Hyperemesis Support

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable for sufferers, with information about medications, coping strategies, hospital admissions, useful links, advice for family members, and much more.

I would like to thank MOH and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

Pantsonastick Welcome, sorry you feel so vile - I'm shocked the doctor reduced you to tears, that was really unprofessional going on about that old tragedy, and cyclezine has been proven safe for decades. Many of the women here have to take a cocktail or be in hospital all the time, they'd be vomiting so much. If you need something stronger, is there a nicer doctor you could see? Have you got the kesostix from a chemist to check you don't become too dehydrated? This link
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/treatments/obtaining-treatment-1
should provide some reassurance. Everyone's very supportive of each other on here, for sure you have come to the right place.

pantsonastick what a dumbass doctor. def. see another one, cyclizine is the 1st level of med, you can get a lot stronger, and totally safe. loads of research out there.
the medical community really don't give a shit about HG and the life ruining suffering involved.

ChaffinchOfDoom · 16/11/2013 17:45

I ve done my best to educate all of my friends LOL

when I said Hyperemesis Gravidarium to a mum from school she thought I was doing a Harry Potter spell Grin

Meerka · 16/11/2013 18:04

welcome pants. I'm so sorry you have such a dreadful doctor. Does she also remember the days when people died from HG? Oh, she dind't notice that? (sorry, I'm feeling hormonal and out of patience with medical stupidity). But the drugs are there for a reason - becuase they save lives. And make other lives more endurable because we who go through it know how much HG saps life, enjoyment and endurance. So you go ahead and take what you need of the safe drugs - some of these have been used for decades and a giant study in Denmark recently showed that thousands of women have used even the most powerful drug with no effect on the child.

Lucinda's site is excellent and has a lot of good hints on things that some people can tolerate, at least some of the time. They really are good folk there. Do hope you don't get worse and can manage to keep going.

doomfinch you made me laugh, after a very disappointing day when I wasnt well enough to see our son go to Sint Klaus' arrive. Thanks!

eggybrokenoff · 16/11/2013 18:37

meerka that is just what i was going to say - people died from this. terrible the way some gps behave it really is

Pantsonastick · 16/11/2013 19:49

Thankyou all for your kind words. Worst thing was it was an emergency doctor that I saw cos I had been throwing up continously for over 24 hours. No fluids were staying down so was getting a bit concerned. When I was pregnant with dd my midwife expressed concerns cos I wasn't keeping fluids down then so she made the doctor give me metoclopramide.
I told the emergency doctor all this but she checked my urine and said there were no signs of dehydration so she wasn't concerned and then gave me all the crap about tablets and thalidomide. My dh said I took it too personally but I don't think so. Got the impression that she would rather I was admitted to hospital than give me anything. She also said she didn't understand why I was given the metoclopramide as its not one thats used which made me feel worse. What's wrong with these people.
Lol Harry Potter

Sorry seems to have gone on twice

Meerka · 16/11/2013 19:54

pants, these are the NICE clinical guidelines links that all doctors are supposed to follow. Info on safety and the need to minimize the impact on life from excessive morning sickness:

general + Quality of life: cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!topicsummary

quote"Early treatment with an anti-emetic is likely to be more effective and is essential to improve the woman's quality of life, symptoms, and reduce morbidity to the fetus." my bolding

Meerka · 16/11/2013 19:58

Your doctor is wrong about metoclopramide though it is not the first line of meds usually given.

Thalidomide was fifty or sixty years ago and the testing procedures now are far stricter. It would never get through. In truth if you're talking about ondansetron a huge study has shown it to be safe for the baby until it is born, but long term effects (more than 10 years) are not known though so far (up to 10 years) there've been no known problems. However, sometimes you have to make an informed decision about the relative risks and ondansetron is the drug of second-to-last resort, not the first. Nor the second, nor the third.

Dear god, an hour's research on the net gives more reliable and very medically respectable info than some of these doctors have after years of training at med school.

Pantsonastick · 16/11/2013 20:28

Thankyou meerka. Im really pleased I found this thread.Nobody really understands unless they've been through it and its hard when you feel so rubbish. Especially cos we had been trying for a while for a second which everyone knew about. So its the attitude of you wanted another so get on with it sort of thing. I really did want another but have to admit I have said to dh that I think we've made a mistake when Ive had to have a lie down just cos I've had a shower! Definitely no more after this one!

LucindaE · 17/11/2013 08:52

PantsMeerka Chaffinch and Everyone This was the old attitude which was still persisting when these threads started - women used to be allowed to get so ill that they had to be admitted for emergency IV fluids and medication and only then did the GP's prescribe cyclezine, say, and refuse anything else, so often they were back in hospital several times before they got Ondansetron; this though it seems research shows that early treatment helps keep the illness from becoming quite so severe.
Chaffinch Love that description!
Hope things are not too bad today. Livingzuid is very quiet...

