posted lately - hope she's OK. Things will get better. It must be so difficult with a LO with Aspergers - my half brother is autistic spectrum, empathy is very difficult for him even in maturity. Is there any chance of relatives helping out in non school hours and these holidays?
Sally Congratulations on new home done so nicely already, you organised thing. I never knew that about mucus plugs.
Jen I'm glad the Spa was nice. I assume the back massage was done lying on your side - I remember the difficulties the chiropractitioner had treating my back in late preg Grin.
Livingzuid and MeerkaIt sounds good that they only have fireworks once a year - at the expense of sounding like a killjoy.
Livingzuid A horrible way to begin the New Year , unfortunately you had the headache and sickness someone who'd been pissing it up should have got.Sad
CrazyThursday and Punkstar You are both very brave to fight to swallow the giant tablets - I couldn't keep iron supplements down at all, and Punkstar's swallowing of vomit deserves a medal.
SliceofLIme 'Wrong kind of toast' lol.
Totes I thought it was energetic of you to be riding, my goodness!
Apologies to anyone rudely ignored. I hope everyone has a wonderful SOME art of 2014 to make up for this bit.
xx

jenpatnim - please, which hospital in belfast? Please say the Royal. I've just been referred there... oh please let it be the royal.

I'm just about hanging in there. I've just spent the last few days at home feeling awful. Have prochlorperazine which is barely stopping the vomiting and I've thrown up 3 (4?) times today. The doctor says thats all he can prescribe and that when my ketones are 3+ to go to hospital. He also suggested those wrist bands - and Im sure they do help, but when I'm vomiting so hard I'm throwing up blood and the bile is burning as it drips from my nose, I have no faith in wrist bands. (Sorry. Feeling very down.)

My mum goes home tomorrow and I'm dreading it. No matter how much DP does, I'll still be obn y own with DS at times and all I want to do is sit very still, not always compatible with a 3 yo.

Sorry. As I said. Very down. Feeling hopeless. And helpless.

ChaffinchOfDoom · 03/01/2014 20:22

well....week 27 on the dot = massive annoying heartburn, after chocolate. What a crock.

jenpatnim · 03/01/2014 21:53

Iworry - it IS the Royal. I am booked in there, and have been in 4 times with high ketones. Here's what to do - if your ketones are high, go down there and present yourself (3+ or 4+) and ask to see a dr. You will be assessed by a midwife who will check your ketones. DO THIS IN THE MORNING - 8.30 or 9AM. When your ketones show up as being high or large, they will get the doctor for you, who will put in a cannula for the IV and send you up to the Day Obstetrics Unit - which is EXACTLY where you want to be.

The two midwives there (Paula and Jackie) along with Sister Watt, will set you up with an IV and anti sickness meds. You can stay there all day until 4 or 5pm, and they will rehydrate you and look after you. You can nap, it is quiet, clean and lovely. At the end of the day they will re-check the ketones (they will try to get you to eat) and if they are happy with your progress (and after a dr has oked it) send you home. But if they are not happy, they will disconnect the cannula, wrap up your arm, and send you home with instructions to come back in the morning for more fluids. That way you don't have to spend the night in a noisy ward. I had this a few times.

Honestly, it is the best place to be, because they are understanding and SO CARING, you really feel like your wellbeing matters to them and they want to see you feel better. And they never make you feel like a timewaster, and they always told me I did the right thing by coming in. They discuss meds with you before they give them and they are just lovely.

I have a scan on Monday and I will be dropping in a thank you card and some choccies for them, as I wanted to wait until I was absolutely sure I wouldn't be back with them before I did, but I think I have it under control by now.

LucindaE · 04/01/2014 09:21

Jen That sounds great - I'm so glad you won't be going back!IWorry You poor thing, I do feel for you- when it is so violent it comes out of the nose, it is horrible and stings as well - you are at the worst stage, things will get better, I am sure. I dn't see why the doctor won't accept that the present drugs aren't working - he seems to be ignoring the NICE guidelines. It is so difficult with a LO, I don't know how people manage. It might be worth phoning the Pregnancy Sickness SOS as well as they are refusing you different meds and you are still being sick on 024 7638 2020.
Chaffinch That heartburn is awful - I was on a dismal bland diet for the duration because of it - I hope the puking is minimal? The heartburn can set it off, as well you know...
Hugs to all.

Lucinda, they really were great with me, and if she does what I suggest, she will get great care and avoid overnights in noisy wards.

I also have frequent heartburn, I now bring my bottle of peptac liquid with me everywhere and have one beside the bed. Fun times.

Also I had a great time at the spa, Lucinda, and the massage was with me on my side, with extra towels given to support the bump. It was a special mother-to-be massage so they were all ready for me! They also used rose oil which is apparently pregnancy-friendly. It was lovely.

Meerka · 04/01/2014 13:32

Hope you had a good break, lucinda

oh gosh, jen, it sounds perfect. What a treat after the last months.

Iworry, please take care of yourself. Glad you're going to such a good hospital.

ChaffinchOfDoom · 04/01/2014 20:32

heartburn tailed off again, think it was just a wispa what did it...avoid!! bum, just had a wispa gold...hopefully different enough
sorry I am inanely twittering about chocolate

love to all X

LucindaE · 05/01/2014 09:08

I hope everyone is managing today, and no hospital admissions [Sad unless deliberate in that wonderful sounding place mentioned by Jen.
I wonder why - if it's possible to have such a set up in one place, it isn't in all of them - not sure of situation regarding funding for different areas - I think there may be one in Birmingham and at least one in London, I think Kalidasa mentioned one...

