i know its not the best idea, but i am far too heavy and want to get down to 'overweight' rather than 'obese' before i get big.

i know slimming world is ok to do while pg, but was wondering if anyone hs actually managed to lose much? was thinking of sticking to it all the way through anyway as my blood sugar goes a bit haywire while pg so healthy eating is good idea anyway.

don't know if it's possible but it is worth tryinf SW to ensure a healthy diet,

mojomummy · 15/06/2006 21:17

How much do you weigh & how tall & how much do you eat each day ?

Don't starve yourself, whatever you do Smile

schneebly · 15/06/2006 21:24

I lost 2 stones when I was pregnant (well I stayed the smae weight throughout and came out the other end 2 stones lighter iykwim) but it was all down to loss of appetite! I am a big girl and had been snacking a lot when I fell pregnant but didn't have the inclination to do so when pg - I just ate three meals a day and that is what happened (twice!) I realise this doesn't happen to most people and I go to SW at present - I would encourage you to go down that route as it is a great diet and very healthy. Good luck. Smile

I was 16 stone when I had my ds 3 years ago. During that pregnancy I lost two stone. Now I am 31 weeks pregnant with second and 16 stone again. I have already lost 1 stone just by eating normally. I find that I don't eat for two - sometimes I don't actually feel hungry and have to make myself get something. Running around after ds also helps. I'm not on a diet or trying to lose weight - it just happens. Some women eat for britain when they get pregnant, others don't.

Dior · 15/06/2006 21:29

I would agree. I would never advise anyone to actively lose weight whilst pg, but you can start by eating three sensible meals a day. If you feel hungry, try to snack on fruit and nutritious foods. As a WW Leader, I was allowed to weigh and advise members up to their 12th week of pregnancy. After that, they were allowed to come and take part in the meeting, but not get weighed.

I think it is very wise of you to want to be a sensible weight to carry a child. You don't say how overweight you are, but it will obviously put your body under less stress if you are not overweight.

Have you discussed this with your gp? They would be able to give you an idea of what is safe...

I've got these two books, now I just need to get pg! Smile

howdidthathappen · 15/06/2006 21:34

bmi currently 32.54 - if i even lost a stone and a half i would be down to 29.43 which still isnt great but i would be happier.

i eat for england when pg, have gained weight every time. havent lost since last one which is the problem!

am def not going to starve, thats why i was thinking of sw, but for the first few months when i can get away with eating less i wondered if ww might be a better choice (not keen on it long term for several reasons)

didnt even occur to me to ask gp, that might be sensible!

thanks ladies :)

I think that, if you eat for England whilst pg, you need to think about foods that will keep you satisfied for longer...lean meats, starches, vegetables, fruit. However, I am a firm believer in eating what your body (i.e. not stomach!) tells you that it needs. When I was pg with ds, I occasionally got a craving for tuna! Nothing else, just the odd tuna sandwich!

Enjoy the pregnancy and make sure that you are giving your baby the best foods for its development, as well as the odd treat for you!

howdidthathappen · 15/06/2006 21:58

thats why i was thinking sw, dior. ww hs too much freedom, i spend all my points on chocolate and end up starving for the rest of the day! i suppose if i get off my lazy bum and cook more often it will help too, but i really hate it - thats more dps department

will def be enjoying myself! its all the little things i love, like feeling justified in spending all weekend in your pjs Grin have just realised i am now off cat litter duty and am very chuffed. dp didnt see that one coming!

lol @ cat litter!

hiya, Im 5-6 wks pg and have just lost most of baby weight from previous pregnancies (I lost 2.5 stone on SW). I am interested in following SW for the next 8 months because I really really dont want to pile it all back on (I put on 4.5 stone with ds and didnt lose it all before having dd). My weight gain led to really high blood pressure, testing for gestational diabetes etc, I dont want all those complications this time around so need to do my best to stay a healthy weight - easier said than done when I eat for England when pg. How does SW work then? (when pg I mean)

UglySister · 16/06/2006 12:47

howdidthathappen, I find eating a bowl of porridge for breakfast cuts down hunger for the whole of the day. If you´re tempted by something you shouldn´t have, have another bowl FIRST. This will have the weight falling off, if you eat sensibly! Good luck!

robin3 · 16/06/2006 12:53

Try the GI Diet...thread on mnet and lots of great books in the shops. It's the healthiest diet IMO and you won't get hungry or end up obsessing about what you eat all the time. Puff's the expert and she's lost stones. It certainly will not harm your baby. Loosing weight will also help you before, during and after the birth.

