This may be a silly question, but when do stretch marks start to appear? None as yet (at 27w), but keep checking (and slapping on all those lotions that do no good at all).

Would like to know the answer to this too - am 35 wks now and starting to hope I've got away without any! Never got around to using any creams.

tessasmum · 12/07/2006 11:43

If you are lucky not at all but its all in the genes. My mum went through 3 pregnancies, one with twins, and no stretch marks. I've had two and no stretch marks either.
Keep slapping the cream on though, it might not make much difference but it feels nice!

usandbump · 12/07/2006 11:54

Well I hate to say it but I am 9 days overdue and I didn't have any stretchmarks until a week ago! So far they are quite slight and on my thighs, but I must admit I was feeling very smug- serves me right

southeastastra · 12/07/2006 11:58

i only got them on my inner thighs too, don't forget to moisturise there!

puppy · 12/07/2006 12:39

I'm 30 weeks and they started to appear a fortnight ago, its already mentioned but not everybody get them the lucky so and so's.

milward · 12/07/2006 12:40

have lots of stretch marks & love them

Tutter · 12/07/2006 12:42

expected to get loads as i have some on hips, side of boobs etc from weight gain/loss in the past but i survived with not a mark on my tum. id did get through 2 bottles of the clarins stuff. no idea if it worked but would def use again.

BigSister · 12/07/2006 12:46

I think it´s commmon for them to appear in the last few weeks of pregnancy and is one of the reasons celebrities have early cesaerians...

I was told (too late for me) that you have to rub in the cream for about 10 minutes for it to have any affect. Of course, scientist types will say that it is the "inner" skin that stretches and gives you strtch marks, not the skin you rub cream into, so bothering with cream is a waste of time altogether...

ChaCha · 12/07/2006 16:45

I have stretch marks all over my tummy! I look like i've been clawed by a ferocious tiger, no joke! I also have a c-sec scar and have scars from 2 3 previous surgeries, think i'm past caring, DH doesn't mind so unless I'm planning on sporting an itsy bitsy bikini this summer i'm quite happy with my baby carrying trademarks [for now anyway]

ChaCha · 12/07/2006 16:46

not 23, 2 surgeries of one kind, 3 of another. sorry.

SpikeMomma · 12/07/2006 19:14

i've got um. came on my hips during pregnancy. but the crepe paper type (of which my mum has a few), appeared below my belly button the two weeks he was over due. brilliant.

they are not that bad, but took a while to get used to them. i thought i'd got away with it. but then i couldn't see under me belly! it was the itching that made me suspicious.

these super stars who don't have them really get on my wick.

Jaysecond · 12/07/2006 19:24

like others i didnt get any stretch marks till the last couple of weeks, they didnt look too bad when i was round and pregnant, when i had had DD though and my skin was less, shall we say 'taught' i noticed them. I used cream every morning and night from week 12, i was just destined to get them i feel!!

SophieB · 13/07/2006 09:18

my stretch marks started to appear around bout 25 weeks i think, im 30 weeks now, i keep putting on creams but they do not help! so much for trying to have a stretch mark free pregnancy! having said that they arent as bad as i thought they would be, luckily there arent any on my tummy! (yet!!)

Coolmama · 13/07/2006 09:21

you're genetically predisposed, unfortunately - creams and things can ease and soothe the itch, but generally if your mom had them, so will you.

Jaysecond · 13/07/2006 09:25

My Mum didnt get any!!!

sfxmum · 13/07/2006 09:51

i think its mostly genetic mum had 3 babies not much in way of stretchmarks sister had 2 and no stertchmarks, i have none after my first we all used various oils
best of luck its lovely to massage twice a day anyway

LadyTophamHatt · 13/07/2006 10:01

Mine didn't start to appear until I was on maternity leave with ds1, so after 36 weeks.

I applied cream every day without fail throughout the whole PG but still got them.

with ds2 I applied it occaisionally and got a few more.
with ds3 I did apply any cream ever an got a few more again.

My lower stomach now resembles a pair of austrian blinds but I really really don't mind and in fact I'm actually quite fond of my stretch marks.
Pg gain now and so I'm assuming I'll get more still.....

katierocket · 13/07/2006 10:07

It's genetic and there is nothing you can do to prevent them. I applied very expensive oil to my stomach for 9 months and still got them. They didn;t appear until around 38 weeks though.

janeggybee · 13/07/2006 11:18

just jumped in on this and am v. dissappointed to hear that said marks do not appear until very late i am 37 weeks and none as yet. i have been slapping on the creams morning and night and until now had considered myself lucky!!
i think the marks form when the skin stretches and shrinks quickly so getting them at the end would stand to reason (as baby gains half pound per week) we are also at risk of getting them post natally.

dressedupnowheretogo · 13/07/2006 11:37

mine appeared at 16 weeks and are along my inner thighs to my kness and my bump and pubic area of covered have rubbed no end of bio oil and cocoa butter and they are still angry looking

im 34+2 and they are still coming along my sides now

babyonboard · 17/07/2006 14:06

I got them on the backs of my knees of all places from around 25 weeks..none on my bump until 38 weeks when some pretty large wide ones came out of nowhere! like others though..I don't mind, and they have really shrank and faded now (ds is 7 months)

pol26 · 17/07/2006 14:20

My first pregnancy I had heaps and child I looked after (he was 4) asked if the baby had been scrathcing me,

This time tend to have gotten away with alot... have a few but not like last time.

Apparently the more water your skin is able to hold keeps it's elasticity and you get less...

it is genetic, I agree (although it's to do with your skin type so might come from your mum or your dad). You'll almost definately get them at some point if you got them in adolesence.

I have lots. I think of them as battle scars.

NotAnOtter · 17/07/2006 14:44

overnight usually and not till the end - the very end - sorry but thats my experience although i only have a couple - i still hate them!
