Finding out the gender

Personally we have decided to find out the gender when we have our next scan on Friday IF baby co-operates will be 21+1

Have had mixed reactions when telling people we are finding out some saying it ruins the surprise

What are your thoughts?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

He could just have easily as seen girl bits as opposed to boy bits. Don't assume that just because there was 'something to see' it meant there was a willy in sight [ smile] At 12 weeks I would imagine his 'guess' would have been just that and certainly nothing to be relied upon anyway

I'll definitely be finding out. I don't have any preference but am just curious. Plus I want to start talking to the baby (only in my head or the privacy of my house :-)) using his/her name. Once we have chosen it, that is (another reason to find out earlier - to give yourself more time to agonise over the names!) I don't intend to do any of the gender stereotyping stuff though - no pink or blue outfits, no colour coordinated nursery or baby accessories.
I can't see how this can ruin anything. It's going to be a surprise anyway. And on the day there will be so much new, exciting things to take in that I don't think I'll want any extra surprises.
I also thought that finding out is especially good idea with your second as the elder child can get used to the idea of having a little brother/sister.
I think it is a very UK thing not to find out though. Same as not to share baby's name before it is born!

With DC1 we didn't find out. I desperate for a girl, yet never mentioned this to anyone not even DH. I 100% thought we're definitely having a boy, when they said its a girl. I was utterly utterly delighted and cried.

However if they said its a boy, I would of also be utterly delighted and cried Grin

DC2 due in Jan, we found out this time as again I was desperate for another DD. It's a boy. I haven't cried, but i am disappointed as I would of loved for DD to have a sister I grew up in a house of boys part of me wishes we hadn't found out, however part of me is glad as I was again convinced it was a girl.

Clearly I am utter rubbish at guessing genders!

Oddly I always wanted just 2, now we are having a boy I'm really keen to have DC3 so can have another girl!
Friends are surprised as 'I'll have 1 of each and this is perfect' I do not subscribe to that load of tripe

I know our DS will be amazing, and I'm looking forward to meeting him and in no doubt in years to come he'll be terrorising his sister.

agree with others it def dont ruin it ive had 3 babies and found out with all of them my 3rd just 10 days old was a boy after 2 girls i was overjoyed when they told me its a boy Grin

BlackholesAndRevelations · 14/11/2013 20:17

I was overjoyed when I found out dc2 was a boy. He's bloody wonderful!

I didn't find out with DC1 - not sure why - preferred to delay it.

I have done with this one though - I just was overcome with curiosity and as soon as I could find out I did. I'm far too busy this time round to have to think of two sets of names.

Besides it's not THAT MUCH of a surprise is it? It's a boy OR a girl - hardly the stuff of shock revelations

I'm 23 weeks, had a scan 2 weeks ago and we didn't find out. I was surprised that I wasn't even a bit tempted.

I found out with my last pregnancy but not my first. We have a boy and a girl and I think this one is another girl. I am looking forward to having a surprise this time.

I'm a convert!
With the first 2 we didn't find out, and they were lovely surprises.
This time around its been a rough ride. The nanny has some issues and we had some tough decisions to make which meant that for a while we were quite detached from the pg.
After a CVS we found out the gender, she's a girl, Smile and its been wonderful! I personally I am so glad we know. It's brought her sharply back into focus, she has a nickname and she's very much a person already, IYSWIM. Looking back I'd have found out the other times if I'd known how special knowing was.

the BABY has some issues! Confused
