Unexpectedly pregnant at nearly 49...Help!

And I thought I was going through the menopause! Complete shock.
The risks to my health must be considerable and the chance of having a healthy baby lowish I guess. Am about 8 weeks. Anyone else in the same position? Anyone had a successful pregnancy in their very late 40? Would love to hear from you!

Goodness, congratulations! I don't know that you necessarily will have risks to your health, the baby may very, very well be absolutely fine and you can have all the usual checks. It must be a massive shock for you though!

Smile

I can't help with similar experience but am bumping for you because someone here will be able to help! Flowers

FetchezLaVache · 05/09/2013 18:55

Not me, but a lady I used to work with, who was totally career-orientated and never wanted kids, accidentally became pregnant and had twins at 48. They were about 16 when I knew her and absolutely fine!

impatienttobemummy · 05/09/2013 18:56

That is a surprise! Do you already have children? It all depends on how fit you feel she is a number it doesn't define you, I know se shockingly unfit forty year olds and se women in there 60s who are healthier and fitter than me!
Actually sat next to a woman on the tube Wednesday who was pregnant and I'd say late 40's she looked great

impatienttobemummy · 05/09/2013 18:57

bloody spell check! Age not she!

Ledkr · 05/09/2013 19:00

Wow!! Congrats.
I was unexpectedly pg with my fifth child at 43 so quite old!
Was a worrying time for me if I'm honest.
I went to see professor Nickolades at the foetal Medicine clinic at Harley st. He did an early scan and blood tests to reassure me of the risk of birth defects which greatly helped me to relax.
Pregnancy was ok and I now have a lovely but lively two year old girl whom we all adore.
All works out in the end, good luck to you.

womma · 05/09/2013 19:02

Congratulations! There was a lady on 'The Midwives' last week who had a perfectly healthy baby aged 48. You will be fine I'm sure. Very happy for you! (I'm about to have a baby at 44, I'll hold your hand)

williaminajetfighter · 05/09/2013 19:02

I feel for you. Same situation but I'm 44. You do have a higher chance of problems but all is not lost.

Pm me if you feel the need to chat.

coffeewineandchocolate · 05/09/2013 19:02

My gran had my uncle at 47 when my dad was in his second year at uni. She is now 82 and probably fitter than me! It was also her easiest pregnancy!

LaVitaBellissima · 05/09/2013 19:02

Congratulations, what a shock! Do you have other children?

IslaValargeone · 05/09/2013 19:05

Congratulations! My gran had my aunty at 48, healthy pregnancy healthy baby.
Best wishes to you.

123bucklemyshoe · 05/09/2013 19:06

My mum was 43 when she had me in the early 70s. I am a twin & we were both fine & went on to do well....care is much better now. Hope you are ok & wishing you well

ColdfeetGreysocks · 05/09/2013 19:06

(Dr) Luisa Dilner used to write a weekly column for the Guardian after she got pg at 47. Maybe she can help you: www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2009/oct/24/luisa-dillner-pregnant-older-mother

Funnily enough, the column stopped when she had a new baby to look after.

Congratulations! Bumping for you x

Mintyy · 05/09/2013 19:09

Do you want to have a baby? That is the first question you need to ask yourself. My grandma had a neighbour who had twins at 50 (yes really) but this woman did not have the same options in the early 1960s as we do today.

DumSpiroSpero · 05/09/2013 19:09

I know someone who had a healthy baby boy last year at the age of 49 Grin

herecomesthsun · 05/09/2013 19:11

I had my youngest 2 months shy of hitting 48, she was fine. I had gestational diabetes and I've had 2 babies in my 40s and 2 Caesarians, but no long term ill effects to my health. The most likely outcome is a healthy baby and a healthy mum you know!

IslaValargeone · 05/09/2013 19:18

faints at twins at 50

mummylin2495 · 05/09/2013 19:21

My sister had twin girls in feb 2012 and everything was fine, she is coping well. She was 51 !

FraggleRock77 · 05/09/2013 19:22

Congratulations. I also watched the recent episode of midwives where the women was 48. Maybe catch it on iPlayer for inspiration. GrinX

TheSydenhamSet · 05/09/2013 19:29

My friend's lovely dad who's now in his 70s was born when his mother was 50!

TeaAndANatter · 05/09/2013 19:49

No experience of, but wanted to say 'congratulations'. What an absolutely gorgeous surprise I hope, realising might be putting foot in it

I saw the midwives programme too, and also read something recently about pregnancy affects your ageing process (you age slower apparently) as natures way of making sure you last the distance. Cheered me up enormously as a not too gymslip mum myself. Good luck xxx

8684Toronto · 05/09/2013 20:52

Thank you all for encouraging comments. So good to hear of successful pregnancies at my advanced age!

I have two much older children. No idea what they'll think. Most likely will give me a lecture on the wonders of contraception...

Just let this be a lesson to you all. If you're not careful you can come home from the South of France with something as well as a suntan. And I'd just got back down to a size 8 too!

So lots to think about. Still hasn't sunk in but is good to hear that I'm not the only one!

Size 8?! well you deserve a fat belly then.
I have older dc too and my boys absolutely adore their baby sister. They smile as son as they see her, big beaming smiles.
I have a grandchild older than my daughter, they attend nursery together.

EeyoreIsh · 05/09/2013 21:04
