Confused - Cots, Cot Beds or Moses Baskets?

Hi,

I am feeling confused! I don't know whether to buy a cot, cot bed or moses basket. Can a newborn go straight into a cot and is it worth getting a cot or should I get a cot bed? If I get a cot, how long does the baby stay in the cot before it can go in a single bed?
We already have a single bed so I don't know which option to go for. We've also been lent a really large moses basket that is quite old - its been in the family a long time but it has a new mattress so is it alright to use this?
Thanks for any help/tips anyone can give me!

Not read whole thread, just thought I'd give my experiences. With DD we had a cot, and borrowed a moses basket - she hated it with a passion and was in the cot from 6 weeks.

So, learnt from the past, decided just to use the travel cot beside the bed for DS until he went into the proper cot... He hated the open space, and we ended up buying a crib from kiddiecare, which he loves.

I would stick with cot rather than cotbed if you already have a single bed.

I would say that if it is in good condition, take the moses basket, and buy a cot - if baby likes the basket, then all well and good, if not, no money is lost (mattress is cheap enough) and it can go into the cot.

well done Sami, another hammock convert. We could start a hammock fan club!!

Bought the whole caboodle: moses basket, cot bed, Amby Baby hammock. Dd rejected all of them and by 5 months, has been happily and exclusively sleeping with me in my king sized bed!

Thought I'd put a plug in for co-sleeping - since that was a completely foreign concept to me before dd was born.

I had a drop side crib for nighttime sleeping and then moved to a cotbed. I didn't have a moses basket for dd1 but bought one for dd2 - mostly used for daytime sleeping.

If you can beg/borrow stuff then do - but get new mattresses.

We had a 2nd hand moses basket from a friend, we used it for 3 weeks, then laid the moses basket in a cot bed for 2 weeks, then transfered ds to his cot bed at 5 weeks.
I probably wouldn't bother to buy a moses basket.

Ds is now 18 months and sleeping in a cot bed which I am thinking of taking the side off to see how he gets on, but still enjoying 'keeping' him in bed!

pram then cot at 3 weeks.

I'm currently using a moses basket and have a cotbed for when dd grows out of the basket.

I did wonder about what to get but couldn't fit a cotbed in our room and thought that a cot might be a bit of a waste of money as we are planning biggish gaps between babies and won't have that get one into a bed and then use the cot for the next one thing.

I have to say that I use the moses basket loads during the day as well as at night and have found it great value but dd is tiny and I can see that a larger baby might not settle in one so well.

Myrtle1 - haven't read all the replies but my advice is to start with a moses basket but progress to a cotbed.

We went from basket to 'ordinary' cot and DS is about to grow out of it at 18mo.

We'd have got a lot more/longer use out of a cotbed, I reckon.

If this is a vote thing - both of mine went straight into cots.

DS slept through from 9 weeks (7-7). DD was a different matter... [cough]

Now in cheap Ikea extending single beds.
