Heartburn help

Madratlady · 15/10/2013 20:42

I've had horrible heartburn for 24 hours non stop now, it stopped me getting to sleep last night and it's so uncomfortable!

Is there anything that's safe to take in pregnancy that'll make it go away?

gaviscon, rennies, etc can be used. My sister used to get gaviscon prescribed and at times just used to slug it straight out the bottle

GreatJoanUmber · 15/10/2013 21:33

I'm sitting here munching on my Rennies as I write. Have had heartburn for 2 weeks straight now, it's not nice!! Drinking milk seems to soothe it a bit too, and have Rennies/Gaviscon on you wherever you go (and some on your bedside table if you wake up in the middle of the night with it).

everythinghippie29 · 15/10/2013 21:44

Rennies and apparently milk (although I can't stand milk myself). Try and sleep in an upright position if possible!

I'd say make sure you keep up your liquids though as chalk tablets/rennies can, ahem, back you up depending how far along you are! Smile

Feel better soon.

Madratlady · 15/10/2013 21:47

I think we have some Gaviscon tablets in the 'drawer full of random stuff,' if they are ok I'll go take one.

I on't like milk but I had a yoghurt to see if that helped. It didn't but at least it was a nice yoghurt.

Go to your GP or mention it to the midwife. They can prescribe you ranitidine or omeprazole which will reduce it drastically.

terilou87 · 15/10/2013 21:50

Don't know why but milk always cleared mine for about 10 mins them it was back worse than ever, rennies worked for me and a friend of mine recommended eating bananas that seemed to work too, hope it passes soon x

Madratlady · 15/10/2013 21:51

I'll mention it to the midwife on thursday then.

I don't like bananas either though.

Chewing gum used to help me. I get the curiously strong gum from M&S
Yogurt helped too

Madratlady · 15/10/2013 22:02

Have just discovered that gaviscon is disgusting!

Love hearts or refresher sweeties are worth a try, only thing that helped me

Featherbag · 15/10/2013 23:46

Ranitidine is awesome, I was going through 2 large bottles of Gaviscon a week (with very little effect) until I discovered it - just got my GP to prescribe it, so it's free now too!

grants1000 · 15/10/2013 23:53

Ginormous bottle of Gaviscon ( which you can get on prescription) on your bedside table, which you can swig at random throughout the night as required. Like peppermint gloop, THE only thing that helped me.

rascal1979 · 15/10/2013 23:59

How far are you madratlady? Where is the pain?

IneedAsockamnesty · 15/10/2013 23:59

Don't know why but milk always cleared mine for about 10 mins them it was back worse than ever

Because milk is fatty and fatty food/drinks make heartburn worse. But some other stuff in it will relive very temporarily.

Another useful nighttime tip is lay on your left side prop head and shoulders up with two pillows, sounds odd but really can help.

rascal1979 · 16/10/2013 00:02

Sure it is just heartburn but I had horrid heartburn at 30+6 weeks and posted on here. It literally saved my and my daughters life as I had Severe Pre-eclampsia/HELLP syndrome.

Don't want to be alarmist at all but please do get checked out with it lasting so long

Pinkbell123 · 16/10/2013 08:13

I've had heartburn my whole life due to a faulty stomach valve and an autoimmune condition. Everyone's different but these are some things that have helped me:

  • gaviscon! The liquid is by far the best I think as it gives a nice coating
  • mints or peppermint tea help
  • lightly fizzy drinks as they can help to relieve the pressure iykwim. I like hot water mixed with lemonade the best but it is a bit grannyish
  • diet coke helps me a fair bit
  • avoid too much spicy or greasy food, especially in the evenings
  • don't eat too close to lying down
  • don't have anything too tight around the middle, take your bra off at home Grin

Omeprazole can help loads. I usually take lansoprazole but that's not allowed in pregnancy. I think omeprazole is fine but one of those where you need to weigh up the benefits/ untestedness

Good luck, hope it gets better for you x

Madratlady · 16/10/2013 22:33

It's OK Rascal I've had low blood pressure so far (26+5) and the heartburn has gone off a lot now. I have a midwife appointment in the morning anyway so I'll have my BP checked then.

Getting fish and chips for tea is probably something I'll regret later though.

Had such a bad time of this with LP. I was fixed by some strong probiotics from H&B, complete relocation, fixed heartburn, constipation, indigestion and bloating

MrTumblesKnickers · 16/10/2013 22:37

Omaprazole. Saved my life! I don't get any heartburn at all now. Rennies, Gaviscon etc only worked for me for about ten minutes and then it was back. It's so debilitating.

ELR · 17/10/2013 18:29

What a lovely story rascal!

Lj8893 · 17/10/2013 18:53

I'm nearly 39 weeks and have awful heartburn/acid indigestion. I've had it since about 24 weeks.

I started off with gaviscon which worked well but then that stopped working.

I then used ranitidine which didn't work well enough for me.

I then started using bisodel which work well for me, I eat them like sweets!!!

Rennie works well too.

CrispyFB · 17/10/2013 20:32

Omeprazole changed my life when it got utterly horrific at just 7 weeks. This is my seventh pregnancy and I never had a problem with it before, this time out, wtf? Anyway, if I'm even a few hours late with my omeprazole, the hot poker comes back.

Rennies, Gaviscon, milk, rantidine.. none of them touched it.

If it seems like it's likely to stick around for more than a few days it is definitely worth seeing if you can get omeprazole from your GP.

Glad it has settled - these threads always catch my eye!

LouisaJF · 17/10/2013 22:36

Love Hearts were a winner for me too I was also advised to try tonic water and that really helped.
