Please explain nappies for newborns to me...

First baby due in next few months, and am planning on stocking up whenever I see sales.
However, have heard different things about not all nappies suiting all babies, and I don't want to stock up on the wrong thing!
So, am aware that size will depend on size of baby (obviously) but do babies really seem to have a preference for one brand over another? And which is the best one/one that most suited you?
Anything else I should stock up on at same time?

Thank you :)

I would like to know about this too! Although I have heard Aldi nappies are good if anyone can comment on them! X

mrspaddy · 15/08/2013 20:28

I am due in a few weeks - I stocked up on Pampers New Born for the first while (also got Boots own newborn).

Hoping to move over to Aldi at some stage but thought safer to stick with those brands for now.

I have over 100 as they say it is up to seven changes initially.

SaucyJack · 15/08/2013 20:30

For newborns I always used Pampers. No others brands were as soft or small enough for really really really tiny bottoms.

Once they get to the rolling about in their own excrement stage, nappies were all much of a muchness tbh.

RubyGoat · 15/08/2013 20:31

Not sure about babies 'preferring' different brands, but we used Pampers when DD was tiny. They seemed to have a different lining which, not to be too gross, kept the poo away from her skin better. When they are very young, especially if you breast feed, the poo is very, erm, runny. (sorry). But now she is older we just use Morrisons as they are cheap & IMHO compare very well to the branded ones in terms of quality.

Newborn nappies fit 4-11lbs so you could get a pack of nappies from Tesco, Asda and Aldi, and some of Pampers, then when your baby arrives you can try some of each - you might find some nappies better than others. Your baby probably won't express a preference :)

When I was pregnant I bought nappies from Tesco, Asda, Pampers and Sainsburys. Tesco, three months on, are a firm favourite. Pampers smell like a chemical plant. Asda's side sticky tabs required superhuman strength to undo - we each ripped a couple of nappies trying to unstick the tabs. Sainsburys were fine but our area isn't posh enough for a Sainsburys so I haven't been able to buy anymore, and the last time I drove there I reversed into another car in the car park (32 weeks preg) so I am never ever going there again under my own steam, not even for nappies.

Try 'em and pick your favourite. If you can have a favourite type of nappy, that is!

2Labradors · 15/08/2013 20:33

I think it was more my preference than either of my babies. I tried pampers, Huggies, asda's own, morrison's own & tesco's own. With my DD (10 years ago) I loved asda's own but they changed them by the time I had DS, so we used pampers mainly. They're probably all different again now I'm expecting my 3rd so I will probably start with pampers or Huggies when baby is tiny but give them all a whirl again Smile

lagoonhaze · 15/08/2013 20:33

Honestly tescos own or aldi/lidl are just as good if not better than pampers !

cravingcake · 15/08/2013 20:34

It will take a bit of trial and error and what suits to begin with may change within a few weeks and then change again.

I started out with Huggies Newborn with my DS as I liked the picture on the packet it came in (well I had to start somewhere). We later moved over to Pampers Babydry for night time. It really is down to what you prefer and what doesn't leak. Supermarket own brands are quite good as well.

I would say don't stock up too much as the shops are still open and nappies are often on offer and in the early days they do go through them quickly but they also grow quickly so if you aren't sure which ones to go for just get a couple of packs of each and see what you like and in the time between now and then just put money aside in a jar to use later.

AnythingNotEverything · 15/08/2013 20:36

I think Higgins have been discontinued. They were my brand of choice with DS, particularly as they often came with a useful toy box!

I've bought a few packs of Pampers Newborn for my October baby - the price per nappy is a lot cheaper than the next size up.

I had an email today from Asda about their baby event - might be some good deals on nappies there.

RubyGoat · 15/08/2013 20:37

Just saw MrsPaddys post. Maybe our DD was just a champion at bad timing but we got through up to 14 a day for the first couple of months. Shock She was spectacularly good at timing her poo to come out just after we'd put the clean nappy under her bum. We used to joke about it, how many nappies did you use this time dear...

WheresMeJumperOhNo · 15/08/2013 20:37

I wouldn't bother stocking up. You will end up with left over nappies a size too small for your baby (believe me, I'm expecting DC3!) You will still be able to shop once baby has arrived, although I know it's hard to visualise anything beyond the birth right now! Brands like Pampers are always, always, always on special offer in at least one supermarket.

I really liked Kiddicare's Just4Bums range last time, next day delivery and a months supply of nappies in one box. Each box has four packets of nappies - should your baby have a growth spurt you can return any unopened inner packets and get the next size.

Aldi nappies are very good, as are Lidl.

