So this is born from my sil insisting that she will ride her very scatty dressage mare when she's pregnant. Each to their own but I've been told by more than a few ob-gyns and midwives that it's not safe due to the risk of falling and above 12 weeks - placental abruption.

For me, I stopped skiing the minute I found out (gutting, I was in the middle of a month's bloody ski holiday!). I'm 36 and have been trying to conceive for so long, maybe if I was younger I'd have been less paranoid.

What have you ladies given up or not given up?

I don't like the white being snotty. Has to be well done. Runny yellow but though.... Grin

I'm missing having a tidy lady garden. I tried to 'attend' to it a while back but nearly chopped off a labia. :S

Aren't you supposed to give up everything? Yesterday I ate some liquorice, then stupidly decided to look up whether I was suppose to eat it on the internet...I really wish I hadn't!

Rather helpfully, my aversions have been towards tea, coffee and chocolate, so I haven't had a cup of cha for about 4 weeks. But in terms of what I've given up, the things I miss are; pepperoni, goats cheese and alcohol. I also rather like smoked salmon and although it says in my book 'What to eat when you're pregnant' that you can eat it, I've decided not to.

Because I suffered a M/C last year, I'm also being cautious with exercise...

Xenadog · 03/10/2013 18:35

I have given up: pate, cocktails, alcohol in all forms except for one glass of wine at about 15 weeks, soft and blue cheeses, chorizo, shell fish and have very much limited my caffeine intake.

I found out I was pg about 4 weeks before my 40th birthday so I had a dry birthday too even though DP wanted me to have at least one glass of wine to celebrate. I did have a couple of sips but hated the taste. We then went to the Dorchester for a champagne afternoon tea and I had non-alcoholic cocktails.

I didn't realise about shellfish to begin with and ate loads of scallops on a gourmet break in Devon - then got told off by the MW! oops!

Ah feck can i not have goats cheese? i bought a big log about 2 hours ago and was looking forward to it.

I also got some decaff coffee, oh my it's lovely

Am looking forward to 13 weeks, I will have a glass of beer every Friday night from then on.

PinkWitch803 · 03/10/2013 19:16

You can have goats cheese as long as it is pasturised

PinkWitch803 · 03/10/2013 19:21

You can eat most stuff as long as it has properly cooked, or properly frozen including soft cheeses like brie, shelfish, fish, cured meats like chorizo ( in a rissoto or stw for example)

Even soft boiled eggs are allowed, but try to get the whites properly cooked and make sure they have the lion stamp.

Also, caffeine free tea and coffee isn't horrendous. Just needs a little more brewing than mormal.

Xenadog · 03/10/2013 20:09

Caffeine free tea is quite nice once it's been allowed to brew. I just wish there was a definitive list about what you can and can't eat/drink but different web sites and books all say different things.

Quodlibet · 03/10/2013 20:12

You can have shellfish too if it is cooked. Am right this minute cooking myself a nice seafood paella...

ChocChaffinch · 03/10/2013 20:16

I'm sure I've eaten more tuna than I was supposed to, one portion a week isn't it? I had 3 one week, it was the only damn thing I fancied, with hyperemesis you have to just eat what you fancy

BummyMummy77 · 03/10/2013 21:10

Living in the States with the over jealous health nuts is great as the de caff stuff is identical. I drink Twinnings Earl Grey and can't tell the difference between de caff and normal. Although dh says that's because it tastes like piss anyway.

Also, for the first time here, I'm glad of their shitty cheeses. At least they're all pasturised!

I only heard about the peanut butter thing recently, I've been eating JARS off the stuff. I'll feel so bad if ds is allergic.

I'm 35 weeks and miserable so I'm having my weekly treat of a FULL FAT COKE.

The evidence on peanuts is extremely mixed. The reason that the NHS now doesn't routinely advise avoiding it is because some studies suggest that may increase the risk of allergies.

