Winter coats?

Now the weather is starting to cool down I have had to accept I will need a new coat. EDD is 16th December so something to wear through November to February (not expecting to be back in my normal clothes for a while!) is going to be a must.

I obviously don't want to spend a lot and size wise I have a broad back and big boobs which are getting bigger by the minute so think I need to look at a size 18.

I've looked around and only seen one coat from Jojomama Bebe where you can add a panel at the front with zips (clever) so the coat can be worn post pregnancy too. Problem is it's a parker and whilst this will be perfect for all those winter walks I'm planning on taking it's a bit too casual for wearing in the evening when going out or even to wear to work (I work in an independent school and they like us to be fairly smart).

I hate having to spend money on clothes I will only wear for a short time as it seems such a waste. Sad

New look have a very nice maternity wrap coat in and it's only £39 at the min iv just bought the gray one it looks lovely on im also an 18 x

terilou87 · 14/09/2013 10:04

Just had another look it's 29.99 on sale now and it's a snood jacket,

YoniMitchell · 14/09/2013 10:04

terilou is the New Look coat warm? I'm due in Jan so need something too, want something warm but I also don't want to spend the usual 'warm coat' amount on something I'll only wear for a short time. Usually I'll use a good winter coat for a couple of years or more so don't mind spending a fair amount.

terilou87 · 14/09/2013 10:07

Yes it's warm im due Jan 10th x

YoniMitchell · 14/09/2013 10:08

Ooh, fab! Just looked online and it's a really nice style! Did you get your normal size?

YoniMitchell · 14/09/2013 10:09

Ps I'm due 2 days after [excited but slightly terrified]

Xenadog · 14/09/2013 10:13

I'd see the NL coat and just wondered if it was going to be warm or not. If it is - I might be in luck! :-) Thanks x

It is exactly what I am after

honey86 · 14/09/2013 10:27

i have trouble finding a good coat. ive just bought a duffle jacket thing from primark for now. had to get a size 18 though to fit around my bump. i was size 10 before i got pregnant x

Alexandra6 · 14/09/2013 10:53

I'm due Nov 28th and trying to work out if it's worth getting a mat coat or saving the money and just wearing layers and my usual coats, either opened or buttoned as far as poss. Hoping for a warm autumn!

terilou87 · 14/09/2013 10:59

I got my normal size it feels a little big on bump but iv still got growing to do in that area fits lovely every where else x

terilou87 · 14/09/2013 11:01

Alexandra I had my little boy last November and I just bought chunky cardigans and scarfs.

Thingymajigs · 14/09/2013 11:02

I'm due in February so decided I need a proper maternity coat instead of layering up. I bought the New Look snood for £40 in burgandy a few weeks ago. Was an 8 pre pregnancy but chose a 10 as i've put on weight. It fits beautifully. The only issue I can see is a lack of pockets and the press studs feel like they might rip off with too much use but I only intend on using it for one winter.

Thurlow · 14/09/2013 11:07

I had two coats during winter when I was pg. One was a thinner, nicer coat that could be warmed up with scarves and another layer. The other was an absolutely mahoosive hooded waterproof/fleece thingy from Matalan that cost about £15. Unattractive but I noticed so many women wearing one for every day. Plus it's perfect for zipping up over a sling or carrier when the baby is here.

Something like this from Regatta, but a size up from your usual.

Romily · 14/09/2013 12:39

I got a smart New Look coat from ebay for only £15, well worth having a look on there.

RedRobin1 · 14/09/2013 15:24

Another one due in Jan but not planning to buy a maternity coat - will wear my chunky cardis as I don't think I will be standing up and walking outdoors much with a bad back in third trimester.

Will save the money to buy a nice coat post birth as a treat Grin

Sleepthief · 14/09/2013 16:09

What about a cape/poncho. There are a few about this year (sainsbury's has a nice smart looking one) and it has the added advantage of accommodating a baby in a sling too Grin. I bought one last year when neither pregnant nor planning to be anytime soon Hmm. It'll be perfect for my expanding DC4 bump due in January. If the weather's anything like last year, going coatless will not be an option!

greentshirt · 14/09/2013 16:37

The snood coat is on the ASOS website too

FatPenguin · 14/09/2013 17:15

I've got the snood coat. Didn't get maternity just the regular version in a 12 (normally a 10) and I think bump will fit in it ok because of the style and I can just leave bottom buttons undone.

SherbertDip · 14/09/2013 17:22

I've just got a coat from Red Herring in Debenhams for £43 - due in Feb

Xenadog · 14/09/2013 18:25

Some brilliant ideas there guys - I had considered a poncho but had no idea who stocked any. I will have a look at Sainsbury's now.

Suddenly I don't feel so bad about it all. Smile

quackojuliet · 14/09/2013 18:56

same here - thanks for the input ladies! I was trying to avoid buying one but since the weather has turned i've had to be more realistic. also due in jan so there's a good few months it'll be used.

PorkPieandPickle · 14/09/2013 20:03

I'm due in December so decided I needed a coat- I bought a second hand mamas and pappas one off eBay for about a tenner. I loves it ??