Best of luck!

thekatsatonthematt · 15/08/2013 20:45

Pampers give my ds (19mo) nappy rash, we've settled on asdas own but agree that aldi/lidl/most of the own brands are def worth trying.

For dd (9days) I'm using size 1 huggies as they are a good fit for skinny legs and can be sourced in places like home bargains (£2.49 for a pack of 27 - I bought some today!)

Mintyy · 15/08/2013 20:49

I would advise not to stock up. It is true that babies react differently to different nappies. You will find a brand that you get on with better.

You only need one or two packs of nappies to start off with ... just wait, soon walk to the shops to buy a new pack of nappies will be the absolute highlight of your day Grin.

Misty9 · 15/08/2013 21:01

Can I champion cloth nappies Grin

But now we're using sposies for ds (23mo, since 12mo) I find the Aldi ones great and the sainsburys little ecos and little ones are good. Tbh newborns only have a nappy on for an hour or so before filling it!

PicnicPie · 15/08/2013 21:06

Pampers in early days for DD. Now she is 7 months and I have to say I really like Kiddicare's just4bums nappies.

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 15/08/2013 21:08

I use Aldi nappies- half the price and better than pampers IMO. I would get a few packs in, but getting out to buy nappies caused excitement at the prospect of leaving the house for me Wink

StuckOnARollercoaster · 15/08/2013 21:25

they all have slight differences in size, the tabs, shape even smell so you can see if any have a strong impact for you - if not then just go cheapest!

oh and I didn't realise until a baby group that the ones that have a yellow stripe on them - the stripe goes blue when they're wet! but more obviously they all swell up and go more 'solid' if they are full of wee (and you can usually tell if there's poo by the terrible smell!!!)

dizzy77 · 15/08/2013 21:38

Agree with pp re stocking up - unless you're somewhere very remote or snow is forecast you're always within a few hours of some nappies.

I used pampers for ages with ds1 after some disappointing forays into own brands early on but tried again in the past few months (he's now 2) and was pleasantly surprised w some (sainsbos a bit rubbish, swelled up enormously) but others ok. He's now in Aldi nappies most of the time.

Ds2 is 10wo and we've been mixing it up since birth. Got some pampers (on offer) first off but then used Aldi newborn and also tried tesco which were pretty good and much, much cheaper than the big brands.

If you do want to get a few packs in, I'd suggest getting size 2 - it will likely be a v short time before the baby grows into them: mine was 6lbs 13oz and out of 1s before I'd used my 2 packs of special offer pampers. You know you need to move o the next size when you have two pooplosions in quick succession and/or the baby is the smallest weight marked on the pack.

MummyJetsetter · 15/08/2013 21:47

Pampers are softer, huggies were a little stiff so more chance of gaps for leaks around the legs. You won't need many of each size though, even when the tiny ones still fit their little bum nicely, the wee's and poo's get bigger so the smaller size won't absorb enough causing leaks so big and a bit baggy is the way unfortunately! x

bronya · 16/08/2013 08:36

My DS reacted really badly to the chemicals in Pampers newborns - horrible, like burns almost. Huggies aren't great for boys - nappy stays dry, clothes get wet. Asda/Tesco/Lidl own brands worked well for us. Baby stayed dry, clothes stayed dry, nappy lasted all night when older, contained poo explosions during the day etc.

FobblyWoof · 16/08/2013 09:01

Babies don't have a preference Smile but you can find sone irritate baby's skin more than others when wet. We swore by tesco's newborn nappies but now that DD is older (18 months) we find the tescos ones a bad fit.

oscarwilde · 16/08/2013 10:06

Take a look in the supermarket - the sizes all overlap tons so your baby will be in a size 4 by about 4-5 months if not sooner.
One or two bags of size 1, 2-3 of size 2 and probably 3 thereafter from about 6 weeks old if memory serves.

adagio · 16/08/2013 10:22

I got one of loads of different ones for my LO. Huggies seemed to come up small, as did Sainsbo. Asda seems to favour short fat babies both in nappies and babygro's. You really need to try them on the actual baby to see what fits and works. I got one pack of size 2 to have int he drawer in case I had a big baby (I didn't).

My LO turned up at 6Lb12 dropped to 6Lb1 then has stayed on a line in the book since - and at 8m is still in size 3. Smaller sizes are cheaper, so I am not budging her to the next size until she is really at the threshold!

My point purely being that different babies grow at different rates so you can't assume your LO will be up to the next size fast - although they might be!

ButteryJam · 16/08/2013 15:14

I've used pampers and I like that the colour changes when baby has dirtied it

CruCru · 16/08/2013 16:40

Huggies aren't sold in the UK any more.