Xenadog · 03/10/2013 21:42

I have eaten peanut butter all the way through and I'm glad it's one thing I CAN eat!

BummyMummy77 · 03/10/2013 22:01

Oh FOR THE LOVE OF GOD why can't health advice be consistent!

Trying to research it in the States and the only sites and info that comes up seems to be from the UK. The stuff I have seen seems to poo poo any connection with allergies.

Good because I ate half a jar with a spoon at 3am.

Peanut butter is fine too. There is even recommendation to eat a spoonful a day to boost your protein intake.

missmargot · 04/10/2013 07:38

I was told peanuts were an issue if either you or the father had asthma or allergies as it increases the chance of a nut allergy in the baby. I get bad hayfever and my husband is asthmatic so I've been steering clear of anything with peanuts.

GillyBillyWilly · 04/10/2013 07:46

It might have already been mentioned but can I ask about hair dye please?

I'm very early on in my pregnancy ... 5 weeks!
Haven't had my highlights and colour done for months as I've been saving myself for my appointment next week (2 days before I'm being a bridesmaid for my best friend)

To dye or not to dye? My hair is a mess so I really want to colour it.

Probably best to put a block colour over it so I don't need to worry about doing highlights again for the whole pregnancy but my sister said not to risk it.... Blush

AnythingNotEverything · 04/10/2013 07:49

Hair dye is fine, but the colour may take differently. It might also be worth doing a patch test in case you've developed a sensitivity due to pregnancy.

TobyLerone · 04/10/2013 08:23

I was told peanuts were an issue if either you or the father had asthma or allergies as it increases the chance of a nut allergy in the baby.

I was told this in 1999, but triple-checked with my MW this time and she said the advice has changed now. I've been asthmatic all my life and have a lot of allergies, although none to food. MW said that the advice now is to carry on eating nuts if you want, because they're really good for you, unless you have a specific nut allergy. Like you'd eat them if you did Hmm

Re hair dye, definitely do a patch test. Your skin may be way more sensitive and you could really damage your skin (or worse). A hairdresser wouldn't colour your hair without a patch test.

amber381 · 04/10/2013 08:34

Have not given up any food or drink (just limit the wine) but try to avoid housework and exercise ;)

GillyBillyWilly · 04/10/2013 09:35

Hi Toby!!!!!!!!! Smile
Long time... Hope you're doing well.
So hair due isn't unsafe for the baby? I'm worried!

GillyBillyWilly · 04/10/2013 09:35

It's gillywillywoo by the way... Slight name change! Grin

Lostinspace1 · 04/10/2013 09:53

On a slightly different note, I've changed to organic shower gel, face cream, shampoo and conditioner (even though it leaves my hair like straw). Also use organic deoderant, but its rubbish so use the normal stuff when out and about.

Bought a turbo trainer to cycle on.......and it's spending a lot of time unused behind the sofa...

TobyLerone · 04/10/2013 10:14

Gilly! You graduated! Congratulations Flowers :o

God, pregnancy is bad enough without denying ourselves all the good shit.

itsaruddygame · 04/10/2013 12:47

I rode until 20 weeks - sensible horse though. The riding related risk is just in case of falling - in fact riding itself is good exercise and great for your pelvic floor which stood me in good stead for the second half of pregnancy!

Other than that gave up most of the banned food list apart from runny eggs which I ate towards the end of pregnancy when I no longer felt sick as a dog!

BummyMummy77 · 04/10/2013 14:23

They used to say hair dye wasn't safe. Now they say it is. Probably. I'd go with 'safe'. :)

So at dinner last night I had the tiniest glass of red wine (which once a week I'm doing and I'm totally giving it credit for my bloods coming back sky high in hemocrit and haemoglobin and all the good stuff blood should have) and yet again I get chastised by a total stranger. No less than a 16 year old girl this time!

Is it like that in the UK? I remember going out with pregnant friends, them having a beer or a glass of wine and not getting abused by random strangers.