Morning ladies

Urg, still feeling awful. No meds at all is not easy. Didn't sleep a wink again last night as the pain in my hips and legs is unbearable.
Mum is coming over to help out today, however I don't know if this is a good thing or not. She can be hard work and I'm really not up to it.
Dh has landed in Hong Kong so the countdown till he's home again begins.

Made some root veg soup yesterday so I'm going to try that today. Strangely I really fancy sucking on lemon!
Hoping for a sick free day with no hospital visits. Ive not been out of the place for more than 2 consecutive days lately.

Hope your all coping the best way possible. Wondering how fee, Jen and choc are doing xxx

jenpatnim · 17/11/2013 11:46

Hey I'm here, just with not much to report. Still nauseated, still tired. Some achyness in legs/hips but nothing too bad. We have been working on the nursery all week and it is starting to come together, which is exciting, and the nameless wonder has been kicking up a storm. Only 5 more weeks of work (25 teaching days, and yes, I AM counting) and I can't wait to be off. I have been keeping up with the thread and seeing how you are all doing. It is a shame to see so many new people... this thing is horrible. But on the other hand, I am glad that we have this resource, it has been enormously helpful to me.

Sally, big hugs - you are having such a tough time. Thinking of you xx

LucindaE · 17/11/2013 17:40

Sally Oh dear, you've had to go to hospital every day this week and sorry about pain and OH is away again?
Jen Roll on five weeks...You somehow managed to totter back to work just after you'd been really ill, I thought you'd be back in bed, but somehow you kept going.
xx

ChaffinchOfDoom · 17/11/2013 18:34

Im ok thanks

been managing this week on 2 tablets per day, just missing lunchtime, and worked today so instead have missed the dinnertime one, may take it now though as no time for vomming in the morning..

feekerry · 17/11/2013 18:39

hello ladies!!.
thought i would drop in and say hi. how are we all doing??
sorry to see you are in and out of hospital like a yo yo sally. you have had the shitest time ever. soon over for you tho. the relief you will feel will be massive.
Jen jealous of your 25 days to go!!! how many weeks are you when you finish then?
i was originally due to finish at 37 weeks but have had to reassess as i actually think i will die if i work till then.
my pelvis is packing in, my bump looks like a football and feels like one and i generally look and feel like poo.
not so bad on the sickness front but suffer yucky heartburn type sicky stuff. leg cramps at night....blah blah blah...
i think generally i am one of those people who pg just doesn't suit..at all.
down to half an ondandsatron a day. (don't ask how i manage to halve one of those tiny pills) and i must say the toilet relief is a massive bonus!!xxxxx

jenpatnim · 17/11/2013 18:46

fee, I'll be 32 weeks when I finish, but 34 when maternity leave officially starts, once you take the holidays into consideration. End of term (and work for me ) is 20th December....

LucindaE · 17/11/2013 19:05

Feekerry I am sure you look marvellous! That residual heartburn is literally a pain. Thirty seven weeks was very brave.
Chauffinch Glad you are not to bad...
Superlambanana and Boboli I hope you saw my comments about work below? I jsut don't know how people keep going.
xx

feekerry · 17/11/2013 19:29

nice one Jen.
i will be finishing at 35 weeks now lucinda which is a week earlier than last pregnancy but i am just exhausted by 5pm.
don't get me wrong, being at work is probably easier than being at home with my dd but as least i can do things at my own pace... nap when she does etc. so i figure i might as well finish work a couple of weeks earlier and dd will still be in childcare most of the day so will get a precious few weeks to myself. bliss.
i have also suffered alot from recurring thrush recently which is vile..didnt have that last pg!

Boboli · 17/11/2013 20:37

thanks Lucinda - I did. The thing is I'm not into HG territory yet - just can't eat anything in the evening but I feel absolutely awful. My DH and DM want me to sign off sick but the next couple of weeks are crucial at work and I can't just leave my team in a mess. I'm hoping I'll be able to take it easier nearer to xmas and when I'll probably getting worse.
I did keep going in my last pregnancy and ended up in hospital as a result so I won't be getting to that stage again, no job is more important!
How wonderful to see the end of work in sight - hope the last few weeks goes quickly for you all x

SicknSpan · 17/11/2013 21:04

I don't feel too bad today. Just a touch of nausea. 12 weeks tomorrow

Hyperhelpmum · 17/11/2013 23:14

Just popping on to say that baby Paloma (Lola) Francoise was delivered by elective section on tues 12th weighing a healthy 8lb 4oz despite 3 hospital admissions, weeks in bed and on meds and then constant nausea and heartburn until delivery. I was really sick the whole afternoon/ evening of her delivery but then felt great until......today, day 5. Nausea returned with a vengeance. Not sure why - tiredness, hormones? Any advice? Am I doomed forever? Sorry to be voice of doom! She is gorgeous though !

MurderOfGoths · 17/11/2013 23:27

sick That's good news :)

hyper Aww congrats Grin Wonder if there's a hormone surge at that point? Hope it eases soon. That's a lovely name btw.

Tallyra · 18/11/2013 07:18
