Would you drive yourself to appt at 40 weeks?

How far into your pregnancy are you intending to drive? I have an obs appt for 40 weeks, I've been driving myself to all appointments so far but suddenly thought I might get DH to take me to that one (if I'm still going at 40 weeks!)

I was still cycling at 39 +. I would drive myself unless actually in labour or expecting some sort of procedure which might leave me feeling a bit wobbly - like a sweep. I was offered one at 40 weeks and decloned because I'd got to walk home and it didn't seem like a great plan........

onedogandababy · 25/11/2013 19:46

I drove until the day before I had dd, so 41 weeks.

Still had plenty of room behind the steering wheel, was just a bit difficult looking over my shoulder when reversing!

17leftfeet · 25/11/2013 19:48

I drove right up until being in labour and I was overdue in both pregnancies

Missmidden · 25/11/2013 19:50

Last time round I drove myself to one at 41+3! And I drove over every speed bump and pot hole I could find in an attempt to start labourSmile

If it's your first the chances are labour will start very slowly so unless it's a long drive or you're very uncomfortable at that stage I wouldn't have any worries.

2Labradors · 25/11/2013 19:50

I'm still driving around, am 39+3 weeks, and don't plan to stop. I have 2 other DC and still need to get them to school and other things they have on.

I drove the whole way through when pregnant with my other 2.

I have a sweep arranged when I'm 41 weeks though and will get DH to drive me to that appointment

OlyRoller · 25/11/2013 19:52

I rode my bike to the hospital after my waters had broken and they needed to monitor. I think you will be okay in the car.

littlebrownmouse · 25/11/2013 19:52

I drove myself to an appointment at 40+3 and told the midwife I'd been having some pains in my stomach. Had big pain in stomach on the way home from appointment and DD was born about 4hrs laterShock

TattyCatty · 25/11/2013 19:52

I drove right up until the day before DD was born, even though I'd been having contractions on and off for the previous 24 hours, so I guess I was technically still driving whilst in the latent stages of labour!

TheZeeTeam · 25/11/2013 19:56

I drove right up to the labour. Why wouldn't you?!
My friend drove herself to the hospital whilst in labour as her DP didn't drive!

RunningOutOfIdeas · 25/11/2013 19:56

Drove myself to the hospital at 41+5 weeks for induction for DD1. DH couldn't drive then.

DD2 was elcs at 39 weeks and I was driving the day before.

iwouldgoouttonight · 25/11/2013 19:57

Agree with the others, unless you can't physically fit comfortably behind the wheel you're fine to drive right up until labour starts. I cycled to the bicycle repair shop in town on my due date, then walked home, and then went into labour and had DS. So I couldn't go and get my bike back for ages!

Brandnewmamma · 25/11/2013 20:00

I drove the day I went into labour.. Had a slight show but no pain

NoComet · 25/11/2013 20:03

I drovr to my antenatal appointment the day about 18 hrs before DD2 was born, but I never get very big.

Both DDs were less than 6.5 lb

MildDrPepperAddiction · 25/11/2013 20:03

I drove right up to labour with both. Are you nervous about driving when near your date?

littlemslazybones · 25/11/2013 20:06

Op, I launched myself out of a helicopter and paraskied to my 40 week appointment with ds2, keep up.

MinesAPintOfTea · 25/11/2013 20:09

If you are comfortable behind the wheel then there's no problem. And dh will be missing time from work soon enough.

I last drove pre-birth at 40+11 to have my hair cut before bring induced.

StormBird · 25/11/2013 20:15

40+4 here! I drove myself to the hosp 2hrs agi cos of reduced movement. they did a trace which wsd fine, then decided to sweep me which I accepted and now they're keeping me in. Shock . second baby for me haf no signs but when they did the sweep they discovered I wsd already 3cm dilated Grin . well keep your fingers crossed this is it for me.

gruber · 25/11/2013 20:15

I stopped driving at 34 weeks. Drove once at 36 weeks but really wasn't very comfortable or safe. I couldn't have driven at 40 weeks, I was huge and having constant Braxtons. Just being a passenger was uncomfortable enough once baby was engaged. So no, I wouldn't. Plus they might give you a sweep at 40 wks and the last thing you want to do after that is drive( trust me!).

StarsAboveYou · 25/11/2013 20:22

I drove until 40+11 and the only reason I didn't drie at 40+12 was my waters breaking through the night. Otherwise I'd have happily driven during the day before going in to be induced which was booked for 4pm.

Fingers crossed Storm

ZenNudist · 25/11/2013 20:28

Yes you're fine to drive to appt. by that stage you might want to take your dp/h for company/solidarity etc. if you're worried don't drive.

I don't remember getting to a certain point & stopping driving. I think I drove up to 41 weeks but don't remember. It's not like I was up to going out & about much.

Tobagostreet · 25/11/2013 20:32

Yes, I'd drive myself to an appt at 40 wks.

Drove to nursery daily to pick up DS1 until I was 41+1 wks pg.

On that last day, picked him up at 4:45pm and had DS2 at 11pm that night. I was not (to my knowledge) in labour whilst driving.

LateBear · 25/11/2013 21:01

Thanks for the feedback, I am happy to carry on driving, just thought I'd check my thinking, glad others feel the same way.
Zee lol at your friend driving in labour!
In some ways I prefer driving as I am in control and have the steering wheel to hold on to, almost feel like bump a bit exposed when I'm in the passenger seat.

I drove up until 12 hours before dd2 was born, looking back I was most probably in labour though never felt any contraction as dd was back to back, as went to bed and woke up having contractions and when I got to hospital 5 minutes away I was about 6/7cm dilated

TobyLerone · 25/11/2013 21:08

Of course I would.

Why wouldn't you? Confused
