When you start to have the odd drink once pregnant? I've only had the occasional sip of someone else's so far but am home alone tonight and there's a bottle if red staring at me! I'm 17 weeks

Caip, I'm in Switzerland... just thought I'd mention that the at the Christmas markets the non-alcoholic Gluhwein is actually really good, and the line isn't nearly as long. Just in case it's an alternative you fancy Smile

Sounds fine to me. I generally got impression from articles I've seen that worst time would be between 4 and 12 weeks but just an impression.

I'm 25 weeks and haven't had anything yet but not telling myself I can't. It will depend on when a drink I really like (anything sparkling probably) is on offer...

The other day I felt drunk after a bottle of fentimans lemonade but might have been my imagination. Have heard gas and air works better if you get your general tolerance really low by avoiding all intoxicants, but mright be a myth! Worked well for me last time.

I havent had anything to drink apart from half a champagne flute on my wedding day.

Its a small sacrifice to make i think on a mothers part, its only booze.

Op you sound very sensible.

Another one here very pleased to see Stilton is on the safe list :)

I cut alcohol out completely. For me, having 1 or 2 glasses a week is totally pointless as before pregnancy I liked to drink 1 glass with my meal every night. Its easier to go complete cold turkey IMHO.

Chocolatemolehill do you drink coffee as a matter of interest? Or consume aspartame in the many forms it comes in?

Some people think that both of those are actually a bigger risk than an occasional wine. And the nutritionist in me would tend to agree. There is NOTHING good in aspartame, whereas there is some good in wine- certainly in small amounts. Caffeine is a bigger (meaning more dense gram per gram) stimulant than alcohol and therefore likely to increase the babies heart rate- so for that reason i've given up my daily coffee. From 13 weeks on however i'll be having 1 glass of wine whenever i'm out- so once/maybe twice a week. Infact i cannot wait. I've actually booked myself and OH in for 'champagne afternoon tea' in the hotel we got married in to mark the 1st day of the 2nd trimester- cannot wait ! i'll savour that glass.

This is a divisive issue though of course, so everyone should do what they feel is right. I will enjoy my 1 or 2 glasses a week and will feel ZERO guilt while consuming them, that's for sure. Coffee though, for some reason, i feel more strongly about. It's just my gut instinct and i've learnt to trust my gut over the yrs!

Well the guidance has changed since I was first pg despite a lack of new evidence (afaik) At the time I was advised that a small glass of wine 3-4 times a week would be fine.

I was quite strict about the size of the glass (125ml) and would sip it over a whole evening and always with food so I reckoned the amount of alcohol in my bloodstream at any one time must have been tiny. Seemed ok to me as a once or twice a week treat.

With DD I had precisely four glasses of wine over the whole pregnancy - one on my birthday, one on Christmas Day, one on New Year's Eve and one when BiL opened a fabulous bottle of champagne specifically to celebrate my pregnancy!

This time around I've been a bit more lenient with myself and since 12 weeks have had a small glass if I fancy it - when we've had people round for a nice meal etc - once or twice a fortnight.

I keep smiling at the number of people who are so happy about the Stilton. I am happy about it too but had forgotten it used to be banned - can't remember well enough what cheeses were on banned list when I was pg with dd1.

Having read this I really wish I had some brandy butter!! I going to my parents' for Christmas and my Mum makes great brandy butter. Am going to bring Stilton and really good cheddar (black bomber or similar) if they aren't getting it anyway!
