Summer baby vs winter baby.....

So DS1 was a summer baby. I have many a fond memory of long walks in the sun with him as a newborn. We had family over for bbqs and all the rest of it..... Fast forward to now and I'm expecting DC2 in December! I am wondering how it will be? Am I more likely to get PND? I hate the cold...... Will new baby have constant snuffles and runny nose etc? Will I be stuck indoors for most of the time? Any experiences to share?

DS1 was born mid December & to be perfectly honest I do wonder how I coped! Yes it was lovely staying in a warm house with my newborn watching the 5am news (in the dark) about all the snowfall but I did go a little stir crazy as I couldn't even go out for a walk as pushing the buggy was so difficult & it only being light for 6 hours.

It was nice having him there, 10 days old for his first Christmas though.

Everyone is different but we purposely didn't start TTC'ing this time around until the end of June. DC2 is due in April 2014, which I'm happy about!

He hardly got any colds /coughs etc, he was wrapped up like a little sausage roll whenever we did get to venture out & he was breastfed for 6 months so that probably helped him too.

Good luck!

I had ds1 in October and expecting ds2 in November.
Winter babies are lovely as you can enjoy those gorgeous clear and crisp winter walks all wrapped up warm, then come home And snuggle up in the warm :-D

My DS didn't get a cold until he was over a year old.

sleepyhead · 10/09/2013 21:13

Ds1 was late November so by the time summer came around he was more alert and ready to be out and about in nice weather than ds2 who was born in April.

Swings and roundabouts. Both times of year have been good Smile

Mummyfizzy · 10/09/2013 21:24

Dd was born in Oct which meant lots of snuggly breastfeeds and cuddles in front of the fire while she was still tiny and not moving and a lovely summer where she was free to crawl around and start exploring the world without having to worry about losing socks and being bundled up in jumpers and coats.

ImFineThankYou · 10/09/2013 21:27

Dd was a spring baby and I was so fat and sweaty (from bf) over the summer it was hideous.

pokesandprodsforthelasttime · 10/09/2013 21:33

DD was born in June and all I remember was being heavily pregnant in the middle of a really hot Spring/ early summer. I used wallow in a bath of cold water to cool down Grin

This baby is due next January, and I'm so glad I don't have to be massively preggers in summer again.

RosesInTheRain · 10/09/2013 22:10

DS was born right at the end of December- one memory from those fuzzy days was New Year's Eve, sitting feeding him as the midnight chimes went and contemplating just how different 2011 was going to be!

A good thing was lengthening days coinciding with me feeling more like going out and doing things. So for the first 6 weeks or so it was dark and cold, but then it was a bit lighter and a bit lighter and then spring :) I did have PND but I believe this was due to a traumatic birth and complete change in life as DC1, not the time of year.

Another positive is that it is easy to keep a baby warm but harder to keep them cool and out of the sun. And weaning... weaning starts in the summer which means it is very easy to clean up, DS used to sit in his highchair in just a nappy then I'd hose him down (BLW!).

RosesInTheRain · 10/09/2013 22:11

ooh, and you can hide post baby weight under lots of winter layers for a few months at least

GreatJoanUmber · 10/09/2013 22:26

I have a late winter baby and a (very) late spring baby; I sort of preferred the winter one! He was born at the end of Feb, so he sort of grew into spring, with everything else growing and blossoming too, it felt "right" somehow. Also agree that it's easier to keep them warm in the cold, than to cool them down in the heat.
My summer baby got a very nasty bout of bronchiolitis, at 6 months old, in December. Whereas my winter baby was fine and only got a cold during his second winter (though I blame that more on starting nursery). So I don't think winter babies are more prone to getting ill.
One thing however I prefer with the summer born: the birthday is far away from Christmas, and you can have parties outdoors! With DS1 I always struggle to come up with present ideas so shortly after Christmas.
For school purposes, winter babies have the upper hand again, seeing as they will be older when they start.
DC3 is due in January, so it's another winter one for me...

