Movement at 17 weeks - worrying now.

I'm managing to stress myself out a bit here, I'm pg with no 3 and have been feeling gentle movements for about 3 or 4 weeks but nothing much in the last week. Strangely, having seen the baby during an ultrasound for something else on Thursday (the lovely sonographer took a detour through my womb!) I am more worried, not less. Although we saw the heart beating and things looked fine, it was not moving - I would expect it to have been, after having been prodded with an ultrasound scanner for the last 20 minutes (it was on my kidneys/bladder). At the 12 weeks scan it was all over the place....

Now I am just really worried about lack of movement. Any advice? We don't have a home Doppler and can't afford one, so that's out of the question (and a trip to hospital would be really hard unless it was urgent, dd is about to start school and dh has the car during the days....). Is it a case of just wait and see?

At 17 weeks I don't think anyone would expect you to have much discernible movement. I'm sure it's moving around loads -- it's just still very small, so you're only going to feel the really big stuff.

It's also miles away from your kidneys, so unlikely to have been affected much by a scan on them. I'm sure it was probably just having a quiet moment while the scanner was near it.

Thanks Toby - I hope so, and am really trying to calm down as I know that won't help....

Have some chocolate, I've just eaten a twirl and am now feeling loads of movement (17wks too)..

TobyLerone · 31/08/2013 21:50

Mine was pretty quiet at the 20 week scan, to the point where I have to have it re-done tomorrow because it wouldn't move so she could look at the heart properly, despite me leaping up and down/running to the loo/touching my toes/lying on my side.

Sometimes they're just lazy :o

MakeGlutenFreeHay · 31/08/2013 21:50

Grin I tried to find some earlier, there was none in the house! Shock. Hot chocolate just doesn't have the same effect.... Dh is out otherwise I'd pack him off to the shops!

Yy sometimes a cold drink/chocolate helps, although at 17 weeks perhaps not so much. Worth a try!

MakeGlutenFreeHay · 31/08/2013 21:52

Thanks Toby - maybe it's not such a bad thing, I think I'm due a quiet, calm child after the whirlwinds that are dd and ds! They were both ridiculously active in the womb, so I guess I'm just used to more wriggling, perhaps. Good luck with your scan tomorrow - always lovely to see them!

I felt no movement with DD2 until about 22 weeks I think after having felt her at 15 weeks. If they were worried at the scan, they would have said. Home dopplers are not recommended. A beating heart does not always mean a healthy heart so they can cause false reassurance. The best way to get checked out is via the professionals. You have done this. Try not to worry too much although I know easier said than done. Little tiny babies sleep a lot so hopefully that is what your baby us doing. Good luck.

Might just grab some water and an early night, see if that helps. Iirc, night time was party time for the other two!

Thank you ThermoLobster - that's really reassuring. I suspect it might feel a long wait until my 20 week scan.

i got a doppler on amazon for £20, its really good. i didnt start feeling anything until 20 weeks and it was on and off
please dont worry x

DaleyBump · 31/08/2013 21:57

Just wanted to say, an Angelsounds Fetal Doppler is £20 on Amazon :)

DaleyBump · 31/08/2013 21:57

Posted too soon! They're really amazing, I would recommend them 100%. Hope you start feeling some movement soon :)

MakeGlutenFreeHay · 31/08/2013 21:59

Interesting.....although even £20 is a bit beyond me right now! I don't know whether it would end up making me more paranoid either, iyswim - if I couldn't catch the heartbeat I would panic even more....(this is not like me at all!)

angelsounds thats the one i got! amazing! and so clear as well!
it sometimes takes me a while you just got persevere .. if i cant find it i walk around and do it again.
i know that bub is always quite low so thats where i usually find her.

please try not to worry, worrying is good and will just make you feel pants., i worried at the begining and i just had to keep telling myself everything is fine, if it wasnt your body will tell you x

MakeGlutenFreeHay · 31/08/2013 22:07

storm I'd hope it would. I still seem to be expanding at a rate of knots and I am having the hollow feelings that I know from pgs past are early Braxton Hicks, and I am still more knackered than I ever thought possible (must go to sleep!) so I reckon these are all positive signs that all is still ok. I will try to stop worrying, there's nothing I could do about anything at this stage anyway, i reckon. Accept what you can't change, change what you can etc.

Thanks all for taking the time to calm me down a bit!

So my consultant had a proper go about dopplers, but his main point ( so not relevant to you yet OP) is that once you feel regular movements, you should never get reassurance from a doppler if the movements suddenly stop. Please be really careful using these devices. If you are worried about movement, go in and be checked. Don't rely on a doppler. Sorry to lecture but have seen the tragic outcome of lack of movement not being checked out properly.

Stom91 · 31/08/2013 22:10

thats what we are all here for! :)
its properly early pregnancy worry, i was the same, once you get to the 20 week scan im sure you will be more at ease.

get some sleep as thats probably making you feel pants too,.
everything is always better after some sleep.

keep smiling x

MakeGlutenFreeHay · 01/09/2013 08:02

ThermoLobster don't worry, I really don't think a Doppler would be a good idea for me right now, it'd make things worse even if I could get one. The problem is that I had been feeling a fair few movements - does that qualify as regular movements or is it too early?

Stom bless my existing children, not a lot of sleep was had. Sadly no baby movements either, although I was obsessively watching for them. how does one relax and let go of this worry?

OP posts:
MakeGlutenFreeHay · 01/09/2013 08:04

And tbf even if I did get checked out now and there was a problem (fingers crossed not, clearly) there's nothing that anyone could do anyway, presumably. Later on yes, but I guess at 17 weeks que sera sera, right?

Bless you OP. My sneaky baby who refused to reassure me that she was ok is currently sitting in her highchair eating a crumpet. Really hope your baby is ok too.
By the way, it didn't appear to be at my 12 week scan, but by my 20 week scan, the placenta was at the front, hence acting as a pillow for all the kicks. I am unclear why I felt movements and then they stopped, and the sonographer couldn't explain but all was well.

No, sleepy. It's still normal not to have felt movement at 19 weeks :)

barebranches · 01/09/2013 08:51

im 17 weeks. i feel nothing!! its probably too small.

MakeGlutenFreeHay · 01/09/2013 09:11

That's the thing though - if I hadn't felt any movements at all yet I wouldn't be in the slightest bit worried! It's the feeling then stopping that's got me.... But yes, I presume that it has wriggled around and is kicking a non-feeling/especially fatty bit of me Grin. Thank you all for reassurance, again. Much appreciated. I think I have a bit of a finger on a grip now, even if I haven't got hold of it fully!
