When you start to have the odd drink once pregnant? I've only had the occasional sip of someone else's so far but am home alone tonight and there's a bottle if red staring at me! I'm 17 weeks

I had a large glass of red once a week after the first trimester. It was my sanity wine.

Steben · 08/11/2013 19:00

Prepare for lots of conflicting responses/opinions - I had red/white wine (only a glass) 3/4 times a week from 14 weeks with both pregnancies.

Hannahwillo88 · 08/11/2013 19:27

personally all in moderation the odd glass here and there will do no harm i was even told by a midwife when i went overdue with my first to go home have a curry and a couple of glasses of wine

MissCalamity · 08/11/2013 19:43

I would have a small glass.

In my first pregnancy I only had one wine spritzer when I was 20 weeks pregnant (plus it was my 30th birthday Grin

I've had a small lager a few weeks ago when I was 14 weeks pregnant on our last night of our holiday, and will have a glass of wine in a couple of weeks at my cousin's wedding.

All the alcohol in our house had gone by the time I got my BFP so I have no temptations in the house, but if I fancy a small glass when I'm at do's etc, I don't think I'll be refusing!!

Rockchick1984 · 08/11/2013 20:01

I've had the occasional glass after 14 weeks - wouldn't drink more than one, and wouldn't have it more than once a month, but don't have a problem for the occasional celebration / treat.

40WeekWait · 08/11/2013 20:25

I'm 21 weeks now. I didn't drink any alcohol at all for first 14 weeks (partly due to sickness!) and since then have had the total of 3 sips of wine, half a glass of prosecco and half a pint of cider and black. All of these were on separate occasions. It's definitely an issue you have to make up your own mind on.

PuppyMummy · 08/11/2013 20:44

I haven't had any alcohol since I found out I was pregnant, l wont be having anything until after baby is born.

Personal choice I guess

Strokethefurrywall · 08/11/2013 20:56

I have a glass of wine every week I guess. I usually save a nice glass for a Friday night or when we're out at happy hour. OBGYN orders, I shit you not.

Was halfway through a pint of wine when I tested and told him this, he laughed and said "if you want to continue enjoying wine you go right ahead. You're not an idiot, you're not an alcoholic. A couple of glasses of wine 2-3 times a week is fine." I was like this Shock - I don't even drink 2-3 times a week when I'm not pregnant let alone when I am!

First pregnancy I went totally off red wine and craved beer for some reason, this pregnancy I've been happy to drink wine and have enjoyed it. Some people go off it totally, others continue to have a glass or two throughout. Totally your choice.

I haven't had any alcohol since before pregnancy. We were TTC for a year prior so I only drank once a month during my period. I won't drink again until a few weeks after baby is born because if anything were to go wrong I'd immediately blame myself. I drank until I was tipsy once with ds1 and a big part of me blames his autism on that. Stupid I know but I'd like a clear conscience this time. Also, I look at it like a big detox.

Featherbag · 08/11/2013 22:23

I've just finished my twice-weekly glass of red, thoroughly enjoyed it! I'm 36+1 now and have indulged since 12/13 weeks. There's absolutely zero evidence whatsoever that this level of consumption could possible harm baby, but there is evidence that it's good for me!

Inglori0us · 08/11/2013 22:38

Once or sometimes twice a week I'll have a glass of wine, since 13 weeks. Been drinking 0% beer a lot too.
In my first pregnancy I drank very moderately from 13 weeks til around 33 weeks then I just didn't fancy it at all.

This is a summary of some interesting research by an economist, Emily Oster. m.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-23802785

Featherbag · 08/11/2013 23:21

Have been drinking gallons of Becks Blue though, as I've been craving lager like a mofo! Odd as I haven't liked lager since going off it at the start of my first pregnancy!

Littlebean13 · 09/11/2013 01:56

At my GP appointment at 6 weeks to tell them I was pregnant my GP actually said after the first trimester is over then one or two glasses of wine a week would be fine, just not to binge drink or over do it. I remember being quite shocked tbh I thought he would swear me off alcohol for the rest of my pregnancy! Although I am 24 weeks and I've not had any alcohol since, it's purely personal choice I think. If you fancy a weekly glass then have one and enjoy it, I'm sure when babies here you won't have much time to sit and quietly enjoy a nice glass of red!

