So this is born from my sil insisting that she will ride her very scatty dressage mare when she's pregnant. Each to their own but I've been told by more than a few ob-gyns and midwives that it's not safe due to the risk of falling and above 12 weeks - placental abruption.

For me, I stopped skiing the minute I found out (gutting, I was in the middle of a month's bloody ski holiday!). I'm 36 and have been trying to conceive for so long, maybe if I was younger I'd have been less paranoid.

What have you ladies given up or not given up?

I've given up alcohol, apart front the odd very weak shandy on birthdays etc. No soft cheeses unless they've been baked for ages, no long walks as my physio says my hips won't take it Sad I do miss those.
And yesterday I was slapped on the wrist by a well meaning old lady in a shop for reaching above my head for something on the top shelf, apparently in my condition my arms should never be above my head Hmm
She knocked the packet off the shelf with her walking stick instead Grin

TobyLerone · 03/10/2013 09:50

If you reach above your head, the umbilical cord will strangle the baby. FACT.

Shellywelly1973 · 03/10/2013 09:57

Are you serious Toby?!?!

I've pulled ceilings down whilst heavily pregnant with one of my dc.

I always decorate whilst pregnant... ceilings included!

TobyLerone · 03/10/2013 10:10

Ask any old lady.

ChocChaffinch · 03/10/2013 10:12

I don't like any of the nhs banned stuff anyway, when not pregnant I eat scrambled eggs that are v well cooked; never oysters prawns etc, only like hard cheese, don't drink much and don't smoke.
I have had max dose paracetamols over 2 days after doing my back in, and am on 12mg ondansatron for hyperemesis, and now am able to drink 2 mugs normal tea a day, really enjoying it again.
am 14 weeks.
admiring those of you still going to the gym.. walking far gives me bump ache or stitch, couldn't imagine doing a proper work out.
Miss riding but haven't done it for 7 years since dd, honestly though if I still did I would choose not to, even a trustworthy horse can behave weirdly Grin

Julietee · 03/10/2013 10:23

Toby :D
Also - sweeping! And, in India, washing your hair. All quite deadly, don'tcha know!

TwoTearsInABucket · 03/10/2013 11:14

i gave up everything you are meant to give up with DC1. With DC2, er, not so much. This one, I'm eating everything apart from liver, including liver pate due to the vitamin A. Not that i ate much of it before.

I have runny eggs, as long as all the white is cooked, but that's because snotty eggs are disgusting.
I have been eating shedloads of peanut butter even though I didn't touch it with DC1, although I think that has been taken off the no list.
I've had medium rare steak, but I declined a slightly pink burger in a luxury burger place.
And I have the odd diet coke and coffee. Plus normal amount of tea.

But, I don't drink alcohol at all. And since having had kids i don't drink it much anyway. Hangovers and children just don't mix! Plus I'd rather spend calories on cake than wine.

JRmumma · 03/10/2013 11:20

Eat your runny eggs, you have a much higher chance of being run over or catching something on the bus than getting salmonella from a lion stamped egg.

I kept on going gym till 35 weeks and gave birth at 37. I wouldn't horse ride though as you simply cannot predict a horse, no matter how well trained and docile.

Bohemond · 03/10/2013 11:50

I have had to stop taking the drugs I have taken for the last 20 years for rheumatoid arthritis. I suspected I might be a bit wonky but it has all been fine - yay. Although reading the NHS guidelines suggests that I should also give up my full on joint care supplement as it contains fish oil (not fish liver oil) which gives Omega 3. There is nothing on the packet about Vit A in there - any thoughts ladies?
After reading this thread am wondering if I should give up my 1 coffee a day. I am still early days - 6+3.

AmandaPandtheNightmareMonsters · 03/10/2013 12:05

Bohemond - No need at all to give up one coffee a day. The research is about people who drink very large quantities. And even then it is far from conclusive.

This article is quite old now, but gets across a lot of what I'm complaining about about unscientific advice. It covers coffee specifically too.

WinteronPluto · 03/10/2013 12:06

After reading this thread I dreamt about drinking alcohol last night! And I haven't even been feeling like it...

AmandaPandtheNightmareMonsters · 03/10/2013 12:06

Sorry to hear about your meds too. A friend had this issue and was ok through pregnancy (something to do with hormones, or relaxin?!) but had to go back on sharpish afterwards.

Don't know how reliable it is but found this article on fish oils.

BummyMummy77 · 03/10/2013 12:43

I can drink when breast feeding? Woohoo!

Showed dh the comment someone made about telling him to 'fuck right off' if he made remarks or faces and he's promised to never 'suggest' I not do anything again. :D Result.

His mother who went batshit when she saw me having a glass of wine at a party. I told her if she got me too stressed I have to start back on the smack as well. Shut her up very quickly lol!

Brilliant!

In the US it's a BIG no no. That'll be another bunch of mutters and stares I have to deal with. I had a glass of wine in a pizza place the other day and this lady came up to our table to tell my I was irresponsible and did I know about fetal alcohol syndrome.

I was so shocked I just sat there. Dh went off on one with statistics and told her she was ignorant thankfully because the next thing that would have come out of my mouth would have been tears or something very unladylike.

ChocChaffinch · 03/10/2013 13:06

good grief the cheeky old bat!

everything in moderation.

My mum tells a family legend where she drank so much red wine her breast milk turned pink and she cried. Grin

Shock the bloody cheek

Bohemond · 03/10/2013 13:29

Amanda, the fish oil article is very helpful - thank you. The joint supplement seems to contain only fish oil rather than fish live oil so should be fine (and the omega 3s are beneficial).
Think I will stick with the one coffee a day too - relief all round.
The RA thing is a weird one. Have been on the meds for as long as I can remember. Fortunately, while the RA was bad in my yoof, it has improved dramatically with time and I had heard that pregnancy might cancel it out somewhat. Will be interesting to see what happens afterwards - maybe I could have come off the drugs years ago!

Bohemond · 03/10/2013 13:32

The Zoe Williams article linked to by Amanda at 12.05 is a very good read

Writerwannabe83 · 03/10/2013 14:16

So I'm allowed to have soft boiled egg and soldiers??

God how I have missed them!!

This thread is brilliant Smile

BummyMummy77 · 03/10/2013 15:20

Chocchaff that's brilliant lol!

Drinking pregnant here makes you the anti Christ I swear. I got annoyed at one party in the summer when I was having the tiniest glass of red wine and got accosted by a gaggle of well wishers telling me they were sure it was illegal to drink while pregnant. I told them that my Mother smoked and drank heavily throughout all 6 of her pregnancies (she actually did smoke a bit naughty Mum but not much drink) and that was the norm for British people and look how wonderful we all turn out. :D

OP posts:
JRmumma · 03/10/2013 16:06

writer make sure they are lion stamped though, as these eggs come from chickens that have been vaccinated against salmonella.

And runny eggs are still on the no list but i was happy with the risk being so ridiculously low

BummyMummy77 · 03/10/2013 16:10

Can we all stop talking about runny eggs please? :(

OP posts:
DS2inthebox · 03/10/2013 16:29

eww am I the only one who cannot stand runny eggs?! If they're not well done then no thanks.. same goes with steak.

I haven't taken any pre-natal vitamins (I vomit them each and every time!)
I still drink tea but limit myself to 1 cup a day
Other than that I watch what I eat and what I do