Hi. HG is crap. lucky this is my 3rd pregnancy and its no way been as bad! no hopsital admissions yet! Does anyone ever feel that other people think your being a drama queen over the sickness? Lucky my other half is great and fully understands. i just think my manager thinks im being dramatic tho.

jenpatnim · 05/01/2014 13:24

Lucinda, I don't think that the setup itself is so unusual. They also use that area for glucose tolerance tests and various other things. It is just that the staff are so lovely, they really make sure you are cared for. I think that makes all the difference.

I have my sizing scan tomorrow, anxious to see how big he is now!

I'm tired, finding it hard to sleep, hard to get comfortable, heartburn, aches and pains......

I'm ready for this to be over, guys.

Meerka · 05/01/2014 15:22

Hiya me1984 ... yes! less so this preg but the first one was really annoying with the 'just get on with it attitude'. Including from the fricking doctors who seem to ignore that you've lost 10kg in 6 weeks and you can't drink more than 3 mugs liquid a day.

This site is quite good and bless it, it has a section which anyone who's had HG will smile at with the bloody annoying comments from other people: Annoying comments

glad at least that your DH is supportive. It really helps doesnt it. How are you coping with your other children?

jen good luck tomorrow! YES to caring staff making a world of difference. They really do.

LucindaE · 06/01/2014 11:37

me1984 Welcome, I think ignorant comments that assume you are in idiot, like, 'Have you tried changing your diet/ginger/ etc etc etc' put the finishing touch ohn the misery, as do the judgemental 'Get over it' sort.
For sure, you are very brave going for it a third time, you are the veteran, and need no advice about how to keep an eye on those ketones, etc. Congratulations on staying out of hospital.
I hope everyone else is, FrillyPigIWorrySliceofLime PUnk and everyone, I hope keeping those liquids down.
Jen That unit sounds so good because of being admitted without a long delay particularly, I've known woman on this thread having to wait hours and one place even turned a woman away with 3+ketones, while FluffyWhiteKittenswas actually discharged with that - newbies don't think I'm telling you not to go straight to A and E with that reading, those were exceptional cases!
Sally Baby still waiting?
Chaffinch and Totes how are things, and Evryone?

Hey Puke crew
just saw MoG over on the SPD thread, she's about.

have some days off work to kick back and relax - err do shopping/dry cleaning/ washing/ hoovering!
just had a nice salted pretzel thing from Lidl for lunch, need some water to sip now.

MurderOfGoths · 06/01/2014 16:22

Hey everyone, I'm still about, the puking is under control now, just everything else about the pregnancy sucks. Hope you are all as OK as possible with this wretched illness

jenpatnim · 06/01/2014 16:48

Hi Guys

Well I have positive news from 34 weeks. I had my checkup today and the doctor was very pleased with everything. She did a scan and said that the baby's size was perfectly average, which they like, right amount of fluid, perfect placenta, good blood flow in the cord - basically everything perfect. She estimates the baby's size now at 6lb 8oz (eep) and has me booked in to come back on 10th of feb, providing I haven't given birth already.

Overall a very encouraging report, and I was happy.

Then nipped up to the day obstetrics unit to hand in that card and chocolates, and they remembered me, were asking how it was all going and told me to bring the baby up to see them when he is born! I was glad I went, they seemed pleased.

Sally8655 · 06/01/2014 17:32

Hi all

Yes lucinda still waiting! Each day im saying to myself "it's today" and it just passes by.

Jen, lovely news about scan xx

I'm just back from hospital. My scan was all good too and baby is thought to be 6lb 2oz which is up from 5lb last scan.
The sonographer laughed when she showed us that our baby has lots of hair. It looked like he already had an afro :-)
Induction is now booked for the 27th instead of 23rd if he has not made an appearance before. But they think he will any day now as I'm apparently all go down below.
Bp was not too bad again so all seems well.
Sickness is on the up again so I'm trying to eat what I can and rest where possible. Apparently HG sometimes spikes towards the end.

Carpets finally fitted tomorrow! It feels like I'm settling in a bit better now and I'm sure it'll be much more homely once they are down :-)

MurderOfGoths · 06/01/2014 17:48

Jen That's great news, you are so close now! Grin

And you Sally! Can't wait to hear you've had your little ones :)

jenpatnim · 06/01/2014 19:36

Sally, I can't believe they estimate mine being bigger than yours, when you are several weeks ahead? I am getting very nervous about birthing a monster huge baby....

Sally8655 · 06/01/2014 19:54

I wouldn't worry Jen, our family are usually smaller babies. He is under average for weight on the little scale they print off. Apparently the growth slows down now. I was worried by 3 weeks time id have a big one too. Your probably perfect xx

MOG, how long gave you got left now? Glad your feeling a bit better xx

MurderOfGoths · 06/01/2014 23:31

I'm 28 weeks so still a little while unfortunately

Meerka · 07/01/2014 07:40

counting the days MoG? :) have you still got some nausea? I find I'm pretty sick still in the late afternoon/evenings, but not vomitting usually.

lovely news jen and fingers crossed it's soon sally .. but after the carpets have been fitted =)

MurderOfGoths · 07/01/2014 09:38

Yeah, still a little in the evenings, not helped by the indigestion