BethAndHerBrood · 16/06/2006 14:03

I'm 34 weeks pg, and have been going to S.W. all through pregnancy (was going already), and I've just put on a stone so far. I haven't followed the plan 100%, not even 50% some days, but have obviously done enough to keep the weight gain down. My consultant told me you should put on 0.5lb a week for the first 20 weeks, then a pound a week for the last 20, but I haven't done anything near that! I am hoping to be considerably lighter when the baby is born than I was when I concieved! And my baby is a good size, and I am as big as a house!!

spacecadet · 16/06/2006 14:08

i did slimming world when preg with ds2 and lost a stone in the first 3 months, then only gained a staone aftyerwards, so i was quite pleased that i didnt end up any heavier, straight after he was born, i was half a stone lighter thatn my pre preg weight.

crunchie · 16/06/2006 14:12

If you follow SW you can do it the same as everyone else, they have now increased Heathly Extras for everyone to 2 x A (milk/Cheese) and 2 x B (fibre etc) You could probably go along with this and a few more syns. TBH SW is a healthy way to eat whenever, as you are concentraing on better foods that fill you up most. I would do this and not worry about weight

sandradee · 16/06/2006 14:13

I lost quite a lot of weight when I was pregnant mainly because I stopped drinking.

Do you normally drink quite a lot? Sorry for the presonal question but half a stone came off me in the first three months just because I stopped getting lashed every night.

I tried to eat healthily as well and resisted pigging out so I lost quite a bit.

shhhh · 16/06/2006 20:03

DON'T DO IT.. My dd is 1 and I am 7 weeks pregnant but wanted to loose a stone of baby weight before I got pregnant again...didn't happen. I spoke to my gp last week about the fact that I don't want to put on even more and end up 2 stone over my desired weight. My gp told me NOT to diet and to eat healthy. To cut out fat and sugar and thats all.
SW sounds good (I only found this out a week ago) as I don't think their aim is to loose weight BUT to have a more healthy and varied diet..this may help you to loose weight BUT I honestly wouldn't go out to loose it iykwim.

You are pregnant and you are at a time in your babies life when they need you most..you are making them and they depend on you to ensure they develop correctly. Cutting out things "baby needs" may not be wise.
I'm in no way a health advisor etc but I personally wouldn't put myself or baby at risk. Speak to your gp and to sw and go from there...don;t forget once baby is here you have all the time to loose the weight then.. good luck. xx

howdidthathappen · 16/06/2006 20:45

gi sounds good, will have a look round for a book. only problem i have with sw is lack of easy food like bread, as i know when i get bigger i will have many occasions where my blood sugar crashes and i have to eat immediately. i dont want to resort to carrying packets of biscuits in my bag again like last time

shhh.. thanks for your advice, im really not going to go mad on dieting but i am concerned that when i get big i will be practically housebound! i struggled a bit last time, but i now have 3 other children to look after (including a very lively 2yo) and i want to be healthy enough to cope. if it was only a stone i wouldnt be concerned at all, i have never tried to lose weight before when pg but this time i am 3.5 stone overweight (5 stone over pre baby weight) so it is quite a big deal! tbh my diet is appalling, so if i do sw and stick to it (or probably any other healthy eating plan i imagine) i will actually be doing more good for my baby as i will be getting more vitamins.

i am 9 weeks pg and weigh 15 stone not at all healthy i have lost 3and half stone since may this year and now eat sensibly and healthy i do have the odd bad day but i dont want to put loads on this time round i have just seen my gp this week about this subject and she says do not eat fat or sugar as your body will naturally hold fat stores whilst pg so dont give it any extra to store there is no reason while you cant lose weight or at least keep it stable when pg but i will make sure my baby gets the right nutrients and healthy foods it needs also to keep my energy levels up (hopefully) and we will see how it goes good luck to everyone trying this healthy eating kick right now

whomovedmychocolate · 11/12/2007 19:54

I can completely understand why you want to lose weight. The increased risk of complications at delivery if you are obese, the assumption that it's harder to lose weight after you've had a baby etc.

However, I have to say:

(1) I was always pretty overweight before I had DD and for eight months afterwards, I gained four stone during pregnancy and it took me a long time to lose it afterwards.
(2) There was no sodding way I could have gone on a diet while pregnant once the sickness kicked it, I just ate and ate, it made me feel better.
(3) If you breastfeed and you exercise appropriately after the baby is born you can actually lose a hell of a lot of weight. There is a book called Body after baby which I used (and I had a flat stomach - nah nah nah nah nah five weeks post partum - I'm pregnant again and it's gone but I know it'll come back).
(4) Your baby needs you to eat. Not eat like there is no tomorrow, but you do need to get enough calories. In the first trimester you are growing an umbilical cord and placenta to keep your baby alive for the next half year or so - believe me you don't want to scrimp growing this body organ! Similarly in the last trimester, having sufficient nutrition will help prevent premature labour, the placenta degrades if you don't take in enough food or go on a faddy diet (I'm not saying you will).

Here's what I'd do. Find out what your normal calorific intake should be - and eat it - I'm guessing about 1500 calories a day. Don't eat crap, just eat that and drink lots of water. You will probably lose some weight anyway because in order to maintain a higher than average weight, you must be eating a higher than average calorific intake anyway.

Oh and congratulations!

Sarahjct · 11/12/2007 22:02

Thanks Chocolate. Speaking as someone who is overweight and 36 weeks, that kind of sweeping statement is really not helpful particularly when you're mostly talking to women who are already pregnant and worried about how their delivery will go.

whomovedmychocolate · 12/12/2007 20:26

Sarahjct - I'm also pregnant so yes I know about worries about delivery thank you.

It's not a sweeping statement but an expression of what I worried about last time and directed at the OP, not actually at everyone
