Hi all, has anyone else had gagging whilst brushing their teeth? I dread picking my brush in the mornings, it's so horrible! At night it's not so bad though which is strange. Can anyone help or suggest doing anything different?

Welcome to the world of throwing up frothy vomit Grin

It's pretty common. If you can't manage it, just try and use mouthwash, wipe your teeth clean etc. It shouldn't last too long so it's not the end of the world, just clean them when you can stomach it and try and make sure your breath is ok!

Try a different toothlaste. I am a lkfelkng fan kf all things minty but went off it completely when I was pg and that included my toothpaste.

Handbagsonnhold · 19/11/2013 20:23

It's truly vile Op .... Im exactly the same ....I'm sure my breath is just disgusting as I can barely brush....matches my greasy hair and spotty skin....Hmm

starfishmummy · 19/11/2013 20:23

Oh good grief.
Fat thumbs, sorry

MrsCharlieD · 19/11/2013 20:24

Yep i get this. its horrible. it also happens to me when i take my asthma inhalers. Isn't pregnancy lovely x

Handbagsonnhold · 19/11/2013 20:25

Ps I find it easier with small head on electric toothbrush and use mouthwash

mixi82 · 19/11/2013 20:27

Thanks for replies. I still enjoy minty stuff like minty Kitkats and things. I may try different toothpaste, see how that goes. I thought about just using mouthwash and perhaps brushing with no toothpaste then mouthwash again, is that going to be enough you think? It really is a struggle and I find myself gagging even picking up the toothbrush! Hope it goes away soon Confused

Nothing more depressing than throwing up, brushing your teeth, then throwing up again because of the toothpaste. by 7 months you might piss your pants too

Thankfully pregnancy doesn't last forever and babies are so gorgeous it is all worth it.

TippiShagpile · 19/11/2013 20:31

Oh god, I was exactly the same. Gagged every time I brushed my teeth when I was pg with ds1. Unfortunately it's stayed with me through pg with ds2 and beyond (8 years later..).

Dh says he can't be in the bathroom with me when I brush my teeth.

mixi82 · 19/11/2013 20:36

Oh no!! I really hope this is just a pregnancy phase, I feel for you. I have an appointment with GP tomorrow so will ask for advice too and pass it on if it's useful!

I sympathise, happened to me in every pregnancy I've had from 4 weeks to the end.

Try the smallest toothbrush head you can find, with a salty-tasting low-foam toothpaste like Corsodyl.

Failing that, toothbrush and water alone, followed by mouthwash (as suggested to me by my hygienist).

Then book a scale and polish for as soon after the birth as you can reasonably manage!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 19/11/2013 20:46

Oh this brings back some (unpleasant) memories! I basically couldn't brush my teeth with DD2 the entire pregnancy! I wiped my teeth with a towel and most days I could stomach dental floss though. Couldn't do mouthwash.

Doctorbrownbear · 19/11/2013 20:47

I am a little bit sick every time I brush my teeth at 34 wks...

nomoreminibreaks · 19/11/2013 20:53

I'm on day 239 (apparently) of my second pregnancy and have gagged every single time. I just have to stay close to the bathroom and not wander around the house otherwise people get sprayed with toothpaste. Smile

Katekate77 · 19/11/2013 21:14

Hehe. It's normal.

I always potter about when brushing my teeth. When I was preggers a used to spray rooms with toothpaste all the time. I was pouring tea once and sprayed the clean washing up on the draining board Hmm

Stay by the sink and think about something else Grin

Gah, sorry.
Minor thing that might help if it is fairly mild: stand up straight rather than bending over the sink taking slow deliberate breaths through your nose.

This won't work for a real pukey prego but might help someone with a mild version?

CiderwithBuda · 19/11/2013 22:23

I used t have too. Ended up almost choking one morning locked in the bathroom and had visions of DH coming home from working finding me dead n the floor!

I found having something to eat first helped. Even now though I still gag if I brush my teeth in th morning before a cup of tea.

Also I found brushing in stages helped. Almost one tooth at a time and then stopping and taking a few breaths.

mixi82 · 20/11/2013 10:40

Thanks for so many replies everyone! Seen GP this morning and she says perfectly normal and to try using those chewable toothbrushes? I have dentist on 28th Nov so will ask them about that, see if I can get some freebies! She also suggested eating beforehand then try brushing an hour or so after to let food settle, so will try that. Mouthwash made me gag this morning so that's not helping either :(

Same here unfortunately. I don't have morning sickness only brushing my teeth sickness! It's so grim especially when having nice clean teeth makes me feel half human in the mornings!

Actually even writing about it makes me feel a bit sick!

Seeline · 20/11/2013 10:56

Tippi - I thought I was the only one! My DS is 12 in a couple of weeks and I still gag when cleaning my teeth. Hoped pg 2 would stop it but she's 91/2 now Grin

mixi82 · 20/11/2013 19:09

Flixy, that's the same for me! No morning sickness, just the teeth thing. Doc said it'll probably last throughout pregnancy so i hope I'll find a way around it soon, got a long way to go yet :)

Same here unfortunately. I find brushing my teeth first thing in the morning on an empty tummy works best. THere have been too many occassions where I have vomited up breakfast when I brush straight afterwards. I'm 28weeks and still no break in the clouds yet.