SeeYouNT · 09/11/2013 10:45

i have not had one yet

but with my last dc i would have a glass of rose once a week, and dc was fine. i would have it half and half topped up with lemonade so felt like i was having two glasses Blush

alcohol is the thing i miss most when preg, is that really bad of me lol

annaban · 09/11/2013 10:55

I had no ideas was pregnant until 18 weeks, so was drinking 'normally' (although this did include a few binges) until that point... Absolutely far from ideal, but it appears to have made absolutely no difference to a very healthy, settled and easy going baby.

Please note - if I had known, I would have not drank so much, but in my experience, a glass or two should be fine!! Grin

hettienne · 09/11/2013 11:03

From second trimester in both pregnancies I have had a couple of units once a week (maybe a little more in the last few weeks). I am quite careful to make sure it is only a couple of units though - I have started buying those mini bottles of wine that state the units in them (usually 1.6 to 2.2 units) so I don't go over.

I believe research has not managed to identity any foetal alcohol effects in mothers who drank less than 8 units a week, so I reckon 4 units as a maximum is pretty safe.

Shellywelly1973 · 09/11/2013 11:09

There's a thread in Chat about drinking or not as the case may be.

I don't drink normally so pregnancy is no different. I had my 40th birthday when I was 22 weeks & will be pregnant at Christmas... obviously!

Chocolatemolehill · 09/11/2013 13:11

I realise I'm going to come across as preachy and a total bore but I just don't understand why people would drink while pregnant.
The research says it's not possible to establish exactly how much alcohol will cause harm. That's simply because conducting any such research would be unethical. But we know it's harmful. Exactly how harmful depends on the individual woman and baby (and even some babies of alcoholics turn out fine). But it is a risk. Drinking any amount of alcohol means risking your baby's health.
I'm sure nobody would consider giving any amount of alcohol to their newborn baby. The difference between this and drinking in pregnancy is that a foetus is much smaller (so the alcohol has bigger impact on it) and it's internal organs, including brain, are still developing so are more prone to negative effects of alcohol.
What's the point of going crazy about avoiding certain foods in pregnancy when the risks are tiny (like runny eggs and salmonella - how often does this happen??) but them wash down safe food with wine...
Don't get me wrong - I really like my drink and often sometimes drink more than the recommended amount for women. But now that I'm pregnant I won't be drinking any for the next months.

hettienne · 09/11/2013 13:23

Some people choose to avoid some risks, others don't. Using make-up, toiletries and cleaning products during pregnancy is a risk too - like alcohol difficult to determine how much of a risk - but I doubt many people (even the tee-totallers) choose to eliminate that risk.

I tend to think that the people who go crazy about runny eggs are the same ones who go crazy about alcohol though.

hettienne · 09/11/2013 13:26

Also worth remembering that our idea of what is a risk is cultural rather than a hard and fast fact - one friend of mine who is from another country thinks that avoiding some cheese is ridiculous but is horrified that pregnant women go anywhere near cats and don't get routinely tested for toxoplasmosis. Another friend from a different country would never eat fruit with skin on or berries while pregnant.

Chocolatemolehill · 09/11/2013 13:35

Not quite sure that mascara and wine pose the same threat :-)
We know that there is such thing as Foetal Alcohol Syndrome and how badly it can affect children - for life. But we don't know how much alcohol can cause it.

Chocolatemolehill · 09/11/2013 13:36

But of course you are right - it's up to individuals to decide how much risks they want to take with their kids.

hettienne · 09/11/2013 13:45

Of course we have no idea how much of a risk everyday chemicals are in pregnancy - we just know that the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gyneacologists advice pregnant women to avoid them to minimise the risk to their unborn children. I imagine if you really did want to avoid any risk with your kids you would stop using make-up, moisturisers, processed food, plastic containers etc during pregnancy too.

Chocolatemolehill · 09/11/2013 13:49

Get your point, lol :-)
For me alcohol is the only definite no in pregnancy. Everything else in moderation and with common sense.
Do they really advise you to avoid cleaning products? Like - altogether? Not very practical, not to mention hygienic :-)
