Can I ice skate at 19 weeks?

I booked a ticket for a Christmas ice-skate at Somerset House in London during my first trimester. I didn't think I'd feel nervous about it as I'm a good, confident skater. Now that I'm in my second trimester I'm surprised at how much more fragile I feel, and I'm wondering if it's too risky.

I'll be 19 weeks by the skating day. The ticket is for an hour and the rinks are usually crowded so people generally skate around slowly.

I think it's unlikely I'd fall over myself, but I'm worrying about someone else knocking me over, and whether my balance would be poor due to my bump.

What do you think? Has anyone else been skating in their second trimester? Can anyone advise how significant falling onto your stomach would be at this stage?

I would do it.
Not at 30 weeks though, I suspect, maybe I would if slow meander.
Some folk are huge, some are very ungainly, some are neither at 19 weeks.

Oh, ice skating outside is my favourite thing about winter in London, so that's why I'm umming and ahhing about it rather than just not going.

I would proceed with caution. The chances are that you'd be fine and have a wonderful time BUT, accidents do happen and I would hate for you to then be left regretting your decision to do something that you can do every other year.
You say that you feel fragile already, that's on land, if you feel tense or slightly anxious on the ice it may make you more likely to fall.....
Congratulations on your pregnancy x

Rhianna1980 · 30/11/2013 19:18

I wouldn't risk it. You might be really experienced but I don't trust all these wannabes and ppl who think they can skate when they can't even walk in a straight line never mind being in an ice rink . Not worth it IMHO Confused

Rhianna1980 · 30/11/2013 19:22

Forgot to say Last year on 2 occasions I went ice skating and this 20 + year old lost control came flying at me and held on to my clothes and went flying into the floor then into the wall BlushAngryAngryAngryAngry and got badly bruised! I just wanted to flipping slap her! It hurt so much Angry

HenD19 · 30/11/2013 19:24

I really wouldn't risk it but do feel sorry for you if it's something you love.

mrsksays · 30/11/2013 19:42

I was at Somerset house ice rink on Thursday and I decided against skating (I'm 25 weeks)

I would have done it if in first tri and not showing but now I have prominent bump it seems too dangerous.

PuppyMummy · 30/11/2013 19:49

I wouldn't. Id be worried about someone crashing into me as someone above has said.

TeaandHobnobs · 30/11/2013 20:06

I wouldn't. Obviously you are an experienced skater but I found that at that point in my pregnancy I was very unstable - I think my ligaments were getting too loose and I twisted my ankles on a regular basis, and faceplanted in the road at 23 weeks Sad - which may or may not have been a contributing factor to DS' arrive at 32 weeks Confused
I would say, just this one winter, give it a miss - ice skating will be there next year!

MiracleOntheM4 · 30/11/2013 20:31

A friend of mine went a few weeks ago at 33 weeks. She is a good skater.

I wouldn't do it because I would fall in my arse at the best of times...

Solasum · 30/11/2013 20:38

I passed Somerset House last night, and while as you say the rink is busy so not very fast there were a few 'experienced' skaters weaving through everyone else with barely any room to spare, jumping etc. It unsettled a few people and the ice marshals did have a word, but... I think not worth the risk, unless maybe you have tickets for a quiet (sober!) daytime slot. Definitely evening best avoided

CrispyFB · 30/11/2013 21:54

I stopped skiing at 12 weeks (indoor snow dome) not because I felt like I wasn't confident, but because I didn't trust anyone else not to smack into me despite the fact they've not done so there yet. It only takes once, and after the first trimester and the placenta is formed, a hard fall can cause an abruption. I have rotten SPD anyway but even if I didn't, ligaments are loads looser so any incident is more likely to injure you much more.

Like all things though, it's about your attitude to risk! You'd probably be fine, it's just the whole "living with your decision" if something did happen you have to consider.

peeapod · 30/11/2013 21:56

Its just one year. resolve to go next year...

redcarrot1 · 30/11/2013 22:18

I wouldn't. The last time I went skating in London kids were purposefully bumping into other people to make them fall down. Hilarious.

BlueChampagne · 30/11/2013 23:06

I was still horse riding and cycling at that stage. Only gave up former because instructor getting nervous! Cycled almost to end (esp with ds1). You have to decide.

SaucyJack · 30/11/2013 23:11

I wouldn't dream of it. There's no need to lie on the sofa for nine months, but some things really can wait.

Your whole body will have changed by 19 weeks. Centre of gravity, flexibility, cardio fitness. Not to mention the risk of some drunk taking you down with them.

nomorecrumbs · 30/11/2013 23:19

Somerset House is a big rink (for outdoor rinks) but was very crowded when I went there last year. There wasn't enough room to build up any sort of speed and this was late on a weekday night.

BettyBi0 · 30/11/2013 23:21

I wouldn't skate. Somerset house sometimes gets really busy and there are always a few people on the ice who have had a few drinks and get a bit silly. Everything gets a bit fragile and bendy when pregnant so a small injury can end up way more complicated than it would have been pre-pregnancy.

pootlebug · 30/11/2013 23:27

I'm a good skater but wouldn't do it pregnant. Too much risk of someone else knocking me over.

marzipanned · 01/12/2013 13:10

I've decided against skating this year.

The thing is, the worst case scenario - although incredibly unlikely - is so unbearably awful that I couldn't justify it.

And I do appreciate how it feels to stop doing something you love, because skiing is my absolute favourite activity in the world and that's obviously not happening this winter either.

MummyLuce · 01/12/2013 13:25

I would go skating! the baby is pretty well cushioned, I wouldn't worry.
Skiing is my favourite thing as well marzipanned, and i'm still going - ill be 32 weeks. I did it 2 years ago as well (I was pregnant then also).

marzipanned · 01/12/2013 13:34

MummyLuce aren't you terrified of someone crashing into you though? If I could ski somewhere with no other people, I'd go, but had a horrible experience a few years ago when someone completely out of control crashed into me from behind and we both fell (intertwined, skis and poles everywhere) for a good 100m down the slope. Maybe if something similar happened again and I was pregnant the baby would be fine but I couldn't take how utterly unbearable it would be if it wasn't.

lljkk · 01/12/2013 16:35

meh, people can get pushed over just walking around crowded shops (Primark Hell).

QueenElizabethTheZygon · 01/12/2013 16:39

My local one aren't insured for pregnant women so they advise not to skate while pregnant.

Golddigger · 01/12/2013 16:39

No way.
