Is it worth buying one of those tommy tippee nappy bin thingies?

I have a toddler who'll be 22m by the time baby is born in November so we'll be changing two babies a day which means loads more nappies.

Do these bins stink a room out? Are they worth it?

A normal bin, emptied often, works just fine in my house Wink

Fragglewump · 25/09/2013 21:17

Nope I had one and used it twice! It went to charity complete with several cassettes of the weird twisty bag liners!

Fakebook · 25/09/2013 21:18

We have a small pedal bin upstairs for ds's nappies atm which we empty everyday and I go outside to dispose of pooey nappies during the day. I'm just thinking if it will be more work with two of them to do this.

Why didn't you carry on using it fragglewump?

I have the Angelcare one (unscented, I hate anything scented). Nope, doesn't stink the house out, super easy to use.

Only thing is, it's a bit like a Gillette razor. Quite cheap to buy but refills are expensive.

pudseypie · 25/09/2013 22:05

I gave up too, so expensive. I still use it but without the liners. I just put the dirty nappy into a basic nappy sack and put it into the tommee tippee bin and them empty that into wheelie bin daily.

AmandaPandtheNightmareMonsters · 25/09/2013 22:06

Expensive poo sausages. Yuck. Never had one, but friends ditched theirs smartish.

AmandaPandtheNightmareMonsters · 25/09/2013 22:07

p.s. A lidded nappy bin will seal in smells far better than a pedal bin and easily hold a day's worth of nappies. Just empty in the evening and rinse the bucket out.

MummyJetsetter · 25/09/2013 22:10

Never had one, didn't fancy lingering dirty nappies or the clutter! I just threw them out the window in to the garden and dp would pick them up and put them in outside bin regularly. x

youbethemummylion · 25/09/2013 22:11

No. Pop in a nappy bag then but in outside bin that is handily stored within reach of back door. Or if its just a wee but in kitchen bin.

HandMini · 25/09/2013 22:18

I have the Angelcare one. It's great. We're in a small-ish flat so any kind of stink tends to drift through all the rooms, so for that reason alone I wanted a "sealed" type bin. You can buy a massive roll of the plastic tubing on ebay and then refill your own cassettes, rather than buying new cassettes each time.

BonaDea · 25/09/2013 22:20

Yes yes yes.

Mine didn't ever stink even when full in the very hot summer weather. This is honestly one of my best ever baby purchases

We have one downstairs and one in the nursery. Would not be without!

Charlottehere · 25/09/2013 22:20

Lid with bin?

frankie4 · 25/09/2013 22:23

No I didn't use mine. I used to put wee nappies in a normal bin to be emptied every day, and all poo nappies went straight out the front door into the outside bin.

Mummyoftheyear · 25/09/2013 22:25

No

GirlWithTheDirtyShirt · 25/09/2013 22:25

Yes! We were given one about 9 months ago and it's been a revelation. I wish we'd had it when DD was tiny! Well continue using it as the bathroom bin now DD is out of nappies.

sapfu · 25/09/2013 22:26

Can't stand them. Would rather carry a turd in my hands from the nappy to the loo than have one.

Agree about expensive poo sausages. Imagine 30 nappy sacks, loosely twisted together so that when you empty them out of the bin - oh and one or two will burst from the top unless to shove down an extra 2 feet of the fucking cassette - when you empty them out, some of them will softly and ssquelchily whump! into the nappy below, whilst untwisting furiously like some undead string of shit cocktail sausages.

Save your money.

Sunnysummer · 25/09/2013 22:39

I think it really depends on your circumstances. We live in a small flat with a bit of a trip to the bins and our Munchkin bin was brilliant. It's never smelt, even in hot weather, and we empty ever few days without hassle.

MammySam · 25/09/2013 22:39

Looks like i might be the only one but I loved my tommee tippee nappy bin! Cartridges are expensive but just bought them n bulk when they were on offer. When baby is small you get loads of nappies n there and there is no smell frm them at all, which is great that you're not tripping out to the outside bin every 5 mins, especially when you've got 12 nappies a day to deal with!
I stopped using it so much when my daughter was older (10-12 months) because the nappies are much bigger and you don't get many in and then it becomes expensive with cartridges.
But I vote that they are an invaluable tool for a newborn and small babies nursery!
:D

HandMini what do you type into eBay to buy your own refills?

FlamingGallah · 25/09/2013 23:01

We had 3 children in nappies until very recently and have found them v useful. Have the angelcare one, one upstairs and one downstairs. We do still wrap the nappies in a nappy sac though, and then into the bin, so odours not a problem.

We just bulk buy the cassettes whenever Boots have a 3 for 2 baby event. Very interested in the make your own refill though!

BummyMummy77 · 25/09/2013 23:39

I love them. You need to be on top of it though as people say or you end up with a 30 foot poo snake chasing you down the stairs.

CrispyFB · 26/09/2013 09:10

Most of our "baby gadgets" have fallen by the wayside but our Tommy Tippee nappy bin has lasted through two children so far. It works, basically. When emptying the bin, DH loads the sausage string into a separate bin bag I think to avoid being chased by the sausages down the stairs..

Mumof3xx · 26/09/2013 09:16

I just chuck mine in the outside bin if soiled and indoor bin if wet (bin emptied daily) I have three dc and have always done it this way

Seeline · 26/09/2013 09:23

I loved my Tommee Tippee one - used it for both DCs (who were both in nappies at the same time for a while). So easy to use. The cassettes may ahve been a bit costly, but I bulk bought when on offer (Boots and Babies'r'Us often had them on special, but that was at least 7 years ago now) Grin
