Hi, I'm asking for an elective csection with my 2nd baby.

Just wondered how many weeks is usual for them to do it assuming there are no major concerns for mum or baby's health, do they do it as close to your due date as possible or a bit earlier?

Hi I was 39 weeks Smile

cherrycherry41 · 08/11/2013 21:12

39+1

cathpip · 08/11/2013 22:09

Most NHS trusts will not section you till your 39th week, I was 39+2 with last baby and will be about the same with this one.

Mellowandfruitful · 08/11/2013 22:12

My consultant said he would rather leave it as late as possible and booked it for 39 weeks. What actually happened was that complications arose and they moved it earlier, but that was fairly easy to do as I was in the system already as being booked for a section IYSWIM. All turned out fine in the end and it was a good experience. So rest assured that they can bring you in earlier if there seems to be a need for it near the end.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 08/11/2013 22:14

39 weeks. They won't do it earlier unless there is a medical need in my area.

Foxeym · 08/11/2013 22:14

I've had 2 ELCS and they were both done at 39+1 :)

Mintyy · 08/11/2013 22:15

39+2, it was a Monday. They wouldn't book it in for 39+0 because that was a Saturday.

TiredFeet · 08/11/2013 22:16

Mine is booked for 39 +2 (due date falls on a Saturday).

Featherbag · 08/11/2013 22:18

I'm booked for mine on the 21st, which will be exactly 38 weeks. They had initially said 39+, but I asked for a little earlier due to SPD. The consultant agreed with no argument if I consented to steroids 4 days beforehand.

Whybeige · 08/11/2013 22:28

Ds3 & ds4 both at 38wks for high bp. Steroids only for ds3.

LittlePeaPod · 08/11/2013 22:33

Hi Op I am 32 weeks and I am having an ELCS. According to my consultant obstetrician, the current guidelines are that ELCS are done on or after 39 weeks unless there is a ethical reason which requires early delivery. The reason for the 39 weeks is to ensute baby's lungs are ready to Coe on their own.

LittlePeaPod · 08/11/2013 22:34

That should be medical reason and not ethical reason.. Grrrrrr IPad auto text!!

phlebas · 08/11/2013 22:44

had 3 electives at 38, 37 & 37 weeks - had steroids with the 37 weekers (I've also had an emergency section which was done at 36 weeks). I'n my case it was more dangerous to leave them in any longer (had no breathing problems at all with any of them).

Goldmandra · 08/11/2013 22:46

38 weeks because of gestational diabetes. No steroids.

Slavetominidictator · 08/11/2013 22:46

39 + 2. I was told it was the first day your consultant has his operating day after you're 39 weeks. I felt a little bit odd that this is how my baby's birthday was decided for a few seconds and then remembered to worry about more important things. Good luck.

You'd be lucky to find one doing it before 39 weeks.

Mine was 38+2, for several medical reasons. I have the same reasons this time and they probably won't go any sooner than that again.

salvadory · 08/11/2013 23:35

41 weeks to give me chance to go naturally (I did not want to be induced, so had ELCS), healthy 9lb DD, no complications, quick healing time and 2 nights in hospital.
Much better than my EMCS with DD1, two years prior.

InTheRedCorner · 08/11/2013 23:38

38 weeks with all 3

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 08/11/2013 23:45

Like salvadory, I chose to have a CS after gel failed to progress me far enough to start the Pitocin and I didn't want them to rupture my membranes. I was at least 41 weeks.

CocktailQueen · 08/11/2013 23:47

39 weeks.

BumPop · 09/11/2013 00:40

Haven't read thread, but I was 37 6 in NZ. DS2 was same size as a DS1 at 42 and whilst DS1 had complications galore via emcs. elcs all the way here.

kiwee · 09/11/2013 06:10

38+4 (again in NZ)

takeitonthegin · 09/11/2013 06:40

I'm expecting DC3 and have had a c-section (breech baby) before and a CBAC. I know that you can opt for a section now (this is new from when i had my last baby). I was hoping to have a c-section this time, my first midwife appointment is on monday.

Are sections offered as usual practice now or do you have to 'put a case forward' so to speak. Will I need to give reasons?

Just wanted to prepare a bit. Smile

takeitonthegin · 09/11/2013 06:41

Oh and to add I was 37 weeks with DC1 but the section was for medical reasons.