Lovecookies · 11/09/2013 10:09

Dd1 was summer baby and I remember being really hot from holding her and bf her all the time, it was uncomfortable. However much easier to be awake when she was up feeding in the night due to less darkness. Second due end nov and I'm looking forward to bf with her being a little hot water bottle Smile

Fairydogmother · 11/09/2013 10:13

Great thread as I've wondering the same thing! First baby due at the start of November Grin

MummyPig24 · 11/09/2013 10:39

I had dc1 at the end of October, it was cold getting up in the middle of the night and I did worry about him being cold. It felt like a long winter!

I had dc2 in march (dc3 is due on her birthday!) it wasn'tong before the sun shined and we had some nice weather, which was good seeing as I had a toddler that needed to run around.

cathpip · 11/09/2013 10:47

Both my dc's were winter babies ( nov and jan). I have photos of them in the snow at around 10 days old with both, I love winter babies we went out walking every day, and no neither of mine got a sniffle/cold till they were over a year old. The shorter days are the only downside, but Xmas with a newborn is wonderful. I'm expecting dc3 in April which will be a bit different for me, that and none of the hand me down clothes will be correct for the seasons ;(!

MrsPatMustard · 11/09/2013 11:02

Due with DC1 in Jan. Am quietly relieved that it's a winter baby - found this summer heat absolutely exhausting so definitely would have struggled if i was in 3rd trimester. Also glad my child won't be the youngest in the year group when it comes to school - several friends have had summer babies who really struggled with reception because they were so young they were just not ready for it.

Toohottohandle · 11/09/2013 14:49

Dd1 was born aug and dd2 jan
Nicer weather for dd1 on her bday
Whereas on dd2s last bday she played in the snow

DuelingFanjo · 11/09/2013 14:53

Luckily the weather is generally quite mild in the UK so winter babies do get to go out. My DS was born just before Christmas and I fondly remember snuggling up with him as a newborn and going to cosy cafes to meet other friends with babies. Also DH was off work. Then when he was 6 months old the weather was great and we could get out and about in parks.

I wouldn't worry too much.

dimdommilpot · 11/09/2013 16:42

Dd was born end of october. It was lovely wrapping us both up n going on walks and spending cosy days snuggled up when it was snowing outside. Fast forward to the summer and she was just getting active and enjoying going to the parks n playing on the swings, having picnics etc. this 1 is due spring (april) so its the opposite. Im not sure i have a preference, maybe ask me in a year n half when ive experienced both.

RosesintheRain- I adore your description of seeing in the new year with DS that's so gorgeous! I am due early December so would love to have similar this new years eve.

RosesInTheRain · 11/09/2013 18:47

:) It's one of my few nice memories from the first few weeks (blocked out most of it- see earlier post!). Candles, fairy lights on the tree and just me, DH and DS (and Jools Holland in the background). Hope you get your version :)

llamallama · 11/09/2013 19:03

My eldest is October and I just had a baby this June. This summer was a nightmare with the newborn! Give me a winter baby anyday!

PetiteMum · 11/09/2013 20:00

Ooh, not sounding so bad now thanks! I particularly like the idea of having DH around ver the Xmas period....

EDD for my DC1 is 12 October and I can only list what I'm looking forward to about having a baby over winter:

  • Snuggles with the baby indoors, in front of the fire
  • Gorgeous snow suits, mittens, hats
  • Crisp, sunny walks
  • Having one Christmas with baby here, but will be too young to appreciate it, so gives us time to really think about the traditions we want to establish for next year!
  • Plenty of friends and family will be around for Christmas/New Year and will hopefully be more than eager to babysit so we can enjoy at least one night of festivities
  • Can spend winter trying to get my body back, whilst wearing gorgeous winter coats, scarves, boots
  • By the time summer comes round again, baby will be more mobile for trips to the beach/park etc.
  • DH being able to take 2 weeks off over Christmas

Oooh this thread has cheered me up on a day I am counting down the days I have left at work. My first is due December 16th (but fully expecting to give birth on Christmas day!) and I did feel a bit of trepidation about the time of year but now I think this is going to be MUCH better than I expected!
