A terrible mistake about what? I've not clicked on the link but if its about taking blah blah vitamin, just forget it. They're scare stories, nothing more, nothing less- as you'll see when you have your baby

LizaTarbucksAuntie · 04/08/2013 15:49

What mistake have you made?

Dackyduddles · 04/08/2013 15:49

No idea what you mean? Did you forget to take folic acid? Wouldn't worry. Babies were born for thousands of years before that became a 'must do'

PrincessKitKat · 04/08/2013 15:50

Oh FFS - bloody phone.
Sorry, the gist of the thread is I've eaten pâté every day prior to finding out I was pregnant this week. It was part of a metabolic typing diet I've been following for ages.
I've now read how harmful liver can be particularly in the first 'days and weeks of pregnancy' according to Daily Fail article above.
I feel irresponsible, guilty and frightened.
Can anyone offer any reassurance? Please?

..and it's from 2005 so probably been there and back about 50 times by now...

Thumbwitch · 04/08/2013 15:51

Have you been taking an ordinary multi vit or one for pregnancy? Because the ones for pregnancy have no cause for concern.

Even if you've been taking one that does contain vitamin A, it does not mean that you have necessarily done any damage to your baby.

Take heart.

Imnotaslimjim · 04/08/2013 15:52

Please, forget you've read it!!

Even eating it every day, you most likely haven't gone over the recommended dose of Vit A, and baby will be absolutely fine

read this it explains how it works and should reassure you

TeddyPickleStick · 04/08/2013 15:52

First baby?!

Look, it's a nothing. Seriously. You could continue eating your pâté washed down with a glass off red and a side order of blue mould cheese for the next god knows how long ... NOTHING WILL HAPPEN

Trust us on this one : )

Fourkisses · 04/08/2013 15:53

I've not read the article, but if its about the liver in pâté you can stop panicking immediately Smile In the 60's & 70's apparently pg women were advised to eat liver for the iron.

LizaTarbucksAuntie · 04/08/2013 15:53

Oh love, don't panic too much, how many weeks are you? and congratulations by the way.

I well remember the panics I did about everything in the first hormone fuelled trimester.... Blush

Trills · 04/08/2013 15:54

If you've only just found out that you are pregnant then it's likely that implantation (about 10-14 days after conception) had not even happened, so the baby was not connected to your blood supply, so nothing that you ate or drank would have affected it.

Thumbwitch · 04/08/2013 15:55

Crossposted with you enormously the first time.

Read this - assuming you haven't been mainlining paté and nothing else, you should be ok. :)

LizaTarbucksAuntie · 04/08/2013 15:55

That's where I was headed Trills...

MrsMangoBiscuit · 04/08/2013 15:56

I had my birthday party when I was pregnant with DD1, drank best part of two bottles of wine (regretted it the next day!) Found out a few days later that I was pregnant. Thought DD might have come out with hiccups, but nope, she's fine. I'm sure that your pâté hasn't had the slightest effect on your baby, except perhaps keeping it's mum happy.

Madratlady · 04/08/2013 15:57

Have you been eating one helping a day or a whole tub a day? I'm sure eating a portion of pate for a week or so won't do any harm. Lots of people do things that aren't advised in pregnancy before they find out and go on to have perfectly healthy babies. Try not to panic.

PrincessKitKat · 04/08/2013 15:57

Thank you for all the quick replies, and the reassurance.

Yes, first baby. Terrified. Hormone fuelled. Just been given a baby book full if horror stories (shut it in the pouffe). Used to being in charge & capable. 'mature mum' bringing its own set of concerns... Its a recipe for paranoia.

I can't do much anyway now but can read your replies & laugh at myself for being a bit of a tit over pâté.

Dackyduddles · 04/08/2013 15:58

Honestly it will be fine. I had same panic over Parma ham and stuff. It will be ok.

PrincessKitKat · 04/08/2013 16:03

Mainlining might be taking it a bit far, Smile but I was getting through 2 packs a week very happily. A lot.
I was ok thinking the baby is fairly self contained for the first few weeks, then that article announced that it was 'first days and weeks'.
Scary.

MeerkatMerkin · 04/08/2013 16:03

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Don't worry about the pâté, your baby will not suffer any ill-effects from it - if you still fancy eating it you can continue eating meat pâté or try a vegetarian alternative, I'm quite keen on mushroom pâté.

LizaTarbucksAuntie · 04/08/2013 16:03

You're not a tit, honestly. The first few weeks are most definitely the 'worst' as you have so many hormones whizzing about and you're bone tired from your body work so hard to grow the baby and of course you're adjusting to the fact that 'HolymotherofgodI'mhavingababyanactualbabythere'sababygrowinginme'......

A friend of mine when first pg used to ring me up about 3 times a week and patiently explain to me what dreadful things she'd done in the last 48 hours that she thought would be dreadfully damaging. Her pfb is a strapping 6ft rugby player now :) I often remind her of it.

I myself however, was a model of serenity throughout not only pregnancy but also the birth and the last 7 years of SmallLovely's life :)

Welcome to the big adventure

roofio87 · 04/08/2013 16:04

My mum ate liver twice a week during all 3 of her pregnancies because the doctors said it was important for iron!! We all turned out perfectly!!

PrincessKitKat · 04/08/2013 16:08

Thanks everyone.

I'm now going to have a hormonal weep at you all being kind enough to answer & reassure me...

IAmTheTwelfthDoctor · 04/08/2013 16:12

2 packs a week really isn't that much (unless it was a giant catering-sized pack).

Pregnant women used to be told to eat extra liver -- now, granted, that wasn't great advice, but the vast majority of them sailed through pregnancy with no problems. You don't even share a blood supply with your baby until the fifth week of pregnancy (third week after conception) anyway. DO NOT USE THE DAILY MAIL FOR MEDICAL ADVICE.

Munchmallow · 04/08/2013 16:12

I had my first baby in the 70s and yes, I was told to eat lots of liver- luckily I quite like it.

We were only told not to smoke and drink, there were no forbidden foods then and babies turned out fine. Please don't worry.

goodasitgets · 04/08/2013 16:19

Obviously I would not advise this diet but a work colleague was quite a party girl. So she drank regularly, smoked and ate mainly junk food (and took drugs)
She went to the doctors with back pain to be told it was the baby sitting funny and a trapped nerve. Her reply of "what baby?!" shocked the doctor a little... She gave birth 6 days later (was full term and no idea) Shock
Gorgeous baby boy. Her boyfriend proposed, she quit all the bad stuff l, they are now married and expecting their second baby Smile
