Confused - Cots, Cot Beds or Moses Baskets?

Hi,

I am feeling confused! I don't know whether to buy a cot, cot bed or moses basket. Can a newborn go straight into a cot and is it worth getting a cot or should I get a cot bed? If I get a cot, how long does the baby stay in the cot before it can go in a single bed?
We already have a single bed so I don't know which option to go for. We've also been lent a really large moses basket that is quite old - its been in the family a long time but it has a new mattress so is it alright to use this?
Thanks for any help/tips anyone can give me!

i just think it's a leap of faith, poppyflower. i found the website and it just seemed to make so much sense to me... plus practically everything else we had for the baby was handed down from generous chums that i just wanted to take one risk for myself and the baby. if it didn't work out i knew we had the offer of about thirty-five moses baskets to fall back on.

a clever mum friend of mine told me that if you can help the child to learn that it's far nicer to be asleep and cosy than it is to be awake but tired then you're halfway to having a good sleeper. tonight, for example, the baby was having her last feed and putting her hand out to stroke the hammock lovingly. fantastic.

Like claremow I love sleeping bags for babies. DD is now just over 4 months, and has just moved to her cotbed from a carry cot (moses basket size) She is a real wriggler, and sheets/blankets just don't stay on her. I'm also worried that she will turn around in her sleep and get her head caught under the covers (probably irrational, but anyway!). sleeping bags are ideal, cos she can wriggle to her hearts content, and I know she can't get caught under it and smother. result - happy baby, happy mum!

DH and I have now bought a standard sized cot and mattress from John Lewis - it was in the sale. The hammocks sound fantastic but didn't read your posts til after we'd bought cot! So we'll use cot to begin with and then eventually baby can have the single bed. Thanks for all your advice! MIL has bought us a grobag (2.5 tog) but I'm going to get some more. How many do you think I should get and should I go for the 2.5 tog? Baby is due end of September.

I'd get a moses basket for the first couple of months then baby can sleep wherever you are

DS came out of cot into bed at 2

DD is over 2 and still in cot

poppyflower · 09/07/2006 20:08

Can you take them back myrtle ?? Swap them for a hammock!!! Best move you'll make !

aitch71 · 09/07/2006 20:23

deep breaths, poppyflower, and step away from the computer. we've lost another one...

poppyflower · 09/07/2006 20:32

burstingbug · 09/07/2006 21:09

do you have a link for these hammocks?
just wondering incase my new baby turns out to be a pain in the bum sleeper like ds!

poppyflower · 09/07/2006 21:15

oh indeed I do, you might think them pricey, I don't think so. People also sell them on ebay. All in good condition and at a fraction of the price \link{http://naturesnest.co.uk \here}

poppyflower · 09/07/2006 21:18

Pricey indeed - however, they look fab! might have to sniff about for an ebay one. may have to suck up to dh too for the money

poppyflower · 09/07/2006 21:33

Do I ever. Honestly , you might think I'm a crazy hippy sort of mum. I'm so not. I have 5 children 7 and under and when I was pregnant with dd3 ( now 6 months) I knew that I had to maximise the amount of sleep I could get if I was not to have some kind of physical and mental breakdown from sleep deprevation. After so many kids I had all the equipment, had tried it all. Baskets, cots, cot bed, sleeping bags. You name it, I've got it. I had ready about these hammocks during a previous pregnacy but didn't feel I could justfy the outlay, I mean I had everything I needed already.
Anyway I saw that you could get them much more cheaply on ebay and trust me there's nothing to break, so second hand makes no difference, just in the price. So I got one and some fantasic swaddling socks called 'cosy cocoons' and I was away. What I have found is that it's not just the length of sleep at night but during the day as well. Babies are notorious for falling asleep at the breast/ bottle ,mum puts them down, seconds later baby wakes pissed off that they're lying on something hard and mum's gone. With these hammocks there is no hard surface and if baby stirs they bounce gently vertically , which mimics movement in the womb and either babe goes back to sleep or lies quite blissed out, not feeling lonely or vunerable. Oh dear I'm ranting. I don't often, it's just when I've found something that works this well I really want to share it so that other mums can have the sleep and rest they so badly need. Do check it out.

burstingbug · 09/07/2006 21:43

seen a few on ebay, also an american version that currently is working out to be about £60, that including the P&P but it's still got a lot of time left on it and 4 bids already.

melsy · 09/07/2006 21:47

So is it the £148 package one on the website? It seems miraculous . Dh says I cant have one !!! Well see if this babs doesnt settle of to sleep, hell be screaming for one at 3am . Although dd now nearly 3 loved her cocoon style jane carry cot. I have it all ready for babs no2 ,but very intrigued by this.

poppyflower · 09/07/2006 22:15

ebay ones go for an average of £100. What price would you pay for sanity, sleep and a happy, contented babe and mum? i'd say that's pretty priceless!! Keep nagging dh, good luck.

Really fab and eay to use, my DD loved them. I bought them from the American site, as although they have an English site it works out cheaper to have them sent from the States , even paying import taxes, and you get more choice.

aitch71 · 09/07/2006 22:32

well done, poppy, you seem to have drummed up some trade.
ladies, it does seem expensive but in my opinion it's worth every penny. you just have to believe...
thing is, you'll get given so much stuff when you have the baby that you might as well spend your own precious resources on a product that WORKS.
oh, anyway, i get a bit boring on how good the hammocks are, sorry...

aitch71 · 09/07/2006 22:41

incidentally, my friend's husband is a paediatrician and he saw the hammock yesterday and was very approving. of course he had pulled faces about it when i told him that i'd bought one, but he really rated it when he saw it. said, funnily enough, that they tried to recreate that sort of atmosphere for the premature babies in the neonate ward as it helped the babies grow better. also commented that my daughter was very strong for her age and size, and speculated that might be because of the hammock.
who knows?

mears · 09/07/2006 22:46

Haven't read replies but I had moses basket first time round which was fine. The best thing though was a swinging crib. Loved it totally. You could rock a baby to sleep that wasn't really neeing fed again. Longest my babies stayed in it was 4 months. Much better than a cot.

mears · 09/07/2006 22:49

crib like this

Swinging is the key

samijaime · 10/07/2006 10:43

Hi Everyone

My name is Sami and I have a Natures nest which is great all my friends were really envious as they all looked shell shocked through lack of sleep and have decided to buy for next baby.

it really is a marvelous product and I would not be without it, people say its expensive, but babies are in them from when they are born to a year and I heard from another mum whose baby is older that you can buy a heavy duty spring so babies can sleep in longer also its a travel cot.

A small price to pay for a longer sleep for all and a happy baby when they wake, would love to hear more comments.

munz · 10/07/2006 10:55

not red the replys but we had a cradle/swinging crib which my graddad made for me and DB when we were small. it's at bed level as well which is handy! lol. now the boy's in a cotbed in his own room as the cradle started to get too small. with both thou i've put a towel rolled up next to both sides of him and he's swaddled. 95% of the time he sleeps really well - well as well as I can expect (6 hours ish) at a time b4 wanting a feed.

Joey was in the cradle till 16 weeks. then into his big boy bed! lol. I loved it by the bed cos it was the right height for me to lay in bed and stick my arm out to gently rock him to sleep, althou I didn't have to get up/out of bed to settle him, just lean over.

(we got a new matress and grandad re did the bottom base bit for me as well). re the cotbed - we chose that as then we wouldn't need to get a new bed till he was poteintially 4/5 althou will probably look for another one around 3.5-4 depending on when he gets too big.
